Just going to put this right here. If you don't care about the new community site or Project Redshift but you are interested in what various game staff have to say on game design, roleplay, and other topics. Than this is the thread for you. I will be updating this thread whenever we post a new article or announce a contest. Why? Because I don't think you should have to religiously visit Optional Realities just to read articles and get in on sweet contests that's why. Also it's in the title, shameless plugging.
Alucard, a former SOI storyteller, reveals his thoughts on events & RPTs! Do you agree with him? Do you not agree with him? Do you think I'm wasting your time and you want better articles? Comment here or Join the Discussion on Optional Realities!
Do you think you you're smarter than your current games staff? Do you know all the answers to the deep questions of game design? Have you just been waiting for the right engine to break the entire mold and make the minecraft of MUDs?
Somebody mentioned Project Redshift considering a p2p model. What does the team at Optional Realities think about the viability of p2p schemes with MUDs, especially RP-focused MUDs? Is there a place for p2p in permadeath MUDs?
I do not believe that the text-based game community would support an RPI/RPE/RPG that is pay to play. Whether it is a one time purchase or a monthly subscription. MMOs with 10s to 100s of people are not able to get that kind of commitment from much larger playerbases. In addition the legacy of the diku engine has ingrained a very suspicious response to trying to profit off of MUDs.
That being said I do believe a system similar to Riot Games - League of Legends or a Patreon campaign could be a viable means to fund the development or running of a game with a full time staff. This is of course assuming that you have an engine with a license which allows for this.
TLDR - Project Redshift will not require a purchase or monthly subscription, ever.
To clarify the Riot - League of Legends model is purely cosmetic and provides no 'perks'. No housing, no buffs, no XP gains, no reward which affects the actual gameplay. In addition the Riot - League of Legends model (for the most part) allows you to achieve the same thing with money as with 58 hours of playtime.
Pay for Perk does not belong in any serious RP game.
EDIT - Example you can buy a champion with RP (which is cash) or IP (which is earned by playing). I believe the formula is 58hours of playtime will get you the most expensive champion options possible. As it pertains to League of Legends.
Thank you for your article Alaire and also for you and Jazet actually engaging with players who have critical feedback about your game and your staff approach. Even if it has been on this board and not OR, I think it's important for the health of our genre that we stop trying to keep things behind closed doors or downplay them.
nile: the only apoc drama be on an arm drama website. lol

nile: almost guarantee arm staff are LOVING this. hahaha. long as the game is good fun it's all a bit irrelevant. but the anti-arm crew giving the arm staff some sense of schadenfreude based purely a forum for whining made me lol

nile: Also, been playing Arm again on an alt account (omfg their ban was easy to get around...and tbh i have more fun in apoc)

vex: Bans are irrelevant, and pointlessly antagonistic. The only game I play, where staff address problems with aggression, bans, and down talk, is Arm. The rest have realized, all that results in, is a bitter player, more inclined towards "revenge" play.

vex: Better to incentivize ideal play and behavior, than try and fail to intimidate and leverage empty threats, because nobody is intimidated by an angry elf fetishist on the internet, and there are virtually no threats a player can't circumvent, easily.

baobob: Arm turned to condemnation, punishment and vengeful retribution against players pretty hard long, long ago. Never turned back.
