Once I was able to clandestinely obtain access to the Templar's Quarter. Upon which I was able to successfully steal the HG jailor's key. An Interesting side-effects of doing so was that if you are not wanted (and not a templar ... or the like) and you unlock a jail cell and enter it, the code immediately sends you out of the templar's quarter. I myself am aware there has been mis-use of this "teleportation". AFAIK this is the reason why the key is now worn around the neck the jailor. Said key also unlocks the room within the jail where all the equipment stripped by the guards is thrown. There can be interesting stuff in there at times. that room will more often than not be empty. Templars have a command that lets them sell off everything in there at once and pocket the money, although at a lower rate than they would get if they actually sold each piece individually.

Any more anecdotes about pickpockets? I'm personally considering one but I'm really unsure what the difference between them and burglars are. Anyone care to enlighten me?

How -good- is max steal? Are you still restricted to open containers and very light objects?

With max steal, you can swipe most one-handed weapons sheathed on a belt, and basically anything in a cloak, belt, or backpack.

Yep. You can also steal anything in the inventory. The inventory is the easiest to steal from. Sheathed weapons and inside a backpack tends to be harder.

If the container is closed, does sleight of hand allow for stealthy opening and closing? What exactly goes into detection? Skill versus wisdom?
As much as stealing things sounds great, planting things makes me cackle mischievously.

Which is why you see most people open <container>/get <object> <container>/close <container> in the span of a couple of seconds.

Which is why you see most people open <container>/get <object> <container>/close <container> in the span of a couple of seconds. That makes sense. I do that when getting things out of backpack etc and I could see how difficult it would be to take something from such a bag if I was wearing it. However, most people take off their bags when sitting down for a bit. This still makes me think that planting something should be able to happen. Most of these containers aren't lidded or have zippers so lifting a lip of a bag to drop a bit of spice, a murdered rival's ring, or a note, should be possible in my opinion and would create so many interesting interactions!

Pickpocket has gotta be the most gimp class in the game, but goddamn having max steal is the greatest thing ever. There's a few nice things about the pickpocket class. For one thing, it's incredibly easy to max, allowing you to have a completely maxed-out specialist class in as little as 5-6 days played. Notable perks for pickpockets: - Highest agility boost of any guild. Prioritize it first and you'll get AI agi about 90% of the time. - Branches parry very easily, making it the only class besides warrior that can have the skill without the absolutely ridiculous amount of time and training it takes for rangers and assassins. It even caps pretty high at 45. - The combat skill caps are right around the point where a warrior plateaus anyway. Warriors tend to hit a point at around ~40ish in weapons and dual-wield where any further progress is severely slowed down because only the most agile things can dodge your attacks, so sparring effectively stops doing anything except for your offence and defence. As such, a pickpocket can easily become almost as good a fighter as warriors are after an IG year in the Byn. To get higher than that on a warrior takes very long and surprisingly few do so as there's maybe five types of realistically fightable mobs in the game that can consistently dodge your attacks enough to take you beyond journeyman. - Thus becomes a very versatile character choice for someone who wants to be an okay fighter with stealth. Slightly less glorious now that these lame, overpowered new subguilds are out, but still, with burglar being worthless and assassin taking 30+ days to branch parry, pickpocket is the only easily accessible stealth fighter. - Very fun to play. There's a special thrill about stealing, and you can do some really amazing things like trapping people in their apartment buildings or nicking their weapons before your friend ganks them. Very mobile and perceptive, having sneak, hide, listen, scan, climb and peek. Great for finding out information about people. Excellent snitch class. - There's a room in both city-states that has a shop and isn't lawful. Stealing from a shop is impossible but counts as a failure for the purpose of skillgains. Do it once an hour (if you dare; I suspect it shows up staff-side if they have crime alerts enabled) and you'll have maxed steal in a week without ever getting wanted or having to get outed by failing steal on a PC, and you don't run into the problem of NPCs running out of things to try to steal. Nothing truly spectacular, you just pretty much can't fail steal checks on anything light. If you try to steal heavier objects (8+ pounds or whatever), you can still get the semi-fail where they get an echo but it doesn't say who. Actual failures are practically impossible at maxed steal, but you also can't even try to steal anything heavier than maybe 15 or so. You never get to the point where you can reliably steal while being watched; I'd say maxed steal has about 50% chance to be spoiled by watch. However, you don't get wanted from being caught via watch.

I'm not certain about steal, but with sneak and/or hide, you have a roll with a 1 in 500 chance of a 'critical failure'. I'm not sure entirely what the result is, but I believe it results in everyone present winding up aware of what's going on.

Then it'll get fixed immediately... As someone who enjoys playing thief characters, I'd appreciate if you would pm them to me, then?
