Hello all. Short time lurker, new poster.  I recall in my school days loving statistics. And I'd like to point out that as a decision tool, statistics is 'made' to compare Apples and Oranges, Airliners and Cruise ships, maybe even light bulbs and the sun if you wish. Its just a matter of determining the criteria and gathering the data.

As for the one guy who was having an issue visualizing the premise, that is why charts are so popular. There are more than a few managers that want something broken down as simple as possible so that an idea can be readily understood and quickly disseminated to the rest of the company. The cell phone commercial (Verizon?) where more cell towers equal better coverage equal a bigger bar on the chart.

Something that isn't collected in the data is the player mortality rate. As one of the first generation of mudders I'd like you to consider that one possible decrease in active players is player age and death.  The more data you can consider, the better your prediction.  Eventually muds will become even less popular because the people that grew up with text games as their first computer experience will be less.  It's a natural evolution.  There will probably always be a small crowd that use a mud core to hone their programming skills and their devoted followers who love the genre.

Anyway, just a few of my thoughts as I read this thread today. 

P.S. I recently started playing muds again, nostalgia probably, and I was saddened to learn that one of my favorite diku was no longer available.  Mystic Nights.  It was one of those muds where you where you had one set of gear for killing, and then a set of gear to boost your stats when you were about to level.  I remember it being lots of fun when you were in a clan and doing things as a group, basically to gather better gear and exp.  Anyway, thank you for letting me ramble on.  And apologies in advance if anyone is upset that I mentioned another mud.

The whole point of statistics is to make a statement such as, I think Armagedon is growing, and then doing a very binary thing of does the data support this Yes/No?  It doesn't matter how emotionally invested you are in your particular viewpoint, what does the data indicate? This is how companies test/challenge long held beliefs and when appropriate change them.

No problem BitterFlashback. I should have gone back and edited that myself. Without going back and rereading this thread I think I recall a couple of other people making emotional statements. Without calling them a troll, it does seem all they were trying to do is get you to run another SQL query just to prove/disprove what they said.

As for your chart I liked it. I was expecting the gradual decline that it showed. As for that one line, you stated why it went the other direction. Bravo. If you would, could you say what tools you used? You mentioned that the free chart program was limited. It would be interesting if Ghaati or someone else interested would take the tools and data and replicate to their personal tastes. When I think of statistics, I often think of one of the books an old boss had, How to make statistics lie for you.
