Better to bleed than to weep, friend Polain. Ideally never let your enemies see either. </3

First: no, I didn't play Polain. A couple of my characters met him though. He didn't suck. He employed people and generated some action for the Byn, hunters and grebbers if not more. He was generous to a fault, even.
He just got fed up with the reality of being a small merchant in Allanak. His warehouse was as secure as a bucket with no bottom (i.e. it was emptied regularly). He tried to hire the Byn to guard, but, seeing as Byn Sergeants have no NPC Troopers to allocate, there was no way to maintain a 24/7 presence.
What broke him though was having the key stolen, and then a Templar demanding 10 large as a token of gratitude for getting it back for him from a Guild contact. He smelled a set up, mentioned it to someone, and soon the irate Templar was on his case. He couldn't see any point in trying to operate as a merchant if all it did was enrich other people.
My Bynner lat saw him setting off in a silt skiff heading east, after helping him load on some remnants of possessions.

thats a lot of details for not being polains player I have a good memory and my Bynner interacted with Polain a fair bit, especially at his end. He hired the Byn to help carry the remnants of his warehouse contents and escort him to Red Storm.

That sort of bogus needs to be called out.

It sounds like he was seen as an easy mark with deep pockets.

I don't recall the Templar's name, if it was ever mentioned. I don't really see it as being bogus though. It's quite in character of Templars to shake down PCs.
The problem, in my view, is that instead of being one small merchant among hundreds, a character might be the ONLY independent merchant PC operating at the warehouse level, and so becomes everyone's target for plots. Negative plots, because what can you really do in the game that makes a positive change? Four Templar PCs, several GHM merchant PCs, a handful of noble PCs, and one indie merchant PC? It's not a ratio conducive to long life or operations. Unless you're a genius at dealing with people, maybe.

10 large isn't a shakedown. Get some perspective for the way the game is written. Templar documentation lists that Templars should be taking bribes of a large, at most. That's the extreme end. 10,000 coins was a nonsensical overstep and I'd have that player named for it.

Maybe you haven't played a while, but templars/aod always ask for stupidly crazy amounts, because the average indie hunter/crafter has like 50k in the bank and another 30k in gear on. 10k sounds positively tame, compared to the ridiculous shit, I've seen templars demand of basically dirt poor nobodies, for the most minor of nothings.

Now you get the merchant guild metagame.
Wait for the Templar or that player's next pc whine about not having enough income. Wait for the rinth pcs to whine about having nothing to do but kill each other. Wait for the torture fetishists playing either Arm or aides or nobles store out of boredom, and whine loudly while doing so.
Remember kids, support your local victim ecology.

Good to see that Armageddon's inflation rate is at a higher percentage than real life markets.
