Is there any coded benefit to being a breed?
I read how their good with mounts, but doesn't everyone get ride?

I believe they start with journeyman ride. At least apprentice. Also I think there is a bonus to taming wild animals (making them mounts). However I'm no expert.

half-elves have the ability to completely max the ride skill which allows them to branch charge/trample and to tame mounts. this is useful if you're NOT a ranger because a warrior with charge is fucking fearsome.

If I understand correctly, racial skills are influenced by a corresponding stat. Breeds ride ability is pretty nifty for a non ranger. Think a magicker who can ride/trample around with both of his hands wielding weapons and not falling off.
I do not know if it does much good for rangers. I guess it might maximize the chance for taming. Who knows, maybe only breeds are capable of taming a roc?

Taming is based off of your ride skill, that's why half elves are so successful.

Half-elves also get a bonus to their Wisdom, though not as grand as city elves.
