You're supposed to use a team of 'volunteers'.
Too bad there isn't a Bangladeshi sweatshop somewhere that could churn out a mud.

OR - Optional Realities, the very joke you are asking if anyone remembers. Do -you- even remember?

Wait you were expecting people who subscribed to your blogosphere to pay you 10$ USD a month?

Wait you were expecting people who subscribed to your blogosphere to pay you 10$ USD a month? You really are dumb, aren't you? edit to be helpful: So Optional Realities was the the blogosphere/media platform and Project Redshift was the sci-fi mud being built from the ground up by Jeshin (who headed OR) and a few others. Project Redshift was likely going to have a $10 USD monthly sub, which I think was a decent idea. Unfortunately Redshift didn't pan out and OR went down not long after afaik. Can you actually read the thread before filling it with your shitty posts, you neanderthal? Thanks.

Actually Project Redshift would have been free! The issue was paying for development out of pocket and overly ambitious feature list. Several people suggested some source of crowd funding and presuming a general 10 USD/monthly from 100% of the forum user base would have made it possible, but then I outline why it was completely impractical to ask for that.
Based on experiences on MUSHes and seeing other RPI games, I would probably go with a more trimmed down feature list these days primarily because people just want a place to RP. Coded support/systems for RPing are appreciated but like all things people are creative and will take what they can get as long as the administration isn't terrible (sometimes even if it is) and if the theme is something they are interested in.

I was almost certain I remember a subscription model being discussed for Redshift on OR, either by you and/or Songweaver. I think NOT tapping into the whole patreon/monthly subscription market is a mistake and something that could be used in the future to incentive new MUDs with consistent updates and accountable staffing. The whole genre is obviously hurting for new content (which will hopefully be alleviated with the release of FutureMUD on a public scale). Coded features come secondary to a good story, staff and playerbase - but coded features are also pretty important for a RPI and helps alleviate workload, eliminates favoritism and cheating to some extent, etc. Patreon/monthly subs have worked for a plethora of other genres with a lot of success and I don't see why it would be any different with MUDs/RPIs. Interesting avenue of discussion, nonetheless.

We were considering a few options.
1. Patreon for a sort of seasonal storytelling. People who were Patreon's would get timeslots for staff animations and priority to their requests.
2. Some form of optional sub / microtransactions wherein you'd get some in-game currency and can spend it on the equivalent of vanity items or getting art or something.
All of the funding stuff was high level discussed because we believed that the thing holding back MUDs/Text-based RPGs was the inability to monetize because of the legacy licenses. Ironically I believe diku developers came out in the last year and announced monetization is permissable.
Nowadays after all this time has passed and I've been around the block a couple more times. If I were to monetize a released game I would focus on narrative. Like artists on patreon and mapmakers and module writers (for RPGs) I would say subscribe and you are funding the writers and coders for this project. You will get non-winnery benefits and always be given a hook to get into the story and even hands on time with a staffer to make sure we tailor it to your character.
As a side note the 2 monetizations I have seen that seem acceptable are HavenRPG and SindomeMUX. Both have a donate for credits to get benefits etc etc and both (in my experience) were able to do so without being pay to win, although Sindome did kind of have a pay for saving time kind of vibe. Not terrible but I could see complaints.

Anything that Jaunt touches will turn to shit and I will steer well clear. If he's involved, I will never even contemplate trying it.
