yeah most of the ones i listed were extended subguilds. basicly u can apply for any of them right now (except for witch ones i think) and the way it works is that ur allowed three special requests a yr (including ext subguild requests) before ur left only choosing reg subguilds until a yr has passed since ur 1st request. the cgp thing basicly adds to what u can choose. karma determines the regular guilds and races u can pick as well as witchy ext.subguilds
it usually takes a few days or more for those requests to get accepted so if u want to play right now choose a normal subguild.
thief and outlaw would be the ones u look for for stealth and gladiator is the closest thing to aggressor, maybe thug because u get some combat skills there too
just read the helpfiles theres nothing abt subguilds i just said that isnt docced somewhere there

I'll take that into consideration (not that I necessarily know my way around well enough to even -become- someone's bitch, heh). I'd maybe rerolling and starting in Liur's proper, but I actually managed to get decent stats this time around, so may as well give it a try. How dangerous are scarab's to me, starting off, and how big a concern are spiders? I've also heard it suggested that one can hit rats, but I can't tell if I'm looking in the wrong places for those, or if my scan is just that bad. Would there be any other safer options for getting my skills up, if it's too significant a risk? Just try and survive long enough to get into the Byn, or something, and let them sherpa you around teaching you stuff. My guide was really only intended for those who were fairly familiar with the base-line Armageddon experience, and wanted to be the 'super ranger' with the big swinging dick that comes into a clan and starts beating on warriors. The biggest objective for NEW players should be joining a sparring clan, and just having fun, learning the ropes. You will die. But eventually, you'll become comfortable enough to really shoot for making that 'super killer' one day. Also. That guide doesn't take into account all the crazy stuff you can do with subguilds these days. If I were you, I'd just try and suck enough dick to get more karma, and then do like a warrior/mage combo. I've seen a warrior/sorc with stoneskin, fury, etc. It's beyond obscene. Oh, and one more thing! There's an active staffer right now, who is a troglodyte of a man. He's either Eurynomos, or Nergal, or perhaps someone else; I am incapable of placing blame where blame is due, because this dysfunctional cretin is violating observable decades of administrative accountability and tradition by simply not identifying himself in his administrative decisions -- as such, his delusional overreactions reflect horrifically not just on him, but the entire staff team. It's Eury. He's a cocksucker. Nyr 2.0 without the 'charisma'. Nergal is just your typical white knight GDB poster turned staff. There's no great malevolence or cunning within him.

If you don't mind burning a spec app, ranger/protector is like, a living god.

Nomad is a damn good subguild though. It's potential is a little wasted on a ranger, but only a little. A subguild like Guard would give you shield use and subdue I think? which is good, but lacks crafting skills to entertain yourself with during slow times. Bounty hunter has a LOT of potential for a ranger, not to be overlooked. If you wanted a subguild close to nomad you could try outlaw, which gives you two crafts, unlocks sneak right out of the box, and lets you make spears and knives (this is a damn fine subguild for a city-stealth class), as well as unlocking climb right off (which, when you NEED it, you never seem to have it and you're like, FUCK, why did I not have CLIMB?!).
Where nomad REALLY shines is on a warrior, for that boosted ride... but if all I cared about were combat with my warrior, bounty hunter would be a better choice. You could go half-elf warrior (be prepared to breed it up, it's not a pleasant experience) and say screw a ride subguild, but you're going to want a subguild that gives you AT LEAST advanced dsense (Hunter? get the fuck out of here with your Jman bullshit).
I'll finish up by saying the offensive combat skills, or even weapon skills, are not all that great. I've played several merchants and it's just a matter of getting your offense/defense up. Considering this is a perma-death game, even getting three or four extra rounds of combat is insanely powerful, which makes Protector my FAVORITE mundane subguild. You know that shit has parry and shield use that cap at master? Get the fuck out of here. On a ranger, with already boosted defenses, and enhanced defense that kicks in once you no longer suck at riding, no hands rids, shield in one hand and weapon in the other, master parry and shield use, master charge and trample, poisoning, master archery, wilderness quit, you are now a roving god of death, and actually stand a chance at running away in the event you aren't.

I should add that most of my priorities when playing games are holdovers from playing Diablo 2 on hardcore mode. Normal mode on nightmare/hell levels was bad enough, on hardcore you REALLY have to consider different things, whereas the glass cannon is viable in normal (you're still going to want to pump your life and damage reduction), in hardcore you really DO NOT want to invest a month of your life building up your character only to lose them to some lag, a glitch, those exploding dolls or a sudden lightning burst from a whisp boss pack. You start thinking about your utility skills which you can use to bait and mez the enemies, and having a good meat shield horde of skeletons and revives is only bad in that it can lag up or glitch out the game, so you won't be insanely popular in groups but relatively safe if you take it slow.
But hardcore wasn't my favorite way to play the game, it was normal mode, with my kill everything magic finding, key running frozen orb firewall sorc, just bouncing around with teleport like mad and freezing and burning everything to death, or a smiter paladin, which, is just like a boss killing chainsaw. That kind of shit's dangerous in hardcore, it can be pretty vexxing in normal. The only real parallel here is perma-death, which is a pretty big issue you have to consider before every decision, even writing a character app. I don't know about you, but one thing I cannot stand is having something in my PC's background that clearly defines when X happens, my PC HAS to do Y, because there's always going to be situations where doing Y fucks my PC over in some way, whether killing their buddies or charging recklessly into a gith horde, when it was completely up to me in the first place to leave some wiggle room for adaptability. It's just like, oh god, facepalm.

Jozhals are good to hunt too, if you can catch them. Find the plants you can break and when they spawn snakes fight those.
Raising one's ride skill and fighting while mounted is a little quicker road to combat efficiency. Always fight mounted until advanced or master and then work on fighting on foot. The combat bonuses given for fighting while mounted with high skill will help a ranger move on to tougher game like scrabs, raptors, beetles and spiders.
Also lurkers down by the silt sea are incredibly easy. Watch out for beetles and don't kill the hawks, they are your protectors from beetles and they will also lay down the smack if you do start a fight with them.

What's the best way to level riding, and is it risky to use when fighting at low skill levels? (I know you can get knocked off your mount and such) No-handed riding comes later, I know (though, is there a good way to tell when you can?) so before that, do you just fight with a single weapon, then?
And how do you determine which mounts are the best? They obviously have various pricing, but there's also a lot of different kinds, and I don't know what I should be looking for in the short/medium/long term.
And thanks a ton for all the advice. I have no idea how you're supposed to learn half this stuff on your own, just given the time it takes to skill up a character.

Riding over rough terrain, while running, and having your hands as full as you can get them. You see that, your mount is slow to respond, or it kicks you off? That's your fail. Bad weather can cause it, too. Generally I try to only get one fail in a skill on any given day. Fail each skill once, then get into character and start doing fun, relaxing shit.

I have no idea how you're supposed to learn half this stuff on your own, just given the time it takes to skill up a character. There's no reason for a non half-giant to ride anything besides a war beetle. Everyone that claims differently is just jerking off. Beetles are superior in every terrain, and can even climb reasonably well. I have regularly walked mine up cliffs and out of every pit in the game. And they take a long time to tire. There's just really no comparison. Riding anything but a war beetle is essentially either an act of desperation (half-giants and inixes), ignorance (newbies) or a sophisticated act of masturbation (that dude who is always riding a gwoshi or some such fuckery). Even ratlons (and at one point, I had three of them, which were the only ones surviving in Salarr custody since the glory days of Expansion Division) were basically bullshit. I took one out once, and never rode it again. So far as I've observed, from owning and riding just about every possible mount in the game, with the exception of ultra-rare stuff like the templar's horse...Mounts have virtually no effect on combat, whether offensively, defensively, or in charge/trample. If they do have an effect, it's very small. Pretty much the only noticeable difference, is stamina and walk speed. Inix go a little bit faster than beetles, but their stamina is shit. Back in the day, when charge was more broken than it is now (you could just spam it over and over), I smuggled an erdlu into some weird places, to kill shit (subdue, throw). I owned meks, ankhegs and Nyr's god-statted desert elf with a human ranger on a beetle or erdlu. There's not much different these days, except they nerfed charge, and trample is like a shittier, more dangerous version of kicking. The essential #1 reason for fighting mounted, is that the sheer act of being mounted makes you immune to a lot of dangerous, special attacks. But then, so does sitting down in combat. I used to fight spiders sitting down with a delf, just so I wouldn't get bashed. Tangential Rant: The thing about the game's documentation that most people don't realize, is that most of it is like 15-20 years old, and the game has been tended by coders who are basically just like that shitty DM friend you had growing up - who was always compelled to make all of his NPCs stronger than the strongest PC. They stealth nerf, tweak and adjust things all the time, purely on the spur of the moment. They have the same kneejerk reaction to everything. Like in the very same week that Nadhir managed to get a couple magic weapons, they changed it so only mages could use magic weapons. Sure, sure...In a time when the game had fifty people prime time, and ten of those were my subordinates, and we were all building up a cache of magic weapons to equip ourselves with, they just happened to decide, after a RL decade, that mundanes couldn't use magic weapons anymore. Another example is when Expansion Division learned how to put skulls on farm mode. Never mind the fact that it took like six of the best, most veteran characters on the game working in perfect coordination to pull it off safely. Something that noone before them had managed for YEARS of RL time, staff nerfed the skull drops and made it a death trap. Because God forbid, that 3 RL years later, a team of like-minded, skilled individuals, has a chance of pulling it off again. They do that shit ALL the time.

Inix is a lot bigger, so can believably charge bigger shit. I swear I've had to switch down to a beetle to grind my charge skill further than like, apprentice or journeyman. Also, inix is a LOT faster, tires a LOT quicker, not as fast as an erdlu, but if you got a fat ass, take the erdlu to the butcher. I've always figured the inix/beetle debate to be largely situational, but for general, all-purpose use, beetle is the best.

A max weight dorf has to dismount a beetle to pack corpses to the beetle, or a mostly full backpack too so take that into consideration.

You might wonder why mount speed is an issue, but when Drov beetles get kicked into run/insta-gank mode, speed makes the difference between life and death. I'm unsure about mounts, I know war beetles can usually get past them provided you run, and I know shit just can't catch an elf, but some mobs have some really insane code.

Also, every time you unstable a mount, its stats get randomly generated. All critters in game have random stats.

Some game advice: Don't post shit about your self on here or even what you know. Staff knew my account and banned me for it, stored my character, banned my forum account. It also may be why I was denied certain applications now that I think about it, the fuckers.
Anywho. If you want to survive as a ranger you don't have to try. Congrats. You win. You picked ranger.
Theres a water cave east of nak. That will be where you get your infinite supplies of water. I recommend Tuluk Ranger for funsies and because you can forage water up there. Bahamets are a problem but who gives a shit go fist fight them like the twink you are.
For twinking heres what you'll do. Dual wield because it's the only good combat style and use *Insert any weapon here*. I recommend piercing, go two rapiers for funsies like I did, because the crits are fucking outrageous. Once you can kill a chalton in about 6 rounds of combat, usually about 2 with crits, move onto consistently fighting vultures as they have better agility but shittier hp. Then you'll be able to fight scrabs reasonably well.
Once you get parry gg. If you pick warrior it's already GG. Also if you pick warrior two hand or sword and shield.
This is my lowkey way of saying Ranger is shit at combat. Unless you are mounted.

While I'm noobing it up here already, a (possibly last, for now) question which I probably can't ask anywhere else: When skill lists on this forum and elsewhere have a "go on" value, what's that mean? Is that when the skill branches? And if not, when do different skills branch?
Thank you all so much for all of your help. Having some idea of how to actually play the mechanical aspects of this game makes it all far more appealing for me. I hope I'll get a chance to put it all to good use!
