Not all Shadows of Isildur staff were do-nothings. Just the ones who won the war of attrition to hold onto the server. Also, as much as I love a good conspiracy theory, there's no way the current staff are the same as the old staff with changed names. And if Icarus/Hal and Kite were the same person (again, wrong continents) ... then I witnessed some very disturbingly self-abusive conversations on the wizchat

When other staff are usually the source of all leaks, then I suppose that's one way to muddle information...

Arm isn't going to change, staff are entrenched and think they're doing the best thing and any criticism is just ungrateful trolls shitting on their great ideas. Shade was/is an awesome dude who was really receptive to feedback about the game, balance, bugs, etc and got things done really quickily. Even when there was a small pbase, the staff was running events frequently and with a good attitude despite there being kinks in it with crashes and item loss. I had close to just as much staff animated interactions in the short time I played Black Sands as I have my entire time on Arm. Well it’s pretty easy to pump out animations when you have ~5 players as a peak. Not hating on the guy but let’s be real.

The zones are pretty fucked up there too. I will say staff was pretty pleasant to me but other players were practically non-existent. I saw, maybe, one other person my entire time there and they harassed me and threatened to put me in jail if they caught me selling something without a license.

skip SoI. Play HL. Basically the same thing (there's practically nothing Tolkien about SoI...), but with better code, more players, and decent staff.
I have a dwarf pc on SoI that I haven't touched for like...4-5 months. Just so painful watching my old hobby rot itself beyond recognition.
Like, the writings on the wall when the key staff members spend their mudding hours playing (edit: other muds) instead of..you know, putting effort into their mud.

I can’t even play them anymore without getting an eye twitch. They’re all just..sooooo bad and cheesy and gamey. The last time I played Harshlands, I started in Trobridge and as an Agrikian. I even spent a couple days reading up on the lore and some of that shitty SCA like game world called Harn. lol. I probably should’ve just jumped in without reading anything. My need for making a character that actually belongs in the game world foiled me again. I roll up my character. Get started, hook up with the Agrikians and was immediately appalled at 1) how little the person I was talking to understood the religion. 2) how the person I did talk to above them basically told me in a meta way. “I know they kinda suck, but I have all of the followers I need. We need to make them stronger with followers. Maybe you can kinda help them out with the lore stuff by nudging them in the right direction?” Um, nope eye started twitching. I knew what would’ve happened. Two months later, the person I was supposed to follow would’ve died horrifically or got bored and then I’d end up being the leader and would’ve had to undo all of the two months of damage they did. Nope, been there, done that many times before; saw it coming. Got the T-shirt and burned it.

I tried HL too. The code is awesome, except for the hardcoded "can't make money" bullshit and the game lore was the least inspired shit I have ever seen.

I had a hard time with the Lore too...at first.
Once I got past my own sort of internal bias (being a Tolkien-nut), and sort of discovered the religious/sort of magic side of HL, everything opened up.
The making money thing is really "structured" for guilded/mercenary pcs...less so with shadies like thieves, prostitutes, etc.
But yea, that code...I like it. Has that old SoI feel with a lot better function.

I just wanted to be a hunter for my first couple of characters. But after being mercilessly mauled with semi-permanent wounds I couldn't find anyone to heal and returning triumphant with a wolf skin that nobody would buy ... I gave up.

How is that going? I wish I had time to play one sometimes.

I've been tempted to give Arx a try. I just never tried a MUSH before.
