Anyone have any idea how long does it take to actually max these out? I know probably slow to get to 100, but sometimes I wonder since it seems weapon knowledge plays a bigger part in defense? However maybe that is just when fighting things with weapons.
I do not believe weapon skills plays any part when defending against animals, so it all about defense skill then? I know you can still parry attacks from animals but in general I'm wondering if its mostly defense skill that determines how well you perform against them?

It takes a long, long time unless all you do is twink/train. Fighting critters barehanded helps but staff have apparently cracked down on that. Fail a bash even if you're not a warrior and fight on your butt.
Weapon skills only factor in against humanoids, NOT critters. Unless a raptor is wielding a sword, your slashing skill will not be factored into the combat, but rather your base defense and armor.

Parry and shield-use too. That's only for defense though. Weaponskill factors into resisting disarm from some critters.

wow. It kinda makes you appreciate those bonuses to wildlife rangers get, since they are pretty effective at fighting almost anything short of a bahamet/mek even before they branch parry. I know it takes a assassin an insane amount of time to be anywhere near as effective but they do eventually become so as well I suppose, depending on their riding skills.

I'm bumping this because I've seen weird shit like raptors wielding clubs and shortswords before.

Just worth noting. While your weapon skills only help in defense against others who use weapon skills themselves, not having any weapons equipped (Even the ones you dont have a skill for), gives you major penalties to your general defense.
A weak 0 hour merchant who's wielding a skinning knife is somewhat more difficult to kill then 0 hour warrior who is totally unarmed.
Very loosely speaking.

Do shields count for the unarmed penalty?

I generally consider shields to be a "tool" item that, when held, provide a +block bonus but are otherwise useless.
Thats not ENTIRELY correct, but you can't whip the shield around and use it as a bludgeoning weapon or anything. Unless some enterprising mastercrafter can convince a staffer to make a "flip" version that IS, but I don't think thats how the code works.

So, they don't mitigate the unarmed defense penalty?

A good way to check, would be to es, ep, and etwo the shield, and see if you are flagged as "armed" or not. The prompt has a setting, I think its %a or %A.

Pretty sure having a shield is considered Armed. I believe whirans/viv lose the def penalty while all they're wielding is their magickal shields.
