Always wondered, is there -any- reason to carry around a whip except for rp purposes? Is there any guild/subguild that can actually fight with them?

Whips are pretty much the same deal. Dual-wield doesn't care.

As far as I remember there is actually coded whipping in game. "Use whip <person>" perhaps?

People tended to suicide/store after that happened to them so I believe the feature was taken out.

If whips are a subset of slashing, then they can be used to cleverly work the slashing weapon skill higher.
If whips are a subset of slashing, then they can be a bit of a workaround on other people's defenses vs slashing. Since no one uses whips, they don't have any 'versus humanoid whipping' skill developed.
Go whip some gith, or find out if they game has a sparring whip. I doubt it.

I -think- lightning clerics have a lightning whip weapon they can summon.

Knock someone out, or subdue them. Then whip them until their HP is permanently lowered.

Really other then these few things, no. You don't have a coded reason to have a whip. Just an RP tool.

I'm pretty sure most staff don't even know if whips are a subset of slashing, or what they're good for. The game's code is that byzantine.

I've heard that a long time ago a "whip" skill could branch off of bludgeoning but it was changed.

I also know that there is a whip sold by that slave merchant guy near Hathor's in Allanak that shows up as a "slashing" weapon, but it's kinda terrible all around. Also the only "slashing" whip I've ever seen.

Maybe more or less depending on endurance, it was awhile ago though.

IIRC the HP reduction isn't a feature of the code but it's something staff did to reflect the punishment that was involved. The instances I remember are in the Byn and maybe other organizations where you get whipped and then the HP reduction is a reflection of being maimed. I don't think it's something whips do on their own.
