I wasn't around, so I don't get why Arm 2.0 was such a thorn in the side, I didn't see that, doesn't mean it wasn't bullshit but I simply was not around to see it go down. I did read reports of admin dickery back in that day, and even if I didn't like Delerak or the things he did, weighing them side by side made me feel like he'd gotten a bad, bad deal. A lot of people talk about it as having been an exciting time to play Arm, some say it was bullshit and the only way to do anything at all was to be a staff pet. Many players were outraged and like OMGz magick makes my mundane character useless because my ranger can't poison arrows and you know, shoot people like a ranger is supposed to do, which makes a ranger almost 20 times scarier than any magicker except a Nilazi, and this lead to the whole karma protest and people dumping their karma, and suddenly mages were horribly cursed. And Halastur was a dick and told Delerak at a player meetup that he loved animating npcs to shit on Delerak specifically, and that one admin decided that when a certain player got drunk and passed out, it would be appropriate to undress them and doll them up again so they'd be suitably cute (which, while I'm not averse to a man in a dress, or messing with people if they pass out before the party is over and drawing all over their face, fucking with their karma and slandering them later where they can't defend themselves is a bit of a fucked move, if she'd done everything but that last part, it would be nothing to see here, just mischevious human behavior).
Did Delerak do bad things? Yes, several, but he was justifiably upset because someone shat in his cereal.
Do I agree with Kronibas blocking stalker nerd girl? Not really, I think there were better ways to handle it, but I also think her response was WAY out of line and Nyr and Nessalin would have been a hundred times better off hearing the man out and giving him his well-deserved, measly point of karma back instead of belittling him and calling him a liar.
Do I believe anyone here is sinless? Far from it. I probably wouldn't talk to a bunch of fuckwits who'd never, ever done anything wrong. That would be boring and also I'd be the worst person in the room, which sucks.
But I can see the underlying problem, staff lacking empathy when they do a thing. The doctor simply does not walk in and say, it's cancer Jim, you're going to die, start writing your will. The doctor knows this news will wound you deeply, and considers how best to not blow unicorns and rainbows up your ass, and then informs you AFTER forming a stratagy that takes your feelings into consideration.
I recently got banned from playing a specific character on discworld MUD for beaking the rules. I subverted that and started to pitch a bitch-fit over the chat channel. Ordinary response would be to get pissed except...
Instead the admin who temporarily banned my character opened up a private discussion with me and explained he didn't hate me, far from it, he just didn't agree with what I was doing, as it was against the rules, and stuck around to playfully shoot the shit with me for a bit. It's nigh impossible to get angry at that, when someone swats your hand and loudly says NO, then gives it a squeeze and tells you, it's not you, it's what you did, and to prove it I'm going to sit right here, talking to you about it, because I understand why you're angry but it's all going to be okay, I understand why everything that happens to you can feel like you're being persecuted, and you are being punished right now, but not out of malicious intent, please, if you don't mind, show me on the doll where the bad man touched you.
So, I find that easier to deal with, infinitely, than someone who fucks you over without ever taking the time to respect you as a human being experiencing difficulties. Hell I even enjoyed talking to them, and I hope it was mutual. There are a number of people who like it when I ramble at them unceasingly, though, admittedly, most don't. But it was an experience I was not used to, and a welcome one at that. There was no feeding into the hostility cycle. The staffer approached me as a human being, and we discussed what happened, then talked and joked a bit about unrelated things. My character is still banned, for now, but it's not the end of the world.
