I posted my initial response to Sirra right when that edit went through, it looks like. So I'll double post with an answer to "But right. The problem at Armageddon isn't staff, it's the RP culture of the players, or our behavior on boards, or whatever. Come on man. "
RP culture is a byproduct of the way staff choose to provide content into the game. While players contribute to RP culture they can't fundamentally change it unless staff are in favor of that change. Thus the infamous GDB quote "Be the change" is entirely misleading. However a story based RP culture with activity can keep a game chugging even with the craziest of staff.
Lack of competition means the game isn't taking advantage of its medium. MUDs being a different medium than video games and excelling in different areas. The lack of competitiveness is from RP culture and poor staffing.
Case and point: Haven RPG has batshit insane staff who lie just like Armageddon staff and have WAY more sexually questionable rule changes and scenes... But... Haven RPG also has Daed who is a generally beloved storyteller who puts story above all else and thus the game gets a pass from a lot of people because of Daed's passion in bringing the metaplot to life.
Which led to my final point. "People do not forgive bureaucracy. People will forgive earnest and passionate staffers who can admit a mistake and have the story at heart. When people see the story is above all else, they will forgive a lot." Armageddon could limp by and be successful in spite of its staffing problems if it could fix its other problems. All added up staff issues and game issues it's dying. I wasn't being staff apologist I was outlining why I thought the game was dying while other games can have bad staff but still get along.
EDIT - At no point did I blame this board or any board for the death of Armageddon. Nor did I say the staff issues weren't issues. I didn't once blame the players.

Jeshin, I agree, it's not so much that a staffer did this thing, which, could be handled by a swat on the staffer in question's wrist and saying, stop doing that, or would be, in a perfect world... nor the persistence with which such activities were applied to a veteran player and ex-staffer, and when a completely valid question was raised, they shat on it. Later, a topic opens up pretending to honestly open a dialogue between players and staff, and when it was revealed Aniah's circumstances were by no means unique, not that they'd be more excusable if they WERE unique, but more revealing of a toxic nature of flagrant abuse, taken with the goodbye messages of hardline players, staff were also very flagrantly dismissing of that. Aniah herself said she did not submit a staff complaint, because she really did not want to sound all uppity about sexual equality, but simply submitted a question. This was quickly closed by Nergal and company, saying blah blah blah we can't hear you... and Aniah was like, ok, fine. But when a thread opens and staff is pretending to be accepting complaints because it seems there is an issue to be resolved, they don't want to hear it, and then they want to blame her for bringing it up, they get even more steamed when she posts the log over here. Good move staff, instead of slapping someone's wrist and giving a stern glance, now you've led to an event no one can unsee.
And this all comes back to priorities, like I have said too many times before. I give zero shits about morality, but every shit about results. I hold myself to a standard where I am utterly obsessed with the results of my own actions, and, well, to be truthful, they haven't always, or even usually, been good, but that's where my eyes are focused on. And the whole thing boils down to, Aniah submits a valid question, and it gets dismissed as, she was wearing that skirt (that's available in the commoner's market for dirt cheap) so she was clearly asking for it. Isn't that the most insensitive kind of response? But, she rolls with it. When staff wants an opinion, she mentions a certain thing, and they conveniently sweep it under a rug, call her, and a lot of veterans, a liar, delete the submitted log, then ban her when she posts it here.
It's not so much about the rapey behavior, it's about staff letting this chain of events take place. If they'd said, fine, we'll tell him he did a bad thing then move on, it wouldn't be an issue now, except they didn't.

Grumble's post also brings another thing to mind...
Correcting Behaviour
Nergal claims that Anaiah is playing an atypical character and that if she continues to play atypical characters she will continue to have more animations skewing towards negative. Now Anaiah is a former staffer, longtime veteran, so we can surmise the defense for this is that she should know better and that repeated animations are justified. Okay sure, lets accept that for a moment.
How would a newbie in a skirt who was very similar to Anaiah be treated? Would they get an animation as hostile? Would they get an animation at all? Would they get a request tool note saying hey you're doing this and that is atypical just so you know? How would staff handle it, would they even care?
Back to Anaiah. One would assume that Anaiah was staff so staff trusted her at some point. If her concept of a Zalanthan character is no longer in line with staff why didn't they contact her before an animation? If they have contacted here, can we see those contact logs? Why are animations considered a good way to adjust player behaviour. I mean lets say that Anaiah never sent in her question (not a complaint, correcting myself on this one). Would she just have continued to get hostile animations related to sexuality/whoring/sluthood? Would that have somehow corrected her behaviour by making the game unwelcoming to what she thought was a normal character concept?
It's almost better if the staff had claimed that it was just a gritty world animation to show characters the world isn't as safe as they think it is, but they claimed it was due to an atypical character... So it must have been corrective right?

It's not so much outrage that she was treated in a horribly innacurate way anyone who spent a few minutes reading the quickstart guide would see, it is that it was by a staffer, and Nergal basically said, you were asking for it, and we're going to keep giving it to you. Keep in mind there are reasons she severely dislikes these sorts of arguments, but that is entirely her place to say why. And she let it go.
... except, you can't open an honest dialogue with players about player staff relations and not expect this issue to come up. Sweeping shit under the rug is a temporary solution, use a dustpan, you fucking savage. When the issue is brought up, you don't just drop it and say, your feelings and personal objections do not matter in our locker-room rape simulator, but you should address it as an honest question, was this appropriate? If it wasn't, sit the admin in question in the corner and tell them to think about what they did.
These staffers would find themselves ripped apart and mounted on pikes if they were trying to keep an orderly kindergarten class, and it would turn out like Lord of the Flies. And even in the afterlife, they'd blame the kids for going feral. No, you, YOU, are supposed to be providing them with guidance, and you rolled a critical failure, and were unwilling to police yourselves and hand out a minor punishment, and now everyone knows just what you did, and there is no going back, when this could have been solved way back when by not being such pretentious douchebags. Shall I file you in hell with "catholic priests who make excuses for child molesters"? No, while warranted, that would be a bit extreme, I think we'll give you the Sysphus treatment, you can keep rolling that boulder up the hill, because the grind is fun, yes?

Jesus titty-fucking christ, Jeshin, am I the only one here who can speak Femenist? I know I was raised by one, and I have heard all her stories multiple times. Stop being a fucking pig would be great if anyone really understood it for the simple message it is. There's a very good reason Sanvean said stop pissing western culture in my sandbox, and this is it. I myself have filed multiple questions and complaints against staff and players for continuing to refuse to accept the environment as it was documented, as Aniah was, I was shut down without a second thought, but I still wanted to play.

You lost me Grumble. My post is trying to draw attention to an overlooked issue within Anaiah's issue.
Granted by Noted Liar Nergal
Bardlyone,
We don't make any sort of distinction if a PC is male or female. As staff, our responsibility is to animate the world in response to a PC, and staff's reasoning can cover a great deal of things - from unusual social behavior or choices for a setting, to being in a dangerous location amidst threats, and more. For example, it is known that Allanakis wear tight but non-revealing clothing and the Gaj is a low-class tavern: a crude place with crude people. If your PC acts like they have a bubble around themselves protecting them from criticism, robbery, and so on, staff will seek to pop that bubble immediately. You decided to break away from docs further by having your character commit suicide over something that your average Allanaki would experience quite regularly if they acted and dressed like Tivona.
I am not trying to be mean when I say the above, or the following: you need to understand that this entire game is a collaborative effort that hinges on people playing fairly typical characters for the setting. If you seek to play the exception over and over, you are going to get exceptional treatment, over and over, and it will often skew to the negative. Be more mindful of the lines and find ways to be creative while mostly staying within them. It is definitely doable and many players play compelling character swhile bearing in mind that their characters are truly Zalanthan.
Your Question has been resolved.
This response indicates the animations are meant to draw light to Anaiah's atypical character and evidently encourage her to play more typical characters. So the animations are supposed to be "correcting behaviour" but if that is the intent to pop the bubble and bring Anaiah's playstyle back to "realism" than the entire way they go about it is really not good at changing behaviour at all. For example lets assume Anaiah never sent in the question about what was going on. Would she just keep getting hostile animations with no attempt to communicate why by staff? That's not going to "fix" anyones wayward RP behaviour like they want it too.

Because you asked for it Jeshin (and not cause I'm trying to shit on you, I'm not), these are some of staff's own rules that they broke. It was posted earlier in this thread: armageddonmud.boards.net/post/31892It's kind've a double whammy, because not only did bardly do nothing on the list to warrant a banning beyond bringing up her own mistreatment, but staff themselves are guilty of their same bannable offenses. i.e - Failing to ask for consent before proceeding with sex/torture RP Although, ironically, they're guilty of quite a few others, that only staff seem allowed to do, such as share IC information or multiplay, but that's besides the point. And again, the whole hypocrisy of the situation is that Nergal doesn't even admit that anything was done wrong. Not even with logged evidence. Their response is just to censor and ban the complaining player. It honestly bothers me that there are still people out there that would even support someone like that, by playing their game.

Having met or having been involved in plots with some of her characters, mostly of which I only learned of recently, and even still the memory is quit distant to me, I don't see how she was being somehow "exceptional" compared to the rest of the characters I met, so to me, the animations seem like a targetted attack that really, they could have done one any number of players, except it was repeatedly, to her, in the same form, seemingly usually involving oral sex.

Ah no, I saw those. I thought when people were referring to staff breaking their own rules they were referring to something I saw... GDB... Here?
It was something like... Staff cannot initiate plots/animations just to harm/rob a player? It must have been the GDB, so I thought it was someone referencing like a staff animation ruleset.

Would you be confident with a rabid dog you couldn't put down following you everywhere and demanding oral sex, and accusing you of sex with undesirables? Somehow, I think not. I might could but that's because I'm horribly psychotic.

So here's what I think happened, the poor, hapless elf that Heim slaughtered in the arena, who, with his dying breath, insisted he was having sex with a specific aide, rolled up an a crazy character with the intent to have this very thing happen, I am pretty sure he was not a staffer, his character and I would flirt and muse on things, there did not seem to be this intent, except, this is what really did happen, this elf gave his last breath to say he fucked A Girl's aide, reasons for this are, well, elfs do crazy shit. And instead of ignoring it like any responsible staffer would do, staff goes a few steps further and begins to stalk and hound Bardlyone repeatedly, because she MUST be some kind of whore and MUST have indulged this elf at some point, which, I can assure you, is most unlikely. That character killed herself due to the resulting drama, of which she could not be responsible. Would be nice if the case closed here but...
... the elf, told such a convincing lie, given how elves are skilled liars, that staff believed it, and so continued to unrealistically enforce consequences on her even when she hadn't done anything, and, even if she had, who gives a flying fuck? A realistic world response to an aide who is not a known elf fucker using the roasting pits is to get the fuck out of their way. A realistic approach to an aide that sits at the Gaj bar and blah blahs with commoners is to plot to kill them and take their stuff, she went to the roasting pits because she had kalans to cook, and spotted someone she recognized on the way.

So basically staff believed she actually blew the elf in question (and not some other elf, THIS one) because he said it so it must be true, then hounded her over several characters with the confessed intent of "enforcing the game world"... for things a previous character was accused of doing.

Now, I have played elves, who have shared beds with humans, because elves are coniving, horrible thieves, and that is fun to roleplay, but there is one player who will not engage in such activity with my PCs, ever, on my list, which is a shame because it would have been fun... but it's Aniah. Even my humans would meet them, have a conversation, bring up an interest, get shot down, and go on their way. I have never, EVER encountered this sort of world response, even when my breed gemmer was sharing a bed with a mundane human burglar, though, there were difficulties with that because the militia were trying to recruit her, that was a fun plot btw... never have I seen staff take such an intense interest in a player's sexual preference, shit, I once played an elf who blew a gemmer in the Gaj, a player Templar showed up, and said ... "What exactly, happened?" *swallows thickly, the coughs* "Nothing, Lady Templar, the commonors are spreading inane gossip, as is their custom."

In the end, fuck off, let players handle it. Are you seriously telling me you coouldn't animate Red Robe Hotpants and say, recruit, I have a job for you.
