Hi there, everyone!
Was wondering if anyone had good advice for skilling up most of a Merchant's crafting skills, perhaps based by location? For instance, the cheapest way to skill up tanning in Red Storm, or the cheapest way to skill up lumberjacking in Allanak, etc.
I've just had a problem when it came to skilling up anything besides tailoring in some locations(cost-effectively), whereas in others there's no problem at all. It's largely because I can't figure out which items can be used to craft for a certain skill. For instance, tanning- I've probably wasted 2-3k sid in the past 6 months on buying random things that appear to be a skin or hide I can tan, but in reality it's an already tanned skin/hide.

Tanning in red storm? Befriend hunters, ruin one a day to minimize material shortages. Lumberjacking in Allanak? Forget it until you're filthy rich. Or join a house.
EDIT: Or spend some time in Morin's...

Hides: view the item, The description always says if it is tanned. In Allanak, you should be able to find a hunter that can sell you loads of chalton (tan strips of hide? Sry can't remember exact description . ) Stonecrafting: stones are everywhere, start grebbing.

Tanning in the south: Chalton hide for a long while, until raptor hide. Only need to fail once, before you can stop for the hour. After raptor hide, things like tembo/etc start coming into play. Tailoring: Red Storm, regardless of where you start. It's just a thing you gotta do, really. The prices there are great, and the chance to make money is great. Armor Repair: Get out of here. Dude, you might as well be...well, I guess repairing gith armor? Is that a thing still? That's gonna be a heartache no matter how you do it. I'm trying to recall at the moment which weapon making skill you gotta branch first, and go from there, but I do remember bludgeoning and chopping being toward the end of branched. So for piercing, you're gonna use southern scorpion tails to make knives. If for any reason you can't make this, kill a scrab. Their shells can be made into knives at really low levels. And chalton bones for jambiyas and such. Raptor teeth to throwing knives. Following that, ivory into hair needles at journeyman, if they haven't completely taken that out(you might not make money, but hey, skill ups). After that, I think comes swords. Or spears. Use scrab shells again, among other things for swords. For spears: Tarantula fangs/mekillot bones for hooked spears/javelins. For axes: Well, honestly you're shit out of luck best I can tell without going up to Tuluk. But I've never much explored here. Maces/etc: See axes. Lets see...that's tailoring, tanning, and some basics to the weapons. Maybe be a bit more specific about something you're curious about, and I'll chime in.

Lumberjacking in Allanak? Hire indys to get logs from the mantis valley. If they survive, pay them a lot.

I didn't really like my post. Just ...iPads and me and fingers..... get me into trouble one day. Can beginner fletchers use long bones for shafts?

Breaking up the bones from chalton seems to work well for making arrow shafts. The southlands have come a long way for fletchers. If there's not enough skill, one can always forage for stones and make sling bullets to skill up on and to profit. It's hard to find someone to make sling bullets, it must be a pain.
