Hi, new here. Got just a couple of questions. When my mount throws me from its back after getting hit from some beastie, shouldn't it also help me fight the thing? or am I missing a command or skill of some sort? Weapons and skills. If say I have a piercing skill, is it better to draw a small knife with that skill on it, or a much larger sword? I get the role playing and find out in character thing but its just such a steep learning curve for me, not to mention some of the simple skills I'm supposed to already know. Thanks for reading anyway and any help will be appreciated.

I get the role playing and find out in character thing but its just such a steep learning curve for me, not to mention some of the simple skills I'm supposed to already know. Thanks for reading anyway and any help will be appreciated. I'm an oldbie/newbie....that is I played a long time ago and recently came back. There is a steep learning curve, the best thing to do is to pour though this site a few times and the only thing you'll really lack is world knowledge and social type things. Otherwise, you'll be on par with people that have been playing for years more or less. weapons> it's better to use weapons you have the skill for, otherwise you'll just be working with your offense with no bonus. You also get a bonus for certain types of weapons based on your starting location. Mounts> there used to be a time where certain mounts had a "move" you could use while fighting mounted. Now unless you're a ranger or a half-elf, a mount just increases your height while you're fighting. Which is helpful, as long as you don't fall off. one of the things I've noticed is a lot of people just kind of expect you to know things whether you're new or old. Many are reluctant to break character, but will if you will....if that makes sense. In other words, ask ooc and hope you don't get an asshole that gets pissy when you break character. I think this is because some players like to pretend they're new to take advantage of people's ooc kindness, which is kind of fucked up, but I've seen it happen.

No, you can't unleash your beetle on an enemy. If that was so, people would ride up to a desert elf with two beetles behind them, sic 'em on, and wipe that elf out.
Replace elf with anything that isn't a killer threat (bahamet / mekillot).
It's best to use weapons you have the skill for, because otherwise 1. You won't get the skill fails and gains otherwise, and 2. Any weapon you use that you don't have the skill for is running off a penalty, and is pretty much terrible in comparison to something you have journeyman/advanced in.
The shadowboard has all the answers you could hope. Just read everything.

Do not be afraid to OOC and ask more experienced players with questions regarding syntax or the code. Also use the helpers, they generally have no lives and will answer all your questions if you have them. It took me a long freaking time to learn all the minutiae of the game too. Dont sweat it. Enjoy the ride and dont fall on your neck. Unless you're a neck. Then fall on your neck.

IF you're a ranger or half elf, you only have to put up with for like a half day/day played at the most, once you've got ride high enough.

I get the role playing and find out in character thing anyone telling you to find out ic here would be stabbd in the face. unless they were clearly joking. if you explore the boards youll find a pronounced contempt for that gdb phras.

Another benefit of the mount is the noticeable lack of being bashed...except by really mean half-giants. Bash=death. If you want to train ride, my suggestion is to get in a square with something you wanna kill, etwo or dual wield, fight the animal, let it throw you, rinse and repeat once every hour. You won't be falling off forever. That aside, definitely use a weapon type that you have given to you as a skill. As your character lives longer, make sure to level all weapon types you have access to, to some degree. These are key to your defense against the weapons, as well as your offense, so keep that in mind.

Yup, i should have added to that sentence "hence the reason I'm not gonna post on the gdb". Took me a couple of days but I,m glad I found this one.

There used to be a command called pull reins that would make the mount assist you in combat or something. It was removed a long long time ago but I always thought it was cool. It would make having master ride be super cool if you could use your mount in combat like that. Would probably make rangers way too powerful if that were the case though.

l sunback
You look up at a yellow sunback lizard.
This large, lean lizard is colored exactly like the desert sands on his
belly and head, but his back is a yellow-crimson mix, which blends perfectly
with the sky. When sunbacks stand still in the desert, they are very
difficult to spot. Taller than a human, and with a tail almost as long
again, these lizards stand on two legs and make excellent fighting beasts
and mounts.
A yellow sunback lizard is in excellent condition.
A yellow sunback lizard is hitched to you.
I asked the question because "these lizards stand on two legs and make excellent fighting beasts
and mounts.". Just a tad misleading. So I take it I might find one of these mofos attacking me if I ever get good enough to travel far enough. If not then maybe needs reworded.

Sunbacks were the creature that used to have a special attack. It'd whip its tail at your opponent. Pull reins might have been the command to activate it, I don't know, my characters rode kanks back then I don't know why the command/code was removed, but it was, many years ago. As a "mob" the sunback is a decent challenge IIRC. Not monumental but not easy either for a character who isn't buff or wearing/using special gear/magicks etc. Just the average Joe ranger with a weapon.

Yeah, I think rangers don't really need that kind of added power. Or non-elves for that matter, but that's an entirely different story.
Also, you can find out what kind of weapon something is with the assess command, should you ever be confused. It can be helpful in those cases where it's not immediately obvious, as with some knives that are sometimes slashing, or exoticly named weapons.

As a note, sometimes it won't tell you what type of weapon it is. This means you don't have the skill to use it.

ahhhh. right I will check the assess command. not right now of course for identity, but as I said sometimes with skills you are expected to know stuff. for instance if I was a average cooking then, I shouldn't really be eating from the bars or just raw meat. I think the game might need a newbie guide or sumithin. I have read lots of the stuff on the main site and through the forums and sometimes I do find what I need. I could use the command assess, also things like cooking simple things, crafting. Like it took me best part of a RL week waiting in the Gaj to see someone using the ovens to cook and as far as I can see you don't. (polaying just an hour here or there) A proper newbie guide with some, not all, of the basic skills would be advantageous for the whole game I think. Keeping it a bit tight for the discovery IC stuff. Just the small stuff I should already know. In real life I might not be able to cook french toast but I can cook toast by the means of a toaster.
Sorry for the long unreadable paragraph/sentance's I've had a bottle of wine now heheh.
P.s. I played this around the year 2000 on 56kb internet for a day or 2. its my 1st and only MUD so far hehe. I wasn't any good at it then.
