Who are candidates for having been the best of each guild? Most powerful, most accomplished, etc. Preferably recent, not some 1998 stuff where things were completely different. Combat should be after the defense nerf in 2008, magick should be after Halaster's "teeth."

I think the best merchant recently is Agron, because of all of the materials he added to the game. He was also really fun to just be in the same clan with. Really changed the feeling of Salarr to have your boss be a grumpy dwarf.
Edit: Nergal plz don't ban Agron because I mentioned him. Thx

Edit: holy shit, my bad for only reading the title before posting.
Here's a thought. In a RPI, the difference between classes should be perspective based as much as possible versus hard limitations. There are many says to do this, but I'll limit my examples to easily codes implementations. You want players to see as their class, to feel as they are playing in their role, but not suffer from hard lines. A ranger could see further in each direction. Ingredients for crafting could have two flags randomly set, suitable and not, and only someone skilled like a merchant (or certain subclasses) could see. A warrior could craft a weapon for herself, but it would take determination. She would have to make many attempts trying different shafts, etc., where a merchant could have assessed each part prior to. Assassins could have an affinity bonus from marking and stalking their prey. The timer continues to increase as the assassin spends time examining the prey for weaknesses. This isn't to say that the assassin wouldn't have means of killing certain targets instantly (poison, backstab), but it's a way to allow one to kill more impregnable targets with some amount of time and risk. An assassin is hard to balance. We want them to be able to quickly kill a given target; we do not want them running around instakilling everyone. Given this perspective based approach, the assassin would have to masquerade in the presence of the target for some time before striking. It is easiest then, as in real life, to strike at the back of a friend. A warrior could set her own gambling ratios in combat (def/off). This could be called mentality, combat disciplines, whatever. When fighting three people, your only chance is to hope to kill one very quickly to even the odds - you rely on acting batshit crazy and being bold. Rangers could mark prey to some extent as assassins do, towards people or a legendary beast. The effectiveness of marking a prey, meaning the increments the timer collects in and/or the bonus itself, could be affected by wisdom. Merchants could use any weapon, but wouldn't be able to mark prey or control their ratios.
This is the approach I'd take if I made a MUD anyways.

Extended subs ftw.

FYI at the end of Dargan's career, his stats had deteriorated so badly due to old age he was but a shade of his former self in his prime. I won the Kuraci Pit fights with Dargan once and then the next time they held them, Meso KO'd me in one hit after I barely squeaked a win out of two of the other dwarves in Meso's unit. Don't forget Abuzer either. Love him or hate the twinking, he was a brutal warrior.

Makes the story all the richer, getting a behind-the-scene glimpse of the character's life-cycle.

Zarah of Irofel was the pit champion after Meso beat Dargan. Elrum 'Banished' Irofel was going to participate in the pitfights but was widely warned against doing so because there was an 'accidental' death planned for him if he did. So he gave Zarah is baobab long staff to whomp her way to victory. Might have the log of that stuff somewhere.

Sorcerer - Hasan, Shattered Drovian - Bryn. He's the dude that stole a steel helmet from Kurac, sold it to Shiran, who sold it to Kurac, then stole it back from Kurac, then sold it back to Kurac). God-tier Drovian troll. Elkrosian - Bones. Badass who ran around and did all the things. Krathi - Horoz. If the aim of Krathis is to murder and partake in the old ultraviolence, this guy won.
