labmud.com/The setting of LabMUD is vague by design, but does draw inspiration from sources such as the video game Portal, the TV series Big Brother and Dead Set, and the popular reality game show, Survivor. It is a charming mix of science fiction survival horror and slapstick. Your character, for reasons unknown both to yourself and your character, has woken up with no memory of their past, and no familiarity with their current surroundings. It can be inferred that the time period the game takes place in is roughly contemporary with present day, and that the game occurs either on Earth, or on a planet functionally identical to Earth. So, where are we now? Right now, we’re focusing on getting the MUD finished, which means wrapping up all building and backend stuff. There are no rooms left to describe, the game world is linked in and most objects have, at this point, been completed. Skills have been finished. Culture has been finished. Ethnicities are being finished as we speak. Chargen has been tweaked to be LabMUD appropriate (rather than FutureMUD appropriate) but may require additional fixes before it’s ready. Still, that’s not a big issue. Time, celestial objects, and language are complete. When can we see LabMUD open to players? Plainly? Whenever it opens. While the game is almost completely built, it does still lack certain coded systems. FutureMUD does not yet have (for example) a combat system, or a crafting system, or weather. LabMUD will probably open before crafting, or even weather, is complete, but we would like to see combat in its very basic form (at least) before throwing the door open. So, yeah. Watch this space. Periodically, we’ll be posting updates and (should our fancy be tickled) narrative fluff. You can also follow us on Twitter if you’d like. We have one of those now. Take my word for it. This shit is going to be good.

I look forward to a new contender in the MUD community and more importantly the debut of a brand new engine for future creators.

I wonder what it means by "ethnicities." In FutureMUD, characters have "Characteristics" such as eye colour, hair colour, hair style, skin colour and the like. Ethnicities primarily control what range of values can be chosen at character creation (and what variable mobs will spawn with). Most fantasy MUDs will be simpler and easier than the real world. I had to do a lot of research to come up with a reasonably representative and fair list of the main ethnic groups for an earth-like MUD, and now the NSA probably thinks I am some sort of racist.

hahahahahaa haahhahahahahahahah ahahahahhhaha fucken wow Naturally most MUDs will be set in original worlds. While it's not true of Armageddon, most other fantasy MUDs would usually have "races" that have very distinctly bounded ranges of features like skin colour, hair colour etc. Whether that be varieties of Humans (in Middle-Earth, if you are ethnically Harad you're not going to be blonde haired and blue eyed), or specific fantasy races (Sylvan Elves have blonde hair, Noldar Elves have dark hair, etc.) Of course, anyone of any ethnicity can special app select one of these values that's not normally selectable (something that is supported codedly during character creation). I'm well aware that in the real world, there are many exceptions and the boundaries are not as sharply defined, but when you're making a MUD, you have to make abstractions that are the least worst representation of messy real life topics.

Is this ethnicity thing to avoid people apping in characters with, say, silver hair and purple eyes?
