I'd be interested in this mud and I don't mind its similarities to Arm. What's holding me back is the explicit vision of the mud as an intense social RPI and its seeming lack of emphasis on combat, exploration, etc. I want Arm but bigger. Being all stuffed into one area with the focus on bar sitting doesn't spark my interest. Am I wrong in my sense about this mud? I like to mix socializing with skilling up and soloing but if I ever have a char that is just stuck socializing I usually get bored and store.

You are very wrong. The majority of the time, people are not crammed into a bar together, there an outpost for elves who don't want to live in the city, there is a good sized wilderness, but it gets very dangerous of course if you are not terribly skilled. Combat can be brutal without proper training and learning how to use combat modes effectively to their best benefits, but socializing is definitely -not- the major focus unless you, as a player, choose for it to be via your own role (mine has 0 usable skills, but that was not one of the base classes, so as a result, tends to socialize a lot, but there's not a focus on it, it's just what i picked, if this makes sense.)

Huh. Daevic stated in his AMA that "The principle idea behind the mud is to remove the huge game world, and force close, personal PC-PC interaction," "it is a small environment," and "The game is designed super small, to force PC interaction." These statements led me to make the assumptions above.

Yes and no. The city is designed so that you are going to have a lot more contact with other pcs if you have a city based pc and you choose to. The keyword there being CHOOSE. And there is a good bit of wilderness outside. I would say he's accurate because there's one main city area to find pcs in and that does force closer interaction, you're not likely (to my knowledge) to find pcs out in the elf outpost just 'hanging out', but you're not forced to sit in a bar and rp conversation to the exclusion of other things by any means. That does not mean that there's not plenty of wilderness (there is) or that you can't go out and die in it like you can in Arm (you can).

I have already created a char and had it approved, just never did anything more after reading those statements in the AMA.

It uses a codebase similar to the one Shadows of Isildur will be launching on in a few weeks. Personally, I have no interest in playing a dead Arm clone. I think the fact you call it an arm clone shows you haven't really played anything, you should probably not play it anyways. It requires reading and learning docs, like a real RPI.

Yeah I would not have put it quite like that but... if you can't be assed to read any of the docs that show what it is (it's not an arm clone, there's a hint), much like anyone who might want to play any rpi but be too lazy to put any time into learning the setting, chances are, the game's not for you.

I respect the staff of Black Sands, as they are attentive at times and very friendly concerning in-game interaction. However, I can't help but laugh at your involvement in these forums. It ranges from you writing a long winded, multi-paragraph post explaining how Black Sands isn't an arm clone, to you apologizing to individuals for the unfortunate experiences in Armageddon and offering them in turn to come over and give Black Sands a try. I have played Black Sands and enjoyed parts of it. I've had friends who have played it for extended periods but are not currently involved with it. Reading and learning docs reveals that the game is related to and inspired by Armageddon MUD, but lacks originality and inspiration, when the game could easily be very interesting and unique with the staff having such a good handle on how the code works.

Black Sands has less in common with Arm than Arm has in common with Dark Sun. Beyond the magic guilds being similarly named there's not a lot of overlap.

How is it inspired by arm? It's harsh? Harsh muds are inspired by the hard difficulty on games, not arm It has a desert? So do most muds, just like it has trees, valleys, mountains, ect. It has elementalists? So does Darksun, so does the Dragonlance series True magic users are evil? Seventh Gate anyone? Any of a dozen other fantasy scenerios, Dark Sun being the most famous? Hate to break it to you, but thats like saying any game with a turtle that can attack you is a copy of Mario Bros.

I will point you to pages two, three and four of this same thread.
It hasn't stated anything that I haven't.

I dunno.
After fiddling around with it some, I'd now be hesitant to call it an Arm clone.
It's got similarities here and there, sure, but the really huge difference is that it's direction can be taken anywhere.
From the looks of it, it's designed to change-- and players actually have the ability to make it happen. Nobody really knows what lands there are to be reclaimed from the Mora or what threats lie beyond them.
Also, the staff are pretty darn solid from what I can see. Which is a major plus.

Hate to break it to you, but thats like saying any game with a turtle that can attack you is a copy of Mario Bros. Exactly. I mean.... Arm is pretty much BUILT around the notion of these unmovable merchant and noble houses, and templars that are given their power by a sorcerer king and use it to oppress the people... all of these things are in pretty direct opposition to things on Black Sands, with its lack of noble AND merchant houses, Sorcerer King being more akin to the Big Bad that's driven everyone into the Valley/Bal-Travas, and Archons being not only common blood but specifically people of common blood who are heroes of the people and attain the rank due to their deeds. This shit of people calling one a clone of the other just because elementalists exist in both (like they do in a fuckload of games and settings, tyvm) and sorcery being destructive of the world and hunted down (does Arm somehow supercede the Dark Sun setting that Arm itself was built on to somehow be the thing that any game with this sort of sorcery would resemble more so than the place it came from?) being looked at as a reason for people who can't be assed to get a clue as to the setting or world of another game is shit.

How Beta is this MUD? I'm finding a lot of things seem to be unimplemented? Crafting and stuff? Shops? Starter gear? I can't even figure out where to get food or water or make monies.
