Recent updates added 2 new drovian subs and a nilazi sub
Sounds like Shadow Stalker gets all the ethereal jazz and the power to summon elementals, while Shadow Dancer gets create weapon and the curse/debuff spells.
The big question is, who gets send shadow? That's all anyone cares about. As a 3-karma option, it's possible they both do.
It's also possible staff are monstrously trolly and gave it to neither.

I hate to be a stickler, but Drovians weren't just added, they were returned.
For years, staff's position was that the game was better off without Drovians and Nilazis, saying the game was better off without these antiquated pseudo-elements. What is staff's position now?

I said they added drovian subs, which is accurate, drovian subs never existed before.
I want full mages back as much as the next man (so I can gank them with hammer) but this is technically new content. And clearly staff's position has changed.
I wonder if the 'new spell' vaguely referenced in the release notes goes to one of these.

I might argue whether subguilds are added content or just nerfing content because it's a simple change of what table it exists in guild or subguild. Then copy it 2 times (or whatever) and limit the spell list.
But that being said Drovians are cool and I am glad they and Nilazi are back into the 'general' rotation that is accessible by karma. Returning content is always good imo.

Shadow mages are notorious for Send Shadow, a spell that lets them take a nap somewhere (like a temple or apartment) and send out an ethereal familiar which can only be fucked with by ethereal mobs.
This makes them incredibly potent as spies as they essentially get free eavesdropping. A big part of the reason why they were gone for so long, probably, is how ridiculously good this was. So it's a big question whether or not they get this move back. Summon, for example, the big ganking spell, doesn't seem attainable by anyone.

Ah, I encountered one of those once. It was super annoying in that the dude literally followed me around telling a Templar everything I did or said, but otherwise he had no real power against me.
So they seem to be about the same level of threat as those invisible Whirans who are everywhere now, but not particularly worrisome. Just a different theme.
Not that it matters to me. I'll never have the karma to play one myself.

I imagine they either removed or changed Send Shadow. It was such a dumb spell. Wonder how many plots were thwarted in infancy because Drovians just got to wire-tap all the important PCs in the world with no risk, cost or difficulty involved. Psionicists can/could pretty much do the same, but at least they were a) kill on sight and b) pretty heavily regulated, and failure sometimes exposes the psionicist's identity.

Invisible whirans can sometimes be thwarted with master scan. Send shadow can only be thwarted with detect ethereal, which even templars don't start with (though this may have changed as templars have been totally reworked with the triple ministry setup). And who gets detect ethereal? Drovians. Bit of a joke, they are the only non-sorc class that can counter themselves.
There is an item coded in the game that has an on-use effect that kills all the drovian shadows in the room as you, but afaik there is no way to easily get it, or maybe get it at all.
However drovians still have interesting uses even without send shadow. A sufficiently devilish player can do a lot with their kit.

Instead of breaking it down spell by spell, I'll ask you to just think about the gank potential of a rude dude who can walk through walls unseen, see in the dark, turn a room dark, inflict a debuff on someone, inflict fear on someone, and pierce their armor with his magical blade of +10 fuck you

Ethereal form requires a smart player to use correctly, however, as there are several layers to its proper use.

That's pretty cool. Crazy unbalanced but such is the game.
Though if you think about it, is it really that different from shadowing someone back to their apartment to kill them? Except for the entirely cool theme of it ... still just killing people in their apartment. There's only so many ways to do it.

It's a bit different in that drovians have broader horizons for what they can infiltrate. Not a lot of compounds have ethereal guards. Fucking with the nobility, and robbing them, if you are ballsy enough, is absolutely possible.
But there are several caveats to a drovian's capabilities as regards ethereal form and ethereal items that makes pulling this stuff off unlikely for sub-caveman IQ players.
