Short history lesson: In Dark Sun, a Defiler/Preserver/Elemental Cleric who had significant psionic abilities would eventually start turning into Dragon/Avangion or transform into an Elemental and back and slowly lose the ability to into a human.
To my knowledge, all three of these exist in Arm to some regard, and I've seen examples of Dragons/Elementals on these boards (not to mention the lore stuff). The process, to my knowledge, is very gradual and doesn't require psionic mastery (and ends with your character being stored). Also, you get a bunch of cool stuff. As a huge fan of Dark Sun, I want to know what these are/were like in Arm if anyone has any experience with them.

Dragons and avangions are mostly just a background thing. There's the dragon, and some defilers are said to have been working towards becoming dragons, but I don't think any accomplished it. Maybe someone like Plainsman did it virtually when the player (Halaster) retired from the game. The only avangion I know of is the one in the Akei'ta Va tribe or whatever it was called, which wasn't fully transformed yet. It had some messed-up description looking sort of like a human/butterfly hybrid and it just chilled in a tent in the camp. Never heard of it being involved in any RPTs or anything, but that doesn't mean it wasn't. I only played in that tribe once and never saw it animated.
A number of elementalist chars were allowed to turn into elementals. They got to be playable half-elementals for a while and then eventually they're stored when the transformation is complete. I don't believe this is allowed anymore. It pretty much worked like this: "I'd like to become a half-elemental, knowing that it comes with a countdown to my character's storage." If staff thought you were worthy and you'd done the prerequisite roleplay, they'd grant it. It mostly happened during the Reborn clown fiesta where everything was allowed.
Mortal players becoming dragons and avangions is something I doubt was ever even considered. These beings are basically gods.

Something akin to a tembo, a man, and a kenku stoops here. Filled with energetic musculature, covered in a striped layer of scar-free flesh, this thing exudes power. A wide mouth filled with tembo teeth, the eyes as well similar to that creature, break open a face that looks only vaguely humanoid. Curving talons tip each finger, and hardy, silver-feathered wings sprout from the back. A vibrant set of bright hued feathers sprout from the wrists and race back along the arms, moving from silver to red to brilliant blue as they coat the body of this odd looking being. The vibrant, bestial creature is in excellent condition.
And he's been animated pleeeeeeenty.

WTF is that thing?
Does it use magic or just cut you open with talons?

Depending on how far along they are in their transformation, avangions are supposed to become completely incapable of physical combat and barely have the use of their arms. That's in Athas, though. Zalanthan avangions could be different. Judging by Athasian lore, that avangion seems mid-level.

I've never even seen an actual preserver in game.

A preserver is just a sorc who gathers from herself instead of the world. The last known dead one was probably tusk.
That was a shaman of Akei'ta'var. Basically the npc leadership. Whenever the tribe had gick touched plots inserted from staff, the shaman was the one who did it. He was also often used to teach a sorc pc magick. There werent that many akei sorcs really. Ane thematically the shaman allowed only one apprentice.
I think there is a log about akei that involved him. Some petty who shagged whom scene.

I hate how the legacy of cool plots like that end up in who shagged whom.
Ah, Tusk. There's an old name I know.
If knowledge gets lost IC, then you pretty much have to use NPC's to bring it back in. That's the good of them, I think. But they can't run everything or there's nothing for the players to do.

That creature you described doesn't sound like an Avangion, at least as far as Dark Sun goes. Though I've heard that Avangions in Arm are supposed to be more Wyvern like. That sounds like someone took the angle of a dragon and made it a bird instead of a lizard.
I may have met a Preserver before. Someone was watering a plant when I met them outside Allanak. I didn't bring it up because I shouldn't have known that info IC. Of course, I'm not sure why a Sorcerer would be so close to a city...

Even though it's a coded world that will not likely be expanded upon... I have always wondered... dreamed even... *puts on rose-tinted glasses*
What's beyond the silt sea? What's west of mantis lands and the canyons? Where did the kryl come from? Do giants still exist? Why haven't they expanded on those canyons east of the salt flats? Why are those ruins of Steinal to explore?
So many cool things to explore, so little life from the staff.
edit: sorry off-topic from thread but I thought maybe they share the same vein of interest...

There is a statue of an Avangelion in Teks tree garden. The real one. Think asgardians from stargate, but with wings.
All in all. Zalanthas is based on Dark Suns, but dark suns it is not. So the point is moot.
The whole who shagged whom. Why the hate, bro? Let people have fun how they like. Nothing is stopping you from involving yourself in their plots and making them different IG, but OOG that plot has the same rights for existence as yours do.

Heh. I just dislike how the only residue of some of these long-running plots is a log of someone's mudsex session.
Oh look. Fantastic ruins. Eerie sounds. Eldritch power seeping from ... oh ... you fucked an aide here. Thought I'd found something new.

I'll admit. I would've given that reaction more credence if you at the very least went over to the arm's logs section and 'read' the log. I mean, I found the scene to be pretty lame as well. But at least I've got data to judge by. You're judging with zero data and proclivity for bias that is considered "cool" on these forums.
