Well, I have nothing to do this afternoon, so look forward to all of the week by week, year by year numbers on new accts vs accts logged in.
PS: Yo, with all this player retention, how come all the numbers aren't actually going up? They are? Nope. Look at them. It stays around 200, with new accounts making up the bulk of any new players. So that 6 you are keeping of new players? You're losing in veterans.
I'm on week 15 of 52. Will post details in a few hours, and if I get bored enough, I might even throw down some graphs and charts.

Just like my job at work, right now, there is no focus on 'retention' as much as "hire more people, throw spaghetti at the wall, and see what sticks". There isn't player RETENTION, its getting more players in, and weeding out that 1/20 that doesn't get disillusioned.

This information could probably have been sorted a little better. Maybe by year, first, and then week. It also might be a good idea to note when these weeks take place - everyone knows summer and holiday weeks are habitually quiet.
Less on the "understanding/mentally parsing this information" side of things: Without knowing how many of the last week's new accounts stayed, it's difficult to back up the statement that new players are only joining as old ones leave. For all we know, according to this new players just aren't sticking around...which would be much more in line with a MUD.
It also might be important to note what constitutes a new account. Is it an account from an IP or range of IP that has never accessed the MUD before? Is it just a new account being made? Is it a new account being made, regardless of location, and actually logging in, passing through the character creation gauntlet, and experiencing the game? These are all important - a number of new accounts could be people trying to dodge bad account notes so they can actually play desert elves at some point in their life, many new accounts may never log in once their character is accepted, and so on.

Actually, it is done as such: January 1-7 2010: new total 2011: new total 2012 new total 2013 new total 2014 new total Then on, through each week of the year. And it is very easy to see a lot of players lost, when you compare numbers from one specific week which has 200ish returning accounts in 2010, 2011, 2012, then in 2013, highest numbers of all of them at 286 logins -until you find out that literally -half- of them are new accounts. Which shows a loss of over 50 players in a year, using the same week of the year, over the course of 5 years of given data, Lizzie. Is it too hard to read with the way I have it laid out? Should I make graphs? I just finished collecting all the numbers.

here are a couple of ideas on how time could be better spent than arguing with people over whether an obscure text game a handful of people play has a declining playerbase: 1)doing anything else pretty sure those ideas would have a lot more weight if they came from someone who didnt take the time to make and run an entire wiki and board devoted to sharing secrets and dissatisfaction with how an obscure text game is being run in the first place pot kettle. anyways i say share it all anaiah

here are a couple of ideas on how time could be better spent than arguing with people over whether an obscure text game a handful of people play has a declining playerbase: 1)doing anything else That supposes there's an argument. This is just a collection of data.

How are you concluding that it's veterans who are leaving to explain the lack of rise in player membership? Someone who played once, 4 months ago, who never played again, isn't a veteran. Yet his absence will count among the "people who no longer play." There are dozens and dozens and dozens of people who signed up and never played at all, or played for a couple of hours and couldn't figure out how to auto-map and gave up, and kids whose moms caught them mudsexing and took their computer away, etc. etc. None of those people have to have been "veterans" for them to be part of the set of "people who don't play Arm anymore."
So, unless you have names and e-mail addresses and account names of every single person who has left Arm, and can tell us how long they were active members, and define "active" so we can understand your context, and then tell us how long ago they stopped playing, Anaiah, your data has no context and is therefore meaningless.

How about going from a ratio of 9 returning accounts to 1 new account (unique logins/new accounts created) to a ratio of 1:1 with the same, and barely raising the number of people playing overall in that week by 10%? That of necessity proves that older accounts are being lost. And that is without even going in and using Nyr's numbers for how many new player's we're supposedly keeping... when the overall numbers ain't exactly climbing. Can you explain how that would work if we are not losing old accounts?

You could be losing random accounts that were older, of people who rarely if ever played in the first place, and were never "veterans" at all, except for the fact of their starting date.
Someone who plays a couple hours every month, who's basically a weekend warrior, never gets involved in anything, has no karma, stays under the radar, doesn't post on the GDB, has no "fans" or kudoses, has nothing of note in their account notes, has no players on his buddy list, doesn't have "the map" or any other files that get passed around, and doesn't really give a shit - isn't a "veteran."
But we have no way of knowing whether these types exist, or how many of them there might be. You are concluding that there's something nefarious going on, when in fact nothing nefarious might be going on at all. Also, some people get older and simply stop being interested in muds. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with Armageddon. It means some people grow out of mudding.
It also could include people who used to play Arm back when it was a H&S, who never really intended to play an RPI but got caught up in it for awhile, played sometimes while it was an RPI, and eventually went back to their H&S roots. Or maybe it was people who were big fans of Halaster, and now that he's long gone, it just isn't the same for them anymore. Or maybe they were pals with Sanvean and only started playing because of her, and now that she's gone, they have no reason to stick around.
Fact remains, you have no idea why people leave, or how many of them were "veterans" and how many were just people who created accounts and poked around and left without ever learning anything about the game at all.
