When you say "logging in" do you mean entering the guest lounge? Because that automatically generates a random avatar for you to control. It's separate from your actual PC.

I think you're right. I sure did pick swords...but thats because I read melee combat would be implemented before ranged. So I figured there'd be a lot of swordfights and melee at first, might as well try to break it.

I predict a lot of us will be trying to kill each other.

Peculiar!
