I am developing a Scifi MUD using the Evennia codebase. Some of you may remember that I referenced this project before but had decided to table it. Well I am deciding to pursue it now and thus hell or highwater it will be completed.
Why does this matter to you?
If you are a player then it likely won't be relevant for at least a year (at the earliest).
Why are you bringing it up?
I have a clear vision for the game, an understanding of python, and now a committed head coder. What I need is experienced staffers/players that are willing to have ideas bounced off of them and are also willing to bring up things that may be overlooked in development.
I am interested.
Then PM me or contact me at Religiousbum (AIM) or Religiousbum (Skype) and you too can be occasionally asked your opinions and thoughts on MUD design topics!
EDIT - Just to clarify this isn't asking for staff volunteers. This is basically me asking for people who are willing to randomly IM me ideas/concerns they think are beneficial to a MUD project and are not going to get angry at me for randomly IMing them with various questions that I am looking for some feedback on.

I would throw every second of time I have at this if you're shooting for a Shadowrun MUD.

It's not a cops and robbers MUD and it is not similar to shadowrun, to my knowledge.

Im always happy to bounce ideas around. I wish there was a cops and robbers mud. Just sayin. so you could plan a bounty huntr? I would throw every second of time I have at this if you're shooting for a Shadowrun MUD. i considered making one. Kinda glad I didnt. They sem to be cursed.

Cursed? You mean that one that isn't really Shadowrun and only vaguely kinda RPIish?

All of them just seem to be cursd to play like shitty hack and slash. Or what happened with Sindrome. a lot of the problem comes from how SR is dsigned as a tabletop gam. Exprience is given at the end of a mission and applied over downtime. Every time you sit down at the table, weks or months have passed. That translates horrbly to a daly-accessed, open 24/7 online game with players on unpredictably at asymmetric playtimes.
And then theres astral projection. And decking. And rigging. Which are pale comparsons to the actual game. Particularly because things that happen in a fraction of an in-game second on table top take minutes in realtime on a mud.

Heh, Hell, I was thinking something along the lines of Armageddon as far as actual skill progression and stuff like that goes.

Random MUD Questions
1) What is something that is often hit or miss on MUDs for you? (example: stealth can be a waste of time or OP at max with little inbetween) 2) What is the most important gameplay/gameworld aspect of an RPI besides the RP? 3) Would you be willing to try a sci-fi setting? 4) If yes please explain what specifically draws you to a sci-fi setting. If no please explain why you wouldn't try a sci-fi setting. 5) What level of preparation/difficulty do you think is appropriate for a MUD? (example: How much preplanning or obtaining of equipment should be done before going off to do things in the world... To link to arm, how much prep should be done before a successful spider nest attack?)
If anyone is interested in answering these in the forum, via PM, or over AIM. I would certainly appreciate it. Mostly these questions are one-offs that have a chance of someone thinking of something that I or the group I discuss such things with have not thought of yet.

Bolded answers are mine. Random MUD Questions 1) What is something that is often hit or miss on MUDs for you? (example: stealth can be a waste of time or OP at max with little inbetween) Automated real-time combat. A proper turn-based system makes much more sense to me, particularly for an RPI. Ideally, turn-based combat would allow any engaged combatants to enter their commands simultaneously with a timer set for each turn, so that the results and output all happen at the end of the turn and combat doesn't grind to a halt while you wait for each player to take their turn. Real-time combat causes roleplaying to become secondary during combat, and RPI combat systems are inherently simplistic and low-strategy, which has never been particularly interesting or supplementary to the design of an RPI.2) What is the most important gameplay/gameworld aspect of an RPI besides the RP? Interactive world-design, including meaningful crafts and scripts that put the power to change the world in the players' hands, and give the players a lot to explore. I'd prefer a world of 500-1000 very interactive rooms to a world of 5,000 vanilla rooms. I'd prefer 30 crafts that do meaningful things (like build structures, or repair upkeep, or equipment customization/optimization), than 500 crafts that force me to grind for better armor, or allow me to bake 25 different kinds of cupcakes.3) Would you be willing to try a sci-fi setting? Yes. I think it's clear that RPIs are able to branch out beyond the fantasy niche now.4) If yes please explain what specifically draws you to a sci-fi setting. If no please explain why you wouldn't try a sci-fi setting. Sci-fi offers more opportunities for increased interactivity with the gameworld, and IMO, is more immediately accessible to a new player.5) What level of preparation/difficulty do you think is appropriate for a MUD? (example: How much preplanning or obtaining of equipment should be done before going off to do things in the world... To link to arm, how much prep should be done before a successful spider nest attack?) Weapon and armor creep is a problem for RPIs, and something to be wary of. I prefer an extremely challenging setting, but I'm more interested in strategic preparation than equipment grind preparation. If anyone is interested in answering these in the forum, via PM, or over AIM. I would certainly appreciate it. Mostly these questions are one-offs that have a chance of someone thinking of something that I or the group I discuss such things with have not thought of yet.

Sci-fi is a very broad category. Can you narrow it down any?

I'm currently working on a more complete thematic document before I go posting it willynilly... However..
- Futuristic setting where humanity has accessed FTL (faster than light travel) and uses 3D printing as its primary industrial production - The main location will be a ship or station that is crossing the stars in search of something (most likely a habitable world) - Players will be able to fly spaceships, use land vehicles, and explore inhospitable new worlds all while exploring the galaxy - The core themes are Exploration with subthemes in adventure, freedom, and survival
Some notes: Inspirations coming from Stargate Universe, EvE online, FTL, Firefly, and of course Star Trek. Also expect the MUD to follow in Atonements footsteps and have an overarching story which players will directly influence but will be progressing and hopefully not stagnate into the same-y-ness of some other MUDs. After all if you want a world that isn't evolving and responding to players, go play an MMO.
