A good way to get your fails off is to wait until nightfall and try to steal from a merchant, ie one of the NPC merchants wandering the bazaar.
Merchants have very high resistance to steal, so you'll almost always fail. At night time, if there isn't a guard in the room with you, or the rooms immediately adjacent to you, you won't get crim flagged. Night occurs once every 1.5 hours, so go in, get your fail, go home, jerk off, and that's all you got to do.

These seems like a good place to ask, since it's so important to the class: Is there any surefire way to make sure you're hidden?

Try to walk past a doorguard. Some of them are scripted to stop you no matter what, and it's usually easy to tell which these are, but the standard doorguard script that is used in most places will allow you to sneak past if you're hidden. As such, you'll get 'the door is closed' instead of 'soandso steps in front of you with a frown' or whatever the default is.

No because you have to be hidden in order to sneak past a doorguard, so it'll let you know whether or not you're hidden.

How would pickpockets even use sap effectively if they don't have the bludgeoning skill?

How would pickpockets even use sap effectively if they don't have the bludgeoning skill? They do now. Slashing was replaced by bludgeoning relatively recently-- many lists posted here have yet to be updated.

They do have bludgeoning skill. They used to not have it, but that was a long time ago.

What does it go up to? 30? 40? Can a pickpocket reasonably sap someone into unconsciousness, once maxed? If he couldn't, how would a pickpocket be able to follow up for the knock-out?

I've had a drovian/thug mage with EG strength who sapped people into unconsciousness in one hit. I didnt even have bludgeoning skill. Granted, my off/def was pretty high. Sap has a pretty stupid damage range though. An assassin with maxed out sap of 80, exceptional strength, offense in his 80s, and etwo in mid to high journeyman (I'm thinking somewhere around 50), and sapped for 40-50 stun. Even though the same character with a sap of apprentice, sapped people for 80-KO stun on a regular basis to a point of me having difficulties failing.
In other words. A pickpocket 'could' potentially KO. But it's not going to be a 100%. It's not a 100% for a dwarf assassin either. A very broad range on sap.

I'd imagine the target's helmet comes into play here as well. Also: What weapon were you using to sap with, if I may ask? I'd imagine weapons designed for sapping specifically (like... saps) would be more effective than a warhammer (for some reason).

With the code change that just came out, pickpockets are now god-tier.

Does pickpocket or thug have a higher sap cap? Burglars being able to get anywhere they want to always seems huge to me but everyone on this board seems to hate them vs the pickpocket.
