Hell yes, talk about tense times. Some of my most favorite moments with the game were waiting to shadow someone out of the danger zone and into freedom.

Curious - how do you guys deal with the OOC guilt of being an assassin?
Your 'role' is to PK. Warriors and rangers are PvE, pickpockets and burglars are PvP, assassins are outright PK what with the backstab and poison. You're expected to end the lives of 30 days, high profile, prominent characters and special roles. And do it with minimum emotes. Just fecking backstab and run or whatever.
I like playing the sneaky types who put mantis heads in people's apartments. Or something like knocking them out, dragging them into a room and putting lotion on their skin. But killing is going to be OOC infuriating.

If you are hired to pk someone, then the responsibility for the pk to have a good reason falls on them, not you. You are an instrument. If you start killing because you cant come up with any other solutions to your problems, that's when you become a shitbag.
PS: I actually like the shadow artist concepts. Not completely, but the concept itself, I like.

Everyone is going to know you're an assassin guild. The moment you fail a sneak or hide people are going to suspect you're assassin. When they see you with two knives they're going to suspect you're an assassin and when you fight like shit, ditto. Assassins can't really pass themselves off as anything except maybe burglars or thieves with a subguild. It's far far easier for a warrior to pretend to be an assassin (would love to see someone do that), or a burglar to pass as an assasssin, etc. It's actually being done, only because I know the individual is a warrior because he countered an npc disarm once and I was hidden watching him. He does not go near that npc anymore, I know he is actively hiding his warrior class, he acts 100% like he's an assassin.

for the record, you do not need to have disarm to counter it. High enough defense allows one to counter disarm/kick/bash. Though the difference between offense/skill and the reverser's defense must be considerable.

Curious - how do you guys deal with the OOC guilt of being an assassin? When you play Arm you're gonna die. it's inevitable. Most ofthe time you'll die to some stupid bullshit. Or be killed by lag. Or get NPC ravaged by a staffer. or drown/fall to your death in a sandstorm. Or get mauled while hunting by one of the countless ubermobs that only feed on other ubermobs because nobody on staff gets how a fucking ecosystem workls. Wouldn't you rather get killed by a good assassin because you had it coming? To actually have your IC choices result in your character's death to another PC? And wouldn't you prefer your killer be a PC who isnt an immpet/tool/cheat? because your character absolutely going to die at some point. And I can tell you those very few times my characters didn't die to stupid bullshit I listed I felt very satisfied with the game. So play a good assassin. Don't be a twink or do retarded shit to kill characters. And if they're not grateful their characters got to die in a meaningful way instead of as punishment for not watching a lightshow, they can feel free to cry about it over on the gdb.

LOL no emote, no matter. none of that shit matters if the player sees the same shit as any other sudden mantishead. unless ur encouraging ooc comms, there is no way to appreciate getting dropped by a killer if there is no dialogued emoting or conversation occurring prior to the kill. it will otherwise appear the same way as someone getting blicked by a mob, possibly sans the doubly mortifying reel echoes. no one gives a fuck who or what theyre killed by if they don't know who, what, why, or how. same difference if all of the answers to those are snuffed (pun intended, biatches)

one thing u'll have to deal with is an entire generation of players that just can't handle the reality of an unsatisfying death. they just can't take dying and not having ooc knowledge of what happened, and the moment something like that occurs when they suspect it isn't a mob and none of their ooc buddies can guess, player complaint 'just in case' goes into effect - and that only works because the current admins cow to it just to even out from the vet numbers they're constantly losing.

This is exactly why you should rarely have ooc reservations about killing someone, especially if someone's paying you to do it. They probably deserved it in some way and gives those "I never left the city in 30 days played" characters something to worry about. It's the circle of life.

I was pretty clearly encouraging killing someone without cheating or being a tool. If youre playing a character and stepping on toes then you get killed by an assassin, you can deduce what led to it. comms unneeded. I couldn't give less of a shit bout theatrics; IC emotes/speeches or otherwise. no one gives a fuck who or what theyre killed by if they don't know who, what, why, or how. Given I do, you're wrong. See? deduction.

Given I do, you're wrong. See? deduction. if ur exception was the rule, this entire argument wouldn't exist. see? logic.

I second BitterFlashback's sentiment on actually caring about caring about the details of death. What's the last time a character of yours killed someone and you had a report on your tail, anyway?

I second BitterFlashback's sentiment on actually caring about caring about the details of death. I've gotta third this.... I'm not sure it's an exception, really. >_>

I'm not sure it's an exception, really. >_> well, if ur saying u give a shit about the who, what, how and why, then ur only arguing my point and supporting the rule, not the exception. if ur saying that u couldn't care less if you're walking around town with no npcs around and suddenly see the mantishead, regardless of whether you 'suspect' who or what entity was responsible, then the gameworld needs more exceptions like u. again, this whole thing wouldn't even be a discussion if players didn't constantly bitch about not getting some flashy warning 'emote' or 'say' before the kill - and players have been bitching about this for years.
