The weird thing is that if Armageddon had been more transparent, not just about the usual things that you should be transparent about (like ethics and staffing), but about the code, their playerbase would probably be twice as big as a minimum by now. So many people have given up on the game because of how opaque and arbitrary it seems. Those that stay are 99% of the time, those that manage to get the kind of help from other people OOCly, that is technically against the game rules. The even greater tragedy of it is that people would be better RPers and spend more time RPing, if they weren't fixated on the sphinx-like nature of the game's mechanics. It's a filter so they get the kind of people they want to play.

And who can forget Fatty Tor, after getting his face fucking melted, wearing a silver half mask, phantom of the opera style? I never realized it was silver. I always assumed it was "silver", like the silver scorpion goblets, which looked like the real thing but were actually laminated wood. That character had a really colorful life, though. He took control of a half-demon pleasure slave from Nenyuk, which was an active clan at the time that handled apartment and house rentals. Yes, you could rent houses and yes, if you had the influence and the money, you could get more than two keys for your procession of mates, friends, friends mates and everyone who stole the key, since they didn't automagically reset every time someone else took over the property, meaning clever thieves could (and did) have key rings with keys to almost every player rental property in the game. He had the last armed noble house stand-off in the games history, in the Traders, with Oash I think. It was like battle lines forming up, weapons out. A very cool scene. Even the frilly Aides had their daggers out, ready to rumble. At one point, he was tasked with disciplining some bratty noble girl who was running around embarrassing her house, like he had some kind of golden pimp hand. There was a literal coalition of nobles and merchants who wanted to kill him out of jealousy, because he would sit around in taverns, with his grotesque sword, ruined face and disgusting physique, entertaining all the noblewomen, aides and more or less every well-to-do with a vagina. The flirting alone was absurd and sometimes occupied two, even three tables. He was actually banging a Borsail nobleman, if I remember right. It might have been his Borsail noble that was banging the Oashi lord, though. Basically, he banged a lot of noblemen, is what I'm getting at. He was involved in some sorcery, but I'm not too sure to what extent. Nothing compared to the notable Oashi at the time, though. There's a lot more on top of that, which made life all but impossible for the Warlords/ladies that followed in his footsteps, because no one could quite live up to his legend. There was a Warlady who did really well, after she teamed up with a Templar played by Ysania... until the both of them were outplayed by the former Warlords new Borsail noble. The Templar was killed by those politics and her corporal (same one who wore the silver earrings/ring) disappeared without a trace. The Warlady faded and I don't remember how she died, or if she died. He was such an amazing Warlord and balanced the politics and clan agenda so perfectly, they had to retire the role. No one else could sell it. The player, Clegane if I recall correctly, was one of the better and more controversial players the game had and as far as I know, left the game over a dispute with the staff at the time. I preferred his Kadian, though. It takes some guts to hinge your murder plot on the whims of a mekillot. Sincere apologies for necro-ing this thread from last year...and from a poster who apparently doesn't log in any more either. I was just doing some late-night Googling while looking for a lost piece of short fiction I wrote about 20 years ago and this post came up due to some of the names I was typing in trying to find the damned story posted somewhere.. Just wanted to offer heartfelt thanks for all of the kind words. I don't know who the fuck you are, but you apparently remembered more about my Tor pc than even I do. I haven't logged into that MUD in almost 15 years now, but it was super cool to see that some of that shit is remembered so many years after it happened. Had a good time on that game while it lasted. And yes, the half-mask was genuine silver with gold lining around each eyehole. Both metals originally came from a goblet that Iakovitzes swindled out of a Borsail noble pc in a very high stakes card game. Vitzy (long before his warlord days) was originally app'd as a degenerate, lazy, indolent, hedonistic card sharp. All of his clothes were coded with secret 'quick draw' sleeves to flick hole cards out of the folds of fat and silk. It wasn't until the rebellion up north when he got maimed in the fires that he started inclining deeply martial. Also...I reiterate once again that I have no idea who you are, but I am baffled about your closing remark in this post. There were enough big names in that ill-fated 'hunting party' that plenty of old players still remember how they all died...but I can't think of more than three people in the world that ever had the faintest notion that the whole fucking thing was a setup on Lius' part to get his boss (Berlian) killed in a hunting 'accident'. Lius and the two Sergeants were supposed to backstab Berlian while he was tanking the mekillot. But we under-estimated its hitting power and all fucking four of us were dead in like 12 seconds. Good times...but you've got some deep-ass knowledge and a damned impressive memory to remember 21 years later that it was a murder plot, LOL. Kudos. And thanks once again for all of the incredibly kind words.

Holy crap. Blast from the past. Nice to hear from you!
You should have another go, man! Teach the current nobles how it's properly done.

Hah, if by 'around', you mean still above ground instead of below it, yeah...I'm still kicking. But not even remotely 'around' in the MUD community. I doubt I've logged into this board or the GDB more than twice in a decade. Like I said, I only wound up here last night through sheer serendipity. And, for the record, I did try to special app a character after being asked to do so by a couple of Staff members in...hrmn...2011 or so? They pitched it to me over drinks (one of them was a ST at the time for the House I was apping for) and we worked up a neat-as-fuck concept, for which I submitted about 10 pages of background material and had a few old-timers onboard ready to roll with me (Zagren, Cerebus and a few others). Ness shitcanned it personally and threatened to boot out any staffers who approved me for a special app involving a noble or merchant house. I even countered by offering to make him an illegitimate with no real power in the House and was told to go fuck myself. He apparently put a note on my account that ANY special apps or House characters I applied for needed to be run through him directly or they'd be force-stored and the Imm who approved them would be abused. In actuality, my invalid Borsail, Vedelarin, was written under similar threats back in 2002. Cerebus had asked me to come play a noble for him since Borsail was flagging. Ness shitcanned it and said that I was 'toxic' for the playerbase. That interacting with other players in an IC authority position was forbidden because I didn't understand the game world and would ruin newbies who tried to follow me. I wanted to play the character, so I countered and pitched to Cer that I'd play a cripple with demophobia who never even left the estate. He was worried I'd take over the City as a mindbender, so I offered to app Ved as a basic merchant instead, which I did. About 6 months later, Ness booted Cerebus out as Borsail ST specifically because we'd 'broken the agreement' and I had my fingers in too much shit, despite never even leaving my bedroom. he asserted that I had to be doing it all with a network of OOC information. Truth be told, I still have zero clue why Mark has had a hard-on for me since about 1998. Even Sanvean and I buried the hatchet years ago after the Gypsy thing. But Ness actively worked to keep me from playing the game for almost 2 decades. He still does. I think it had something to do with when I played a Reynolte noble back in 1997. Anyway, he's an assfuck and he worked very hard to single-handedly kill my interest in the game. I'd say he more or less succeeded. tl;dr Thanks for the kind thought, but I ain't comin back.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I've had some suspicions about nessalin but I haven't had any run ins with him yet except in discord when I was talking about automation in programming and how it can make life a lot easier when you're creating gaming systems. I've been in and out of mudding for a long time, but RL just takes way more precedence and I don't think I have the energy or patience to do it much longer. I tried one last hoorah at Arm these past few months but I'm disappointed in what I've found so far.

Nessalin is a legendary grudge-holder. hounddog's story doesn't surprise me, but it does add to the ubiquitousness of this simple truth. He's bad at anything else related to Armageddon or staffing besides programming. Ask him about anything related to the game lore and he'll struggle if the answer requires post-2005ish knowledge of the game.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I've had some suspicions about nessalin but I haven't had any run ins with him yet except in discord when I was talking about automation in programming and how it can make life a lot easier when you're creating gaming systems. I tried one last hoorah at Arm these past few months but I'm disappointed in what I've found so far. lmao what happened between now and these posts of yours Not complaining about a discussion, I'm saying there is no discussion to be had here. The game is fine, the game doesn't need our help to fix these grand issues that are regularly spouted by several disgruntled ex-players that post here. I'm all for discussion, I just don't see the point of these threads popping up periodically and they produce nothing of value. With that I will bounce as there is nothing really left for me to say. Yeah but even I'm defending staff though.. I've had some pretty good experiences these past few weeks playing so why so much vitriol directed toward them? I wish people could all just get along sometimes. People are always going to complain about something. I honestly don't even know who Malifaxis/Shaloonsh is. Also I will say that I've been playing recently and haven't had any problems so far. Not saying the game is perfect but it is a far cry from what I experienced in my early days. I'm sure there are still staff avatars out there but I haven't been able to see anything glaringly unfair or corrupt, and my interactions with staff have been cordial. Maybe I will put in for the next staffing round and become the most epic story of redemption Arm has ever seen.

Looks like 4 months of difference? I don't know what your point is. All of those posts are still true. The game is fine but the players have been disappointing.

there's no point being made. i was curious how you went from arguing with ppl about how the game was fine, better than before and having good experiences, to now describing it as being "disappointed" so i asked you a question.
