the first order = successors to the empire
the resistance = supporters of the republic who are fighting back against the first order
kylo ren = han and leias son who fell to the darkside and is allied with the first order and serves supreme leader snoke. he wants to be like grandpa vader
supreme leader snoke = a giant alien looking being who apparently is the big darkside badass
the first order wants to eliminate luke skywalker who is in hiding. they are hunting the new cute r2d2 looking bot because it has a map that will lead to where luke skywalker is hiding, supposedly the jedi temple of legend
the new bot is with a resistance pilot ace (poe). they get split up when the pilot is captured by the first order, but one of the stormtroopers (finn) who didnt like working for the first order helps him escape. the main girl in the movie (rey) is a guild psionicist(jedi) subguild grebber who finds the abandoned bot and keeps him
finn and poe crash when they return to get the bot. finn thinks poe is dead and wanders until he finds the bot and rey. they get chased by the first order and hijack the milennium falcon which was lying in a junkyard to escape.
han solo and chewie, who had been looking for the millenium falcon, find capture and haul them into their new ship and ally with them when they learn their mission. han tells them that luke had begun training a new generation of jedi, but after one of his pupils (kylo ren) betrayed him and ruined what he started, he discarded his lightsaber and went into seclusion out of guilt
they stop at a planet with a watering hole owned by a helpful alien who has lukes lightsaber in her possession. rey touches the lightsaber and gets some visions, freaks out, rejects taking the lightsaber (its given to kylo instead), and when the first order attacks the area, gets captured by them but escapes later when finn and han return to help save her. when shes prisoner shes able to resist kylo rens jedi mind tricks and can use the force
the others meet with the republic leader (leia) on their planet. finn reunites with poe who survived and basicly hails him as a hero for helping him out. it turns out the map the new bot has is incomplete and they need more information. leia and han think they can win their son back to the light side. he kills off his daddy han near the end of the movie, who falls into a ship sinkhole just like darth maul.
finn fights kylo with lukes lightsaber, gets fucked up, then saved by rey who is able to summon the lightsaber when kylo cant, then beats him up a little before the first order planet gets destroyed. stoke mentions taking kylo further into the darkside since hes more committed now with his dad being dead
r2d2 is at first deactivated from his last stint with vader but gets reactivated and has the rest of the map to luke skywalker that fits with the one that the new bot has
leia sends rey off, who flies to the planet and finds a man in a cloak by the edge of a cliff. when she approaches, he turns around and its luke skywalker (mark hamil, yup) and the movie cuts as she offers him his lightsaber back
