I am right there with Nergal, though... I think trying to be a staff member on a game that relies on a subjective and entirely arbitrary rewards system as a means to keep people interested while simultaneously dealing with the aftermath of a culture war between factions of obsessive text based role players would probably, I dunno, make me want to take up model trains and cable television as hobbies or some shit.
They probably need to hire the next round of staff by hitting up masochism fetish forums and find some real gluttons for abuse. I mean, Jesus fucking Christ.

Socializers AREN'T the problem, socializers are simply an aspect of any game. what is the problem, is the systemic toxin that still hangs in the air like a slow, wet fart.

Socializers AREN'T the problem, socializers are simply an aspect of any game. what is the problem, is the systemic toxin that still hangs in the air like a slow, wet fart. The problem is allowing any one subset of players to "win". If you turn the dial too far to winning, you get progress quest style fully scripted games. If you turn the game into dressup and tea parties, you get what gemstone is turning into. That said, my point was being highly amused at selecting a "chosen" social group, only to be demonized and taunted (S attacks) by members of that group until the chooser didnt feel like part of the group anymore.

The problem is he expected a real discussion and got peanut gallery answers. It's a vicious cycle, complain about not getting a serious discussion from staff and when staff asks for feedback, shit it up so bad staff says fuck it. He probably would've gotten a better discussion asking here instead of the gdb.

Interestingly after reading this thread again and post by post in this image, it's clear to me that one of the following is true: 1. Sleepyhead stupidly did sockpuppet from the same ip address instead of using a vpn to hide their original ip address. Nergal simply saw the same ip and called them out. 2. Sleepyhead did use a vpn to sockpuppet, but who the fuck cares it's just a video game message board. Nergal in this case would have been cyber-stalking players yet again to deduce who is what, comparing writing styles, time of post, their mother's maiden name, and so on. 3. Sleepyhead did not do any of the claimed sockpuppeting, and Nergal is mis-associating players with other players as he did with me. A complete failure. Sad. #nergal

This is what you get when you spend years systematically alienating people with integrity and sense. Those who had it saw the problems with Armageddon, brought up their concernes, and were hounded out of the community for daring to complain. Now you're left with the kinds of people who care more about their privileges and personal gains than about the well-being of the game, and you cannot have a meaningful discussion with such people. That's the bed you've made, Noted Liar Nergal. Now go lie down in it and cry.

Self loathing directed outward. Everything that bothers us are of our own creation. Nergal, you created this.

I think this thread has some good analysis, and certainly some clever memes, but I have a slightly different take on the root cause of this particular morass.
I think that all of this is the indirect result of a staffing culture that's hyperfocused on secrecy, and the prevention of cheating. Major intelligence agencies struggle to protect secrets that are overall less salacious than the secrets that the staff are protecting, at least in the context of the public's desire to know, and they have the power to arrest/shoot people. And regarding the cheating, if you go looking for cheating, you will certainly find it. Witch hunters have never been very unsuccessful at finding witches, should they choose to go looking. This kind of paranoia seems to dominate player/staff interactions.
The other tenet of the problem is the wide distribution between what the cool kids have in game, and what the have-nots are able to access. This gap entices players to do sneaky and disingenuous things to get ahead. Like someone said recently in another thread, nobody wants to be the eight-day warrior to get one-shotted in an HRPT.
I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying watching the game melt down. I really loved the game at one point, you would think that all of this would be painful to watch. Puzzlingly, I'm having way more fun watching the game melt down than I've ever had playing it.
