Naturally most MUDs will be set in original worlds. While it's not true of Armageddon, most other fantasy MUDs would usually have "races" that have very distinctly bounded ranges of features like skin colour, hair colour etc. Whether that be varieties of Humans (in Middle-Earth, if you are ethnically Harad you're not going to be blonde haired and blue eyed), or specific fantasy races (Sylvan Elves have blonde hair, Noldar Elves have dark hair, etc.) Of course, anyone of any ethnicity can special app select one of these values that's not normally selectable (something that is supported codedly during character creation). I'm well aware that in the real world, there are many exceptions and the boundaries are not as sharply defined, but when you're making a MUD, you have to make abstractions that are the least worst representation of messy real life topics. if im of african decent, will i be better at the sports skill? if im of jewish decent, will i be better at haggling and mercantile skills? if im asian, will by intelligence stat be boosted? To be clear, the "features" I'm talking about are only physical characteristics like hair colour and eye colour, not stats or skill boosts or whatever. Stat modifications are determined by race (in the context of race, this means like "Human" or "Elf" or "Elephant", not race as in the 19th century concept of human race). Skill modifications are determined by culture. |

And i like that you're actually enforcing a degree of visual normalcy. |

I'm surprised nobody has ever accused MUDs of erasing trans* folk, for having such binary gender systems. FutureMUD mostly uses gender to determine what pronouns to use when referring to a character - but what about all the fictionkin who are being oppressed by not using their star/star/starself pronouns for their characters? Let's get this boycott underway!
(On a more serious note, I actually DO want to support a little more non-binary gender in FutureMUD eventually for the gender dysphoric folk, but haven't really come up with a good way to tackle such a sensitive topic in a way that actually adds something to the experience rather than just blundering into it).
Added caveat: I don't mean to offend any legitimate non-binary gendered persons by lumping crazies like otherkin in with them

That's because the average person agrees that trans (gender dysphoric folk) have a legit mental illness. So, might as well code autism, homosexuality, otherkin and an array of birth defects, etc. into FutureMUD. Not even kidding, here. It'll help distinguish the turds from the decent players, where as in Armageddon you have to a bit more squinting. Not that homosexuals, autists or transexuals can't play a decent character or roleplay. But if you make a character with more than one of these 'traits'... well, that's an experience.

Not on FutureMUD, but on any MUD, as I stated in my post. Anyone who discovers Armageddon and says 'oh, I think my first char will be a max height half-breed with no gender and no self-hate (autism)' is a turd. In the same way that I can't take 8 feet arnold schwarzenegger muscled females serious in Arm either. |
