Bored, so creating a thread.
I often have this daydream connected to winning the lottery about creating my own, non-for-profit play-for-free RPI mud that'd I'd obviously have to hire on some folk to start up.
Figure, some of you all have probably thought something along this at some point, so I'm sort of curious as to what idea's you've come up with.
Here's mine.
Title: SPQR
Code: Diku-based Argila (SoI code)
Setting: Rome - Middle Republic
Initial Playable Areas: Rome (split into the seven Hills), middle Italy
Backdrop: Game starts at the beginning of the conflict between Marius and Sulla. Aim would be to stick closely to history with some flex for player influence on how history plays out, but not the actual outcomes. The discord between Populaires and Optimates is starting to boil over in Roman politics. The Social War is on the horizon after the assassination of Drusus, and a civil war between the Marians (populists) and Sullans (conservatives) to break out. You can basically look up a Wikipedia page to see a general outline of how plot would unfold.
Races and RPP system: RPP's would be accrued due to roleplay ability, but with less of the stringent requirements seen in other games. 'Races' would be Roman, split into Prole, Pleb, Civilian, Equestrian and Noble tiers, and then players could also select other races such as Nubians, Thracians, Gauls, Germans, and so on at Slave, Freeman, and Wealthy tiers. RPP's are awarded at regular intervals through dated reviews, or for exceptional portrayal of their character. There would be no set time standards of when a player could be awarded an rpp, the idea being to progress and reward players swiftly to allow for the game to be a: active, b: playerbase engaged, and c: higher tier characters in place to push plot. Activity would not be something that would be considered with RPP, but would be with certain roles which require some activity to properly portray. Should a player become less active, they could be transitioned to another similar role with off-screen responsibilities, ect.
Roles & skills: Similar to any other RPI, you would have crafters, soldiers, politicians and clergy roles and sub-roles. Skills would be similar to any found in SoI, Harshlands, or ARM, with crafting such as weaponsmithing, armouring, ect, support skills such as literacy and languages, foraging and hunting, ect, and other sundry such as rogue skills.
Clans: There would be multiple groups that players could find themselves in. New players would come into the game as proles/slaves, with options to join a clan upon commencement. These clans would be Gladiators, a variety of merchant shops with a npc, or pc if occupied, master, a Legion stationed outside Rome in middle Italy, a Senator's villa, a religious Temple, ect. There would be additional clans available to players who've gained RPP and access to a Pleb race, such as the Lictors (similar to police), civil service groups, temple hierarchies, all the way up to the Senate itself.
Some of the things that would be focused on: politics and mercantilism on the Hills, the brewing civil war between Sulla and Marius, confrontation between the Legion and the Italian city states, and law making and power grubbin' in the Senate, with all the dirty business attached.
Anyways, kinda hard to capture all the ideas that could be put into something like that.
Curious, if anyone would play something like this, or has a fantasy idea for a mud they'd share.
