Thirdly, if you can't avoid getting crim-flagged, with maxed out sneak/hide you should be able to stealth past any guards chasing you. If you go over to either spoilers or the log dump, lulz has some logs of his character (Gowan?) icing a Fale Lord in the middle of the Silver Ginka (a tea-house in Allanak) in the middle of the day. I believe he hid until the guards patrolling the room and street outside had cleared the area, and then proceeded to backstab him (raising the crim flag) and then hide/sneak out. Ah, right. One thing to be mindful of when playing an assassin is that some NPC guards/soldiers are coded to patrol certain routes. These routes never change afaik, so it is in your best interest to memorize them and attack ONLY when the perfect opportunity presents itself. Touching on the FW Fale assassination. I noticed there was one soldier IN the tavern that would move, and one on the streets that moved to the east once (hitting a t-bone section IIRC) before turning around and travelling back in a westerly direction. I COULD have attacked the noble with the guards in there and likely would have killed him, BUT I would have been seen, crim-flagged and attacked. I of course decided to wait until that perfect moment presented itself. If I can give one piece of advice when playing an assassin, it would be to master the art of patience. Avoid carelessness. Become obsessive compulsive and a bit anal with your character (if that fits their personality) in everything they say and do. You'll live longer.

Also.
When you plan your hits. Be always open to possibility that the guy is fully aware of your plans. There are a lot of secrets in the game. A lot of schemes and plots. Which means a lot of players have learned to be very good at finding shit out. Not only via OOC means, but ICly as well. Between psioncs, drovians, shadies, to simple rumour mill.
I laughed "hard" when Gowan's contract on some Tuluki ex-templar aide merchant got leaked within a single RL day after he spoke with the lirathans.

I don't recall that specific contract, though Qoriya was trying her damndest to keep me under her thumb. Gowan tried to avoid that hag at all costs. What happened in the end with that contract? Guessing he didn't go through with it since I don't remember killing them, only the 'rinth thugs as the new Proprietor and the nobles for Calus.

Was there more than one Proprietor? I seem to recall one who was a total ass tool. Backstabbing people in the middle of the Mantis and shit.

That was POF Pendeh if I recall.
I wasn't THAT prop, as I had really only run the Mantis a month or so before Nessalin killed me.

I thought the account of the original proprietor was Brom.

Perhaps it was, but I seem to remember someone telling me pof Pendeh was given a new role as the Proprietor of the Mantis. He was supposed to secretly be of Kuraci blood, ring and all.

Say... Just a thought.
You get a secondary backstab with your off-hand weapon, right?
Does it necessarily have to be a stabbing weapon?

Assassins are fairly weak combatants unless they get a lot of practice. They can dish out a lot of damage but have problems taking a hit (at least mine always did) until they're very seasoned (and never as well as a equally skilled ranger or warrior)
Before you think about doing anything illegal, make sure your stealth skills are good enough to get away if something goes wrong. I don't know about night time crim code but attacking someone in most alleys and apartments won't get you wanted. Attacking anyone when there are soldiers in a neighboring room, even if you are in a non-public area will result in becoming wanted. There are some NPCS that walk into alley, these always make good targets. I would usually RP mugging the npcs I found, they never gave up the goods so... I had to take them by force.
When you're using backstab, keep in mind that strength can make a big difference. If you're spiced out on enough melem tuk, it's possible for anyone to kill someone in a single backstab. Note that agility grants a significant ability to avoid being backstabbed, keep this in mind. Having an off-hand weapon (stabbing?) grants some bonus to backstab. I'm not sure but I think two-hand wielding may also.
When possible utilize thrown weapons. Strength gives a generous bonus here too.
When trying to kill a PC use at least two different kinds of poisons.

My point was that it can be difficult trying to cure yourself from two different poisons while fleeing from someone trying to kill you. If you take the cures in the wrong order you risk using up all your cures and still being poisoned.

Same advice applies to almost every character in Arm. True, but even more so with assassins. I waited for hours alone in apartments sometimes, waiting for my mark to return. Only feel and think were my friends.

Only feel and think were my friends. This. The 4 hour wait in a place full of death if you break hide, just so you can follow someone out past the gates after a successful kill. I've done that.
