Gotta love how nergal is in complete denial about addiction code and posts so defensively on the topic.

Question about assassins:
How good is sap? Will master sap let you just straight knock people out? Is it best to sap with a sap two handed? How do you ready something sneakily into both hands? Or just start sneaking while two handing it?

I had my AoD sergeant wearing a great Salarr helmet with 110 stamina get cold-cocked by one sap from a stupidly maxed 'rinth elf pickpocket. Master sap will take people out.
If you're using a club and you have decent two-hand, then two-hand. Otherwise: ep sap, es dagger, sap dude, change hands, rs, es dagger. You can't stealthily ready a weapon that isn't sheathed, to my knowledge.

Master sap will take people out. pp sap maxes 30 pts lower than max sap so either u got incredibly unlucky with the neckers skill roll or ur pp was actually an assassin

Type it in-game scrub and find out.

having a high agility is the best protection against getting sapped (or backstabbed)

Doesn't wearing a shield protect against backstabs?

Gotta love how nergal is in complete denial about addiction code and posts so defensively on the topic. Much as I loathe some of the things Nergal's done, he at least says in the thread that he will look into the code at some point to see if there's some validity to the complaints regarding the addiction code, which is, in my opinion, a step in the right direction. Debating whether the effects of addiction are realistic or not is eh, not my cup of tea, but my whole argument is it's a game, it's meant to be an escape, hopefully enjoyable, made all the more fulfilling and immersive from the difficulty level. There's a fine line to walk there. Too accomodating and you ruin what's good about the game, too harsh and you render a common element of the game unsuitable for most players. EDIT: Keep in mind, they are currently looking at and adjusting things involving the procurement and availability of spice in order to make it more than just a flavor thing. If you've been watching the changes, they fixed dat crazy unrealistic crim-code reaction that has been the death of many a good plotline, just as they have with holes and following... so they ARE trying.

And another thing, they've been working on making Red Storm a more interesting place to play. Before, it was just a place to get away from admin dickery and conventional power structures, I don't believe they're trying to change that part, but take a look at the silo apartments (so fucking sweet, touched my William Gibson sentimentalities as it's similar to how the ramshackle bridge shanties were in, was it, Virtual Light? Or some book in that series.), look at the styrax gear that was made, shit really makes Storm even more immersive and grants clues as to the local culture. In your downtime, you can go talk to the NPCs in Storm and learn their stories, some don't do this so never really get the sense of the place and assume the people RPing appropriately in Storm are full of shit and go full on Nak mode with added gristle, that's not what Storm is about by any means, nor can you get many usable clues from the GDB.

I think this is a really good discussion. Just to be clear, what does newbie friendly mean? And what ways can the game be even more accommodating to newbies? And this is key: how can it do those things and still remain Arm? My thoughts on this, and I think they were on the same lines of Najniaj, is Arm has been shitty at helping someone figure out how to start playing the game. When I started playing the game Long Long Ago, In The Before Times, most of the guild docs were misleading lies. "Rukkians can easily find work in caravans" my ass. Pretty much all of the public information told you how to die poor and hungry and the raging shitheads on the GDB would answer pretty much everything with "Find out IC". Well great, thank you, I'll go write another background for another short-lived character and wait 3 days (Long Long Ago) to find out if it was rejected for a single typo that wouldn't have happened if someone could have just fixed it or maybe if the BUILT-IN EDITOR SPELLCHECK COMMAND HAD BEEN MADE PUBLIC. Then I'll go get murdered horribly by an NPC while trying another experiment to learn the game so I can wait to play again. Obviously I stuck with the game and figured it out, but that doesn't mean the problems I overcame weren't legitimate reasons other people would (and did) stop playing. It's not as bad anymore, but Arm still suffers from 1) not having all of the rules in one place and 2) not making it clear to new players how to survive before they start playing. No, "Join a clan and hope someone will walk you through getting along in this game," is not an answer to #2. I don't believe they can change RSV without ruining it. Show me on the doll where they touched it.

"You can go talk to npcs in redstorm and learn their stories" When does someone kill you for asking to many questions? Because thats apart of Storm.
