SOI forums (deleted by staff) due to "bad content"
HavenRPG forums (moderated heavily) to keep "quality discussion"
Go check out both of them. They are either completely empty or average very few posts. At the end of the forum activity is better than quality activity. You can only hate cycle so many times in a serious manner. Want proof? Check out this forum, the most of the content is bullshitting and relaxed. Normally activity dips when there's no big issue or recent events to discuss from ARM. Now keep in mind we can ask questions and discuss topics the GDB can't so our content pool is larger than theirs.
TLDR - The RAT didn't hurt anyone. It allowed the community to BS and gives them an excuse to check the GDB throughout the day from work, home, while playing. It keeps them engaged.

RAT was a symptom of a larger problem. Many posts on the GDB add little or no value. Many are posters massaging each others egos, some have no point at all, they are just noise. The RAT thread catered to this style of posting of 'fun' that has no purpose or substance other than gratifying the poster. Maybe it was good for collecting garbage and letting posters get it out of their system but then there's no motivation or higher standard for posters to make (or attempt to make) quality, well thought out posts. Less is more. While closing the RAT thread does cut down on the party and fun atmosphere of the GDB, it's absence helps to start setting a better tone overall. Isn't that 95% of communication at large though? Here's a short story. I've had three different state jobs. The first was at the Department of Revenue doing data entry when I was 16. Everything was keyed twice by different workers for accuracy (pretty standard). People would get post notes when they made mistakes (often). I was pretty competitive, and at times would literally do twice as much if not more than my cube mates despite not being incentived to do so. The supervisor didn't see mistakes a ratio - more mistakes were simply bad regardless. I eventually fell in line with everyone else. That is, I did as little as possible so I didn't receive bureaucratic BS. You're probably thinking typical government story bro, but how the fuck is that relevant? TL;DR reducing GDB activity will reduce GDB bad activity (edit: while true - per the story, this is not good logic). It's a reduction in pointless posts, if that results in a reduction in activity because there's less pointless posts, is that good or bad? I'd prefer quality over quantity.

A chat box is a good idea.

Define "pointless" posts. Why is a RAT dedicated to Armageddon topics bad but a RAT dedicated to things completely unrelated to the game acceptable?

The random thoughts thread is probably next. Posters are now shifting to post their RATs there instead.

HavenRPG forums (moderated heavily) to keep "quality discussion" That really doesn't deserve to be called "heavily moderated." It's a person with mental health issues using her pretend-mortal account to troll people and then using her moderator account to punish anyone who says anything she doesn't like, publically calling out players in a separate thread where she documents each and every instance of revenge censorship in a smug name-and-shame registry for all to see. That game's forum is an absolute joke and a sad example of what petty shit human beings can do when they're not mentally stable. Moderation has nothing to do with it, it's just abuse and bullying from the staff, to a degree that actually makes Nyr look like a nice guy.

Okay after the random thoughts thread what about the Idle complaints thread, the dating thread, the good things that happened today thread? Pretty much the entire off-topic section of the GDB is "pointless" posting even more so than a RAT that focuses on Armageddon topics.

He's just another ubiquitous loudmouth like rgs or nyr. Would benefit from taking a week off posting anything.
