I actually had the Israeli hacker as a friend on AIM. Their maxxed character saved me from dying of poison right after they offed a gypsy right in front of me. I happened to be there begging to buy a cure. When I found out the MUD was getting shut down because of them I lost my fucking mind and said shit I wish I hadn't.

The best thing in that was Sanvean's talk about how even before she joined the staff they had the worst reputation in the MUD community, and that when someone got killed by what we now call a "world response" they thought it was staff until the hackers took credit. yeh i almost mentioned something about how little staff's reputation has apparently changed over the years, lol

Gold was a lot of fun, but broke A LOT of rules, too.
If we're going to talk about fun dwarves though, I'm going to have to bring up Shade the dancing, singing, projectile-puking-all-over-demons-nobles-and-aides dwarf. I'm somewhat certain he tried to seduce a Templars wife at one point, but it was always so difficult to tell with him. He might have been insulting her, too.

armageddon.org/help/view/HackMaybe next we can get a skill called Slash that attempts to strike through gaps in the armor and do unarmored damage. Then we've got all the bases covered. Seriously, who came up with Hack? "What if I just want to destroy that guy's equipment without doing damage to him!" Did somebody think this game's combat code wasn't silly enough already? Besides, it's hard to imagine where this skill will be worth using. Maybe for show in the arena, but where else does it make sense to delay yourself for a chance to damage the opponent's armor? Unless it's possible to destroy someone's shield in one hack with a high degree of consistency - which would be dumb in and of itself - I can't see much point to this skill. And you can't exactly use it in sparring. Delaying yourself in combat is a big liability and should only be done if the result is a huge advantage for you, like bash and disarm. Smart players don't even really use kick, and that can do a fair bit of direct damage. I'm assuming Hack's delay is similar to the other combat skills, in which case it'll have to be pretty broken to be usable at all. And woe to all if they actually created a skill that lets you consistently destroy pieces of equipment.

My guess is that it's a lame attempt at two things: 1) to create more unique combat skills for their new class system, and 2) to attempt to introduce a new money sink around broken armor, since armor doesn't break for shit in normal combat. Except, as you observed, combat is balanced around doing damage; specifically, maximum damage per hit to trigger reel lock, so using hack effectively wastes a round where you did not do HP damage to a person. I would like to know which of the genius staff came up with this one.

It doesn't even look like it's a skill that causes your attacks to damage armor instead of health. I think it's just an activated skill like kick that does x damage to a shield or piece of armor.

So it's more worthless than kick, because bash and disarm are way more useful than kick will ever be, and kick at least does damage to health...

I mean, technically, if you can get Hack to consistently destroy shields in one attempt, it will be worth using at times as it would basically be disarm for shields. And also completely broken and stupid. I kinda doubt it will do that, however. Chances are it'll do like one level of damage to an item and nobody will ever use it for anything more than novelty. One can only speculate for the time being as they haven't seemed to announce anything about the skill other than the help file. I'm not even sure if it's a conventional skill that you see on your list or just a command that checks your offense/strength or something. However, it seems likely that it works in one of the two aforementioned ways, one of which is broken and the other pointless.

There's a good chance it's a gladiator only skill, too.
If I recall, there was discussion about gladiators getting access to special skills, exclusive access to advanced weapon skills and things like that.

I think it's not the worst idea in the world to "field test" new combat skills on gladiators first before you seriously unbalance the game.
But in the end I question why they would think this is needful on top of the spaghetti code they're using.

Arm staff only implements changes in two ways: immediately and without consent of the players, or seemingly never-ending field tests that are supposed to eventually reach a conclusion. If only gladiators get Hack, I would not be surprised if no one else ever gets them for several months or more.

Maybe things have changed since I last played, but is there anyone besides gladiators and outside Byn sparring sessions who uses shields? Who are players going to skill-up hack against?
