Just going to put this right here. If you don't care about the new community site or Project Redshift but you are interested in what various game staff have to say on game design, roleplay, and other topics. Than this is the thread for you. I will be updating this thread whenever we post a new article or announce a contest. Why? Because I don't think you should have to religiously visit Optional Realities just to read articles and get in on sweet contests that's why. Also it's in the title, shameless plugging. The first article is by me - optionalrealities.com/optional-realities-an-introduction-2/The next article is written by a former storyteller from a popular text-based RPG. It'll be out soon! The first contest will be announced soon as well.

Do you think you you're smarter than your current games staff? Do you know all the answers to the deep questions of game design? Have you just been waiting for the right engine to break the entire mold and make the minecraft of MUDs? Check out our engine list optionalrealities.com/forums/index.php?topic=22.0

Somebody mentioned Project Redshift considering a p2p model. What does the team at Optional Realities think about the viability of p2p schemes with MUDs, especially RP-focused MUDs? Is there a place for p2p in permadeath MUDs?

Good Question...
I do not believe that the text-based game community would support an RPI/RPE/RPG that is pay to play. Whether it is a one time purchase or a monthly subscription. MMOs with 10s to 100s of people are not able to get that kind of commitment from much larger playerbases. In addition the legacy of the diku engine has ingrained a very suspicious response to trying to profit off of MUDs.
That being said I do believe a system similar to Riot Games - League of Legends or a Patreon campaign could be a viable means to fund the development or running of a game with a full time staff. This is of course assuming that you have an engine with a license which allows for this.
TLDR - Project Redshift will not require a purchase or monthly subscription, ever.

So you would support a pay for perk system, similar to Aetolia or other IRE games?

No.
To clarify the Riot - League of Legends model is purely cosmetic and provides no 'perks'. No housing, no buffs, no XP gains, no reward which affects the actual gameplay. In addition the Riot - League of Legends model (for the most part) allows you to achieve the same thing with money as with 58 hours of playtime.
Pay for Perk does not belong in any serious RP game.
EDIT - Example you can buy a champion with RP (which is cash) or IP (which is earned by playing). I believe the formula is 58hours of playtime will get you the most expensive champion options possible. As it pertains to League of Legends.

Jeshin: I just wanted to say "Well done!" Any site that brings more traffic to mudding, especially RP mudding is to be embraced! Thanks for your hard work

Thank you for your article Alaire and also for you and Jazet actually engaging with players who have critical feedback about your game and your staff approach. Even if it has been on this board and not OR, I think it's important for the health of our genre that we stop trying to keep things behind closed doors or downplay them.
