Whats with the poor rp coming out of the majority of folks I meet in Tuluk? Hunters going out of their way to enter your room, look at you, then turn around the way they came? A room full of ppl insta-looking at a new comer as they enter before returning to ignoring everyone around them. Over hunting every single creature in the scrubs/grasslands. Its depressing, immersion breaking and makes starting out that much harder/annoying. Just some of the reasons why I avoid the city.

Its poor rp as in how they ignore the world around them and simply skill up. As for the constant emote-less looking, its just annoying.

Maybe there are just a lot of hunters active rather than one person hunting everything?

Tuluk is definitely easier to hunt stuff and live off of it than 'nak when you're a new hunter.
For me, this is an example of where it should be publicly known how skill increases work. People wouldn't go on furry killing frenzies if they knew. From their perspective, they're just trying to become a decent hunter ASAP so they can start roleplaying the role they want already.

The insta-looking is no different than anywhere I've ever been. If there is a new/unfamiliar character that walks into any place in any city, they immediately get insta-looked at by everyone in the room. Tuluk is overhunted yes, it has never not been that way (except when there were IC restrictions on hunting/gathering). There are a few particularly emote-less characters in Tuluk recently, but this comes and goes.

It isn't fair to call it 'nub' city.
It is definitely home to a lot of wooden characters and skill first, character later types, but almost all of them don't seem all that new. A lot of the conversations there read like chat room with next to no character injected to anything.
There are some REALLY good characters there, but most just feel like filler and it gets hard to keep an interest in them even when IC my characters might adore them.
All my northern characters got geared to the gills FAST, but ended up in Allanak for some actual characters to socialize with.
Allanak feels design wise like it got left behind while Tuluk feels like the creative jewel of game, but polar opposites when it comes to interaction between characters.
Also too much pretentious horse shit in Tuluk, like you crib notes just to play properly, which is irritating. Good for shut ins, bad for people who just want to log in and play for a couple hours.
And make bards special app because holy christ on a cracker what a bunch of crap most of them are.
edit: haha, wooden characters, I sound like one of those terrible bards

I found Allanak to be mostly a lot of grunting, and using the old "drop the vowel accent". Most interaction I got there recently was being twink-robbed.

I avoided Tuluk like the plague because holy shit text-based bards that recite songs and describe music to you is just awful

I've wanted to make a bard for a long time, but I haven't because I'm afraid I wouldn't be good at it. I might one of these days. I'd probably spend a good deal of time working out ballads/poems/whatever and the way I want my character portrayed beforehand if I decided to try one though (more so than usual, since in my mind playing a bard would often require playing a role within a role). So, what is it that you don't like about bards you've seen? What have you liked? And why? Could you clarify what you said for me, jcarter? Do you think it's impossible for there to be a good bard in a text environment, or are there just specific behaviors that you don't like? For example, would it be more acceptable in your eyes for a bard to recite poetry instead of singing? Do: Don't: - "Describe music to you" -jcarter

tbh I just don't think that it works in the medium at all and I don't think there's any way to fix it or make it work well in it's current state. If I was king of the MUD, I would make it a coded skill that didn't allow the player to do anything except occasionally emote. The skill would send out single-line echoes every now and then based off the instrument and some other junk, and screw up listen checks in the area. It would make bards actually useful to screw up the absurdness of the listen skill in the game and valuable as well thanks to the skill requirements.

I agree that it's definitely not an ideal medium...I think that the story telling/poetry aspects of being a bard sound feasible, though. But I'm meh about anything involving an instrument. Edit: I like your skill idea.

Yeah, bards should focus more on story telling and poetry rather than "music", simply because it does not translate well via text but stories and poetry does fine.

seems like the same 2 dimensional long-lived cliques who have no character or drive other than max skills and max bank. boring. not that nak is much better but there's less bs and more salt of the earth characters imho
