Is it true that Summon once had to use a character's "True Name"? The name associated with the character during char-gen? I thought someone once told me that was how it worked until the game moved away from "True Names" years ago.
Spell still killed me more than once. Jerks.

yes, it requires the character's true name. seeing as how practically everybody gives out their true name, that's not much of an obstacle for whirans to overcome.

Once upon a time, yeah.
Summon stopped requiring the target's coded name long before it was removed. They just never bothered to update the helpfile.

Removing summon might be one of the only things Nyr removed that was a GOOD thing.

Seriously, having had conflict with a whiran before, I don't know if they just couldn't summon me, or didn't, but it was a dumb game mechanic for an RPI. There's zero effort there, the best murders require planning, plotting, and a lot of resources, being able to just cast an instant death spell from wherever is kind of shit. Even Nilazi are better balanced than that, and, they shouldn't be, those motherfuckers should be unhinged void elementalists, as the name of the guild implies. And yes, a Nilazi is a scary thing, but at that time, a whiran was a LOT scarier than a Nilazi, which isn't right. Those should be some SCARY motherfuckers, I mean, they are, but they could be a lot worse.

Buff Nilazi, because being able to cross the known in an eyeblink with a zombie army isn't badass enough, when you hear of a Nilazi, your first response shouldn't be, oh, this will make traval convenient, but, holy FUCK! I could be eaten by ghouls in the middle of mudsex with someone who WASN'T trying to kill me! And this is completely possible, I just don't think the danger is obvious enough.

I had to go through someone's void tunnel thing a few times (travel gate?). Very scary, just having to go through it and knowing that if I stopped too long to read the room descriptions it'd suck me up forever (at least that's what I was told IC). I went to the plane of Nilaz once too, that was totally fucked up, more than the plane of Whira which is just a big jumble of the same 4 or 5 rooms over and over again that connect to each other with false exits (if you go west and north enough times you end up where you started).
Had summon with a whiran, never used it to instakill anyone. I thought about the idea, and concluded it would be a killjoy if I ever did that. More fun to face your foe even if he can't see you, and kill him directly. That's what I used summon for. To bring my foe to me.
Transference was always a risk because I don't get to see what is in the room with the person I'm switching with. Could be another whiran waiting there to kill me. Or a mob that can see invis, a templar, etc.
Summon also wasn't unlimited. You had to be in the same general zone or within a certain distance. Pretty sure if you were in the Tablelands you couldn't summon someone in the Grasslands east of Tuluk for example.

Pretty sure if you were in the Tablelands you couldn't summon someone in the Grasslands east of Tuluk for example. Correct. If you stopped in the travel gate hallway and the portals closed, you would have been completely fucked. While in that hallway, you just started to take damage at something like 40 hps a pop. Even nilazi are fucked in that hallway and take damage. I actually lagged out with my nilazi once WHILE IN THAT DAMN HALLWAY and lag cleared up with barely enough time to recast the spell to open the portal back up and get the fuck back out of it. I was down like 80 hps in the span of a minute or two. Fun side note - spells are half-mana cost for nilazi while in that hallway. Do ya feel lucky punk? Well...do ya? As far as summon - I summoned things from pretty damn far away at the higher power levels. Like grasslands to Eastrook type distance, if I recall correctly.

That Nilaz hallway is a scary as fuck place you don't want to find yourself in... but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, especially when you're being hunted by an entire city-state.
