So journeyman sap is shit? Misses a lot? lags heavily for sure, but how much stun we talking about here with two handed maul or something?
I heard advanced backstab is shit too, but does it auto-poison at least?

I think the popular opinion is that sap and backstab are that weird pair of skills that simply aren't that good unless they're mastered, and I can kinda see why.
If backstab doesn't either instakill or drop the target low enough for poison to finish the job, that leaves you in a position where you have to rely on your other combat skills-- and if your other combat skills are high enough to finish the job without getting your shit kicked in while unable to flee because lag, why not just poison your weapons and use the kill command?
Same thing with sap except less murdery and no poison to help you.

Does it still take a week to special app stuff if you have no karma?

Yeah but does slipknife backstab auto-poison if it hits? That might be some op shit on a warrior. On a dorf/rithi/warrior.
Too bad I don't feel like apping anything.
Every time I even feel like playing, I see karma and think 'fuck this shit.'

This is how you utilize journeyman combat skills (or abuse them, I guess)
1. Have 2 people 2. Have 1 person 'tank' 3. Have 1 person type charge, trample, sap, backstab, throw, whatever 4. After they have done the combat ability, type disengage, repeat
Example
Elrum and Aon were 2 rangers in Tuluk. During their tenure they basically led the volunteer patrols blah blah blah. Anyway the Faithful liked hunting kryl and going out into the grasslands so eventually it got to the point that we'd run into brutes or bahamets without any warning. Our method of handling them was an NPC HG or Elrum or a warrior with master shield would take aggro on the Bahamet via rescue or going into the room first. Then everyone else would come in and use charge while mounted and disengage. Successful charges could put the bahamet into a sitting state thus lowering the risk of it critting and making it easier to it. Since if you are not the primary target of attack you can disengage and it ends combat for you completely, you can basically reset abilities like charge/sap/backstab which require you to be outside of combat to initiate. Because you can spam it you don't need it to be at master, just Jman.

Yeah but does slipknife backstab auto-poison if it hits? Backstab doesn't auto-poison, period. It's either a myth or something that was changed a long time ago.

Pickpockets get throw to at least advanced. I don't remember if it's a branch or what off, but it's one of the things that were added after the skill lists were posted. But yeah, doesn't matter, because unless you have AI strength throw sucks.
Journeyman sap is reliable enough that you can use it to start combats. You're just not going to be knocking anyone unconscious unless you follow up with some crits in the first few rounds of combat. This is not good for killing players because they can and will immediately flee. If your goal isn't to kill people, though, it's a fun enough little tool to have once your character isn't helpless in combat. If your goal is to kill people, should've rolled assassin, ranger or magicker.
I assume mid-level capped backstab is similar but worse, because you're probably never going to immediately kill someone the same way journeyman sap will occasionally get lucky and combo with some crits to immediately knock someone out.

The lag after sap is so long that it isn't worth using unless you're great at it. Even then it's kind of a liability because the lag is twice as long as that of backstab, and even if you do KO the target, you then have to further lag yourself by finishing him off or whatever. The odds of being walked in on by PCs or soldiers is really high when you have to stand there for 30+ seconds.

Since if you are not the primary target of attack you can disengage and it ends combat for you completely, you can basically reset abilities like charge/sap/backstab which require you to be outside of combat to initiate.nothing resets anymore than if u were the sole attacker. the only diff is that u wont be being the one being attacked, so yes u have room to disengage but u wont be able to sit, rest, flee, or any other useful thing until that same attack lag wears off tldr: backstab/sap/anything lag doesnt wear off when u type disengage unless its a non-command command ie 'look' 'weather' score' 'stat' etc.

I'm not discussing the lag. I'm discussing the ability to use charge / sap / backstab which work best (or only work) to OPEN combat. You cannot backstab someone if you are already engaged in combat. So you have 2 people, 1 is fighting, the 2nd backstabs, waits out the lag, disengages, backstabs again.

Jeshin you're going to make my twinking strategy get nerfed!!!
When you're trying to sap / backstab someone already in combat with someone else, you get a heavy penalty. I would go out and hit a chalton, and then disengage so it would keep trying to hit me while my recruits practiced backstabbing it. Pretty good stuff.

It's okay, you're banned anyway. Remember? And bans are impossible to circumvent, making them excellent choices of disciplinary tools.
