The thing about Nergal is that he's not a bad dude, but he's nosy as all hell and comes off as such a busybody. Dealing with him got to be exhausting, and I regretted ever joining his clan, despite greatly liking the people in it, and even liking Nergal after a fashion. He was always watching. Always.
The Nergal I saw on the GDB had fairly little resemblance to the Nergal I interacted with via requests and the like. On the GDB, he comes across like a dick, and just another cheerleader given mod powers.
But still. I'd been playing Armageddon for 15 years, and Nergal basically treats you like a newbie, who is ignorant of all things, and trying to patiently explain the game culture to you. And him being a newbie staff. It's like...c'mon man. I've been there, done that, a hundred times. Just ease off and let me get my shit to journeyman so I can enjoy my char without getting raped by a raptor.
But I thought he was a good clan staffer, and if I hadn't been a jaded and hateful soul by then, I'd have liked him even more.

The fact that Nergal exploited the release of the (worthless and ultimately ineffectual) staff wiki to manipulate incensed attitudes and ban "irrationality hostile" undesirables such as myself and RRR shows how incompetent he is within a position of authority. Perhaps he is a decent storyteller; I've only heard middling and mediocre things about him on that front. But don't try to sympathize with the kid. He's incapable of addressing direct critique, going so far as to slander Jeshin on a 3rd party board for not immediately condemning what amounted to an old info dump.
His only capability of response is to those within the safe-space of the GDB; those who are so suppressed and intimidated by the prospect of the same thing happening to them that did to me, that they relinquish criticisms to his non-answers and pseudo-polite dismissals.
Ultimately, just pretending that he isn't all that bad is going to enable him to continue being a negative influence on the dialogue and expression of the game's player majority.

I have to side with purgpurgpurg. Nergal is childish and lacking in leadership qualities. He's too proud of his position and (like a lot of imms) desperately needs to exhibit a bit of humility.

Wait... RRR got banned as well? Really? He hasn't even been playing I thought. So wiki leaks get dropped, and somehow RRR gets targetted? If that's true it makes me sad to not be able to have the chance to play with him again.
Ironic that its Raleris going after Dragean even after death?

Yep: armageddonmud.boards.net/post/27811/threadSo I knew something was up yesterday morning (Eastern Time) when the typical GDB account I've been using was banned. It wasn't until yesterday PM that I checked to confirm that I was also banned from the MUD itself. Interestingly, when they did all that banning (without the courtesy of any notification to me or, apparently, to Jeshin either) they never got around to banning my original GDB account (on the current iteration of the GDB account #69 dude!) handle Red Ranger. So this morning just now I was browsing the GDB using my Red Ranger GDB account when I was suddenly banned. Again, none of this is surprising. What was genuinely surprising was that when they were handing out the bannings they neglected to ban my best known GDB account. The game belongs to the staff, not to the players. The staff can do whatever they want with it, including banning whomever they want for whatever reason they please. They can declare that IC’ly one plus one equals three or that Kurac doesn’t exist or never existed. They can then ban any player that makes the mistake of mentioning Kurac IC’ly (or OOC’ly!) thereafter. It’s their game! Of course, just because they CAN do something doesn’t mean it’s a good idea or that everyone should agree with their decisions. In my opinion, to understand their motivations for banning me one must understand that it’s all about control. It’s understandable that they don’t like me because I disagree with their decisions and I post about it on a public forum openly using my Armageddon identity. But I had nothing to do with the wiki leak and I even hadn’t posted anything about it on the GDB or on the SB one way or the other. I also haven’t had the heart to play Arm since late 2014, as I’ve posted multiple times before. So why ban me from the GDB and the game? Again, IMO it’s about control and they understandably feel even more vulnerable and out of control because of the leak. So they’ve lashed out and I’m a convenient target. Banning me from a game I haven’t played lately doesn’t hurt me and banning me from the GDB doesn’t hurt me. It also does nothing to stop me from posting on the SB, which they don’t like, why would I stop? But in addition to whatever vindictive glee they get from banning me, the real reason for my ban is to reassert control by sending a message to other players: “If you speak up, you could be next. We own this MUD, not you.” In the Staff wiki/docs thread @jaunt has made good points about the need for collaboration, and I agree 100%. In fact I lamented that loss of collaboration in my very first post on the SB when I outted myself: And that’s emblematic of what Armageddon has become for me: squelched player efforts for zero gain. There are no true IC politics and there’s certainly no collaborative effort from the staff to world-build with the players. It’s sad to lose what feels like an old friend..."
I think that those in the playerbase, both on the GDB and on the SB, that have really thought about the problems of Arm have come to the conclusion that there’s a lack of collaboration and they wish there were more. But collaboration requires compromise and ceding some control and I just don’t think that the staff of Arm are interested in loosening their control over the game at all.
Update: Adhira lifted my ban earlier today 2/23/16.

Been part of the community for a nanosecond and ... It suddenly dawned on me, why the official MUD doesn't want anyone coming here.
All this time word of mouth led people to believe it was a cheater's board and I never came because I could give less than two shits about the code "secrets" some players or former players have divulged.
Glad this board is available.

It's a lot more satisfying than the GDB, insofar as discussions go.
Mostly due to no moderators swinging in on a vine, to rescue their buddy, when you call them out on being a disingenuous piece of shit.
There's usually at least something worthwhile to discuss going on, too... as opposed to that Goddamned monogamy thread, or similar threads, where the same five or six insufferable pricks, rehash the same things, forever.

I liked the GDB because it was cool to see your clannies ooc a bit. A Large Brown Bag, is my Sarge in the Fist? She plays a mul? cool. I got banned in the Obama years for political responses. As a libertarian I disagreed with staffers that Somalia was a Libertarian dream but poor American ghettos weren't a Liberal Democratic dream. Never went back.

When you sit on an open storage request for days for a character you never logged in to but wanted to store because you legit forgot you even had one:
*open request tool* *cancel* Reason listed: "...Hold my beer..."

I have _always_ loved and defended the game against claims that it sucks. Edited to add: There is a huge span between loving the game and condemning it because the staff sucks. My account notes show an 18 year history of how I feel about staffing on Armageddon.

I like the idea of a lower tier noble house, for the same reason I like Oash and their meddling with magicks and gemmed. It's built-in motivation towards conflict, and involvement with different tiers of society, without having to come up with flimsy justifications. Jal deals with sewers. Oash deals with witches. Both are dirty, and undesirable, but also something that someone has to deal with.
Jal has, if nothing else, thematic motivation to want to 'move and shake', which with appropriate staff support, could directly equate to PC nobles being more impactful, without necessarily greatly upsetting the status quo. There is even room for the lower House, to move up in status, assuming staff are willing to indulge a more dynamic political experience. Tbh, I think opening the lower Houses and closing the upper ones, would lead to a more competitive political dynamic, where Houses semi-regularly move up or down relative to their PCs successes, or failures.
I mean, slaves aren't even a thing that impact pc play, but sewer crawling/exploring/maintenance runs? That's RPTs, in a relatively unused and underutilized zone, right under Allanak, that can potentially involve the Guild, Kurac and another clan, and certain trades.
A low tier noble is also, imo, has much more leeway with the pcs they interact with directly, and where they do their interactions.
Borsail, not to pick on Borsail, shouldn't even really have a reason to walk over to reds, but simply invite over everyone they want to deal with, or deal with through Aides (which they never do, because all the good Aides work for Oash. "good" being a relative term...). They're incredibly powerful, yet never have to deal with any kind of product or service directed at PCs.
Jal, Oash, Tor and Fale all have applications in the PC world. Oash being the most powerful open noble clan makes more sense, since they're vexed by the stigma of magickal association and influence, which is (or at least, imo, should) be a constant disadvantage when dealing with other nobles, forcing them to also deal with other questionable aspects of society to compensate.
Well, anyways, I think Jal being opened has potential, and at least worth testing out.
