So during my time playing I've never had a character that had any real need for a ranged weapon until now. I do know I'm having a bitch of a time trying to find a bow that fits my strength but I know precious little about the bows and crossbows in the game and was wondering if anyone that knew more about the topic could enlighten me. So far I'm eying that heavy crossbow up in Tuluk

Ranged weapons can be pretty damaging once your a master, also helps if your taking down large creatures that would most likely destroy you in melee combat. Archery is a bit difficult to increase when you start out though as bolts and arrows cost a fair bit it seems.

Most people twink archery with slingshots.

Salarri will sometimes make master craft bows (for a price) with reduced strength requirements.

Is throw worth it, if you have access to archery as well?

Throw can knock things down to sitting, like bash. I'm not entirely sure how this works though.

Black handled throwing longknives seem to have a solid balance between KD ratio and damage, but my question is more along the lines of...
If you have Archery, and you have throw, is there one that is clearly a superior? Or is it more "If you're in the city/close quarters, you will probably use throw"?

throwing is superior in that master parry can knock away arrows, but not knives... that I've ever seen at least. And you can shoot from 2 rooms away... so I guess thats an advantage.

Is throw worth it, if you have access to archery as well? Throw is absolutely worth it. Especially for half-giants. I suggest you use larger throwing weapons (something that's not a knife) like a stone bolo to increase your odds of stunning/knocking down your quarry.

Throw is the better option if it is max and you have advanced+ sneak/hide. The reason why is because it can stun/knock down your opponent and lag them considerably. Very, very useful if you're part of a group.

I would imagine it wouldn't require being part of a group, either. As a warrior, you could then walk in, and either subdue them down, or immediately disarm and have them in a shitty position. Or as a ranger, the knife was already poisoned.
I mean. Obviously, if you have throw maxed, and a high sneak/hide you're probably just going to walk in and backstab for the extra damage for them being seated.

throw goes off strength for the knockdown as far as I know. Also it is much easier to parry a thrown weapon than an arrow in my experience as well.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll ask here.
Are there any crossbows worth a damn?

No idea I've never used a crossbow before. The real question is how much damage can a crossbow with say a glass bolt (arguably the most damaging tip) do if you shoot them in the same room you're in? If you have master archery I would say that shit would do a lot of damage but I've never tested this and it's a good question.

I've heard you can max throw using dartboards. Any truth to that?
