Just going to put this right here. If you don't care about the new community site or Project Redshift but you are interested in what various game staff have to say on game design, roleplay, and other topics. Than this is the thread for you. I will be updating this thread whenever we post a new article or announce a contest. Why? Because I don't think you should have to religiously visit Optional Realities just to read articles and get in on sweet contests that's why. Also it's in the title, shameless plugging.
Alucard, a former SOI storyteller, reveals his thoughts on events & RPTs! Do you agree with him? Do you not agree with him? Do you think I'm wasting your time and you want better articles? Comment here or Join the Discussion on Optional Realities!
Do you think you you're smarter than your current games staff? Do you know all the answers to the deep questions of game design? Have you just been waiting for the right engine to break the entire mold and make the minecraft of MUDs?
Somebody mentioned Project Redshift considering a p2p model. What does the team at Optional Realities think about the viability of p2p schemes with MUDs, especially RP-focused MUDs? Is there a place for p2p in permadeath MUDs?
I do not believe that the text-based game community would support an RPI/RPE/RPG that is pay to play. Whether it is a one time purchase or a monthly subscription. MMOs with 10s to 100s of people are not able to get that kind of commitment from much larger playerbases. In addition the legacy of the diku engine has ingrained a very suspicious response to trying to profit off of MUDs.
That being said I do believe a system similar to Riot Games - League of Legends or a Patreon campaign could be a viable means to fund the development or running of a game with a full time staff. This is of course assuming that you have an engine with a license which allows for this.
TLDR - Project Redshift will not require a purchase or monthly subscription, ever.
To clarify the Riot - League of Legends model is purely cosmetic and provides no 'perks'. No housing, no buffs, no XP gains, no reward which affects the actual gameplay. In addition the Riot - League of Legends model (for the most part) allows you to achieve the same thing with money as with 58 hours of playtime.
Pay for Perk does not belong in any serious RP game.
EDIT - Example you can buy a champion with RP (which is cash) or IP (which is earned by playing). I believe the formula is 58hours of playtime will get you the most expensive champion options possible. As it pertains to League of Legends.
Thank you for your article Alaire and also for you and Jazet actually engaging with players who have critical feedback about your game and your staff approach. Even if it has been on this board and not OR, I think it's important for the health of our genre that we stop trying to keep things behind closed doors or downplay them.
psyxypher: I'd be ashamed of myself if my bad experiences stopped you from /at least/ trying.

psyxypher: Though, I would like an alternative to Karma. I've come up with a few.

nile: not arm does a lot of call outs for crafts etc...tough to be one as your subguild but it shouldn't be your main focus either. i also tend to find them just useful for coins etc really...that said, not arm is far more accommodating if you want shit done

psyxypher: Would be nice if when you use the Craft command to see recipes you could make, that you could piece together what other ingredients are. Right now I'm flopping between trying for another character or seeing if I can weather this out.
Mar 27, 2020 15:08:04 GMT -5
psyxypher: Both sound like pretty terrible options, to be honest.
Mar 27, 2020 15:08:17 GMT -5
vex: If you aren't having fun with it, do something else. Why waste leisure time, on something not making you happy? It makes no sense at all.
Mar 27, 2020 15:36:32 GMT -5
psyxypher: Mainly 'cause I'm worried my next character will be even less fun....but you're right.
Mar 27, 2020 17:26:41 GMT -5
psyxypher: Is there a board for ideas you'd want to add to the game?
Mar 28, 2020 18:52:21 GMT -5
nile: use the 'idea xxxx' command
Mar 30, 2020 4:22:28 GMT -5
psyxypher: I like having all my crazy ideas in one place. And getting feedback.
Mar 30, 2020 21:51:53 GMT -5
explayer: You can't count on the staff to read GDB threads. If you want a record of your ideas, submit them one by one using their request tool.
Mar 31, 2020 3:16:47 GMT -5
psyxypher: Again, I want some feedback from players before I put the ideas in.
Mar 31, 2020 9:22:24 GMT -5
explayer: Yeah, good luck with that. The GDB hates anything that isn't proposed by the staff.
Mar 31, 2020 13:01:21 GMT -5
vex: They also hate anything, that IS proposed by staff.
Mar 31, 2020 17:45:33 GMT -5
vex: Basically, the GDB is a shitchute spectacle of the worst kind, and you should respect yourself more, than to actively seek their opinion on anything.
Mar 31, 2020 17:47:28 GMT -5
vex: And you can pretty much count on them censoring, just about anything you post, that upsets one of their discord sluts, too.
Mar 31, 2020 17:49:32 GMT -5
psyxypher: I gave up on Arm a /long/ time ago. Like, sometime around Hasan's death, to be precise.
Mar 31, 2020 22:59:08 GMT -5
jkarr: did u run with hasan back then
Apr 1, 2020 9:57:56 GMT -5
psyxypher: Not at all. I was a turbo-noob back then.
