Gemstone IV announced they're going to offer a free-to-play subscription to new accounts. It's normally a pay-to-play game and they have different tiers of payment, and even different servers at different prices. Played it for awhile a long time ago. Up til now if you wanted an account you could play free for 30 days but have to submit billing info, and opt out if you don't want to play after the 30th day. The new F2P system won't make you supply billing info. As soon as they go live with the freebie system I'll take a peek and maybe kill a few kobolds  |

Not to be a douche, but legit question: why would you play a MUD if not for RPI? Why would you not just play an MMO?

A similar question can be asked of RPI mudders: why play an RPI when you could LARP? Answer: it's not a matter of one or the other. Both are fun and have their own entertainment value. RPI isn't the only type of mud out there and in fact the vast majority of text game players don't play RPIs. You should ask them why they don't play RPIs. |

I played gemstone when it was an aol game. I stopped when I discovered other MUDs and they went subscription based.
My favorite hns mud from back in the day is still around, it's called Tdome II. Nobody plays it, but it's still running.

Why would you not just play an MMO? muds are usually more solo-focused. there also are a number of them that more unconventional/risky in regards to playstyle, etc that a company looking to make multi-millions wouldn't want to risk. etc |

I wouldn't play a game like Gemstone where I am playing alongside people with pay-for-perk accounts. Just no.

LotJ is too PVP oriented for my tastes, at least when i played it. everything in game was just a dressed up reason to PK other people with RP being this flimsy concept that was essentially 'be able to justify your PK' and nothing more.
