I hope that, whatever new game becomes the it game we settle on something where it's less difficult than Armageddon to make friends with people who play, and to link up with people whom you are real life friends with.
I don't think it should be that hard to find a competitive hack & slash game that has RP potential.

I met one of my closest friends of ~4-5 years, who I've met irl, through Armageddon. On this forum, to be specific. And I've made several other really good ones, mainly through the original Shadowspeak. What more do you want? An obnoxious in-game ooc channel? Part of me feels like MUDs will never recover as a medium. Unfortunate.

An obnoxious in-game ooc channel? Given that most of the people here are cool, there seems to me to be little reason why we can't all play characters in like a historic tribe of Apache, or as space pirates, or as characters trapped in a zombie apocalypse. You're awesome and you're someone I would cheerfully have as a rival in Armageddon or wherever. You might make a good templar and I might make a good raider. But can you seriously imagine if we both pitched that to staff? If they didn't reject the idea outright, we'd get buried under a mountain of paperwork. When really all that we want to do, Bro, is to try to kill each other with bone swords. Part of me feels like MUDs will never recover as a medium. Unfortunate. Scary.

Harshlands is still going quite strong. Stronger than it was three or four years ago, in fact - typical numbers are up to 25-30, pushing 35 at times. It just doesn't get much exposure. Orbaal's good for people into might makes right and whatnot, though its player numbers are kind of thin on the ground, with people in both Geldeheim and Leriel and elsewhere, too. I wouldn't call Tashal the main place any longer, though it was for several years - it's largely inhabited these days by the sorts of people some on these boards just love to hate, or at least, that's my experience of it. The Trobridge area has seen a surge in PC numbers, including an awful lot more of the dark faiths, with the Agrikans going particularly strong, and gradually gaining influence in Trobridge itself.
