If Im a pickpocket and decide to train with an axe is there any point to it? Yes. There are hidden Offense stats, like 'chopping weapons vs humanoids' or 'slashing weapons vs 'humanoids' that go up to a 100, and can be grinded out. Also, a pickpocket will always be better off using a weapon skill they do get, since even those modest extra 30-40 points is a VERY BIG DEAL. But you can actually become quite adept offensively with any class using any weapon, especially those who can wrangle other bonuses, such as massive strength boosts they can combine with two-handed weapons. What fucks you is defense. Weapon skill gives a bonus to parry, and parry itself is massively important. It can be very difficult to get past a maxed parry user, without having a nearly maxed weapon skill to help offset it combined with your high Offense. It's also really easy to get disarmed. But I've had several magickers that could easily kill a carru or gith with just mundane weapons, both human, dwarf and delf.

Ah,
I was hoping you could grind a weapon skill you don't have to earn a defence against it. No real reason to use an axe when I can stab and slash.

What is the best way to maximise ones defence then?

What is the best way to maximise ones defence then? Every time you take damage, there's a hidden check, based on how big of a hit it was, that gives you a percentage-based change of raising your Defense. It's why they added reel code, since people would go let a bahamet hit them once and then run away. There seems to be a greater likelihood of raising it, if you don't have parry, or if you have parry, aren't wielding a weapon. Boxing is the best way to raise offense and defense fast. The method I used to get sky high Defense, was to first become a badass, and then have people spar me with them using their weapons and me using only my fists.

So it's a better strategy to avoid branching parry for as long as possible

I bet those weapon skill bumps are really useful for warriors because you'll start at the usual warrior cap for one of your weapons skills, but your off/def will still be base, freely giving you those sweet fails that most of those who equal you in weapons skills have to twink hard to get.

The weapon skill bumps are incredibly useful for warriors. Get two weapon bumps to slashing if in the South, and get two to chopping if in the north. You'll end up with slashing (advanced) or chopping (advanced) from day one.

At most they are 10% bonuses for each bump (not 20).

I was under impression it just went by skill names? from apprentice to journeyman, from journey to advanced? Regardless of the percentage itself? Am I wrong?

I thought this too, but Nyr actually posted somewhere that it doesn't work that way. A character with a starting slashing of apprentice who got two skill bumps would end up near the top of journeyman. This seems to have been confirmed when a player posted on the board that he had gotten to advanced in a culturally favored weapon skill with only a month of grinding due to the new skill bumps.

I have read that the way armqwerty describes is a decent rule of thumb, but some skills will work differently. Weapon skills seem to be one of those exceptions.

If Im a pickpocket and decide to train with an axe is there any point to it? From what I understand you will raise your offense in this scenario. It's less ideal than using a weapon you are proficient with, but could be used to level up offense without taking the unarmed penalty when killing critters.

What is the best way to maximise ones defence then? Wear the most protective armor you can find and fight weak things that are very fast.
