I was making the case for "neither". To use your example, the soup desired is not on the menu. The restaurant took it off of the menu. They have other soups. You might not like them, but that's okay, people like what they want to like. They've also said they want to bring that soup back, but it might have a new recipe that better fits the tastes of the restaurant. Also, the meal is free, the cooks aren't paid, and you have to bring some of your own cooking supplies if you want a stellar meal. Opted to include the entire quote for context. I'd actually love to meet the guy one day. Not to fight or debate, but just to listen to how he reasons things.

Just walk into a baptist church in the south and you'll see a Nyr at the pulpit.

He left out the part where the cooks knock the bowl out of yor hand if your soup turns out too well. or if you look like youre enjoying it too much. Or if you share your soup with other people who prefer it to the restaurants. Just walk into a baptist church in the south and you'll see a Nyr at the pulpit. Oh come on. he's clearly a fedora-wearing atheist. he's even the right age for it.

The responses in that thread basically amount to 'no, you're wrong, and we're going to be as vague as possible about the reason why.'

You staffed for awhile and you weren't paid. Does that mean you weren't good enough either? Getting paid has no bearing on quality of work.

You staffed for awhile and you weren't paid. Does that mean you weren't good enough either? she clearly said she had a blast and was totes on board. Getting paid has no bearing on quality of work. Equivocation. The original statement was "you're not good enough to get paid" which you've inverted into "being paid would turn you into a better worker". Even ignoring your fallacious argument, the idea people never vary the quality of their work based on pay is so stupid that i can't even think of an analogy for it. are you an academic? We here in the real world dont have tenure.

The repeated use of "volunteer" seems to misrepresent staff's position. Yes, staff have limited resources (time among other things), if they need more there isn't a shortage of volunteers. I think the real issue is how those volunteers' resources (time) are managed. Do staff enjoy being on staff? Why/why not? It's been noted that many storytellers want to do things and they're requests are consistently declined.
As ghaati pointed out, quality of work isn't based on monetary amounts, it's based on talent and motivation. The biggest motivator for performance is personal enjoyment and satisfaction. What's the best way to improve staff member's personal enjoyment and satisfaction? Current staff's solution seems to to reduce their work load. I think a better solution is to make being on staff fun and seem like as little like work as possible. This would make being a volunteer something someone wanted to be, instead of an excuse that is given.

I'm actually NOT qualified to be paid for any gaming job I can think of, unless it involves writing articles about games I've played. Therefore, you are correct. I never said it did affect the quality of work. But if it's some guy volunteering your brain surgery in a seedy alleyway vs a licensed neurosurgeon... which one do you think is going to totally fuck it up? That's more in line with the point I'm trying to make, there.
