There will definitely be people screaming at you. The psychological manipulation is worst for me. When I was there, I thought I was above that manipulation, but now that it's been a while, I can see that I totally wasn't. They try to frighten you and control your way of thinking about things. This isn't some anti-military sentiment or anything; it's just how it works in training. I was emphatically singing cadences about shooting people in the head without thinking twice about it. My shy self was screaming the Warrior's Creed at the top of my lungs. I lost a lot of my sense of self there. That's why I lacked the perspective to say to myself, "Hey, it's just a couple more weeks of this insignificant nonsense. Who cares what these people think of me?" Because in such a short time, they really had managed to make my whole world revolve around all the tasks and exercises. Drill sergeants lie a lot. They always tell you that if you do not pass the upcoming exercise, you'll get held back. They say this every single time and it's almost never true, if ever, but everyone is forced to believe it because it MIGHT be true. It's understandable. They want everyone to constantly be performing at full potential. I went to "Relaxin' Jackson." I'm sure it's far more brutal at most sites. This isn't to scare you away from enlisting. I have always had psychological issues that were exacerbated in basic. I know that the tactics they use are designed to train effective soldiers and give them the best chance of survival. I just think it's good to know what to expect, because even after reading a lot of descriptions of basic, I still didn't really understand what it would be like. It's not just about screaming and yelling and doing push-ups, although there's a lot of that. It's good to be prepared for the psychological stuff. This is exactly the kind of stuff that I wanted to know. Thank you. If I do go to boot camp and find myself in a similar situation, I'll try and think back to this to put myself into perspective. Kronibas - damn. I looked up accident and killed in action rates before, but not suicide rates. "The rates for the individual services per 100,000 according to the report, were 23 for the Army, 23.1 for the Marine Corps, 14.4 for the Air Force and 13.4 for the Navy." Off the top of my head, I think accidents is around 28 per 100,000 and killed is 23. Apparently most of the accidents are alcohol related, but they don't distinguish in the report. Guide to not dying in the military... don't go USMC, don't drink and operate anything mechanical, and don't be near people when they're being drunk and stupid haha. Grumble - that guy who would buy corpses in the 'rinth always gave me the creeps.

Go to college man... just don't get an English degree or you'll probably become a teacher and then have to sell drugs to make ends meet, and then they kick your door down and you wind up spending way more time than you should in the ruins of a broken life, raging because some nerds behind a veil of anonymity decided to act like internet tough guys and talk shit about you on a forum about a text based roleplaying game... and then you take it too much to heart because they took everything from you and you don't have much else to think about save for your own death, which will be sweet sweet release from the suffering of this mortal coil.
get a degree in medicine or engineering or go to a trade school... don't go to college for what you love or are good at, like art or writing, or the world will take a big flaming shit on you, and everyone will kick you while you're down.

also hunted, i think that probably the suicide rates are inaccurate... it's hard to quantify some suicides by vets... i just don't see them being able to track that kinda thing efficiently. there are probaly way more.
and people say they care about veteran suicides... but most civilians do not give a flying fuck. just look at malken and the arm staff.
When it really comes down to it, people will conveniently ignore shit and throw vets under the bus just as quickly as anyone else. There is so much fucking empty lip service when it comes to vets that i just want to throw up in my mouth.
People really, really, really, really do not give a fuck at all. Some do, but many don't. it's a sad fact most vets learn the hard way.

Unless you deploy overseas and get a CAM and shoot some bad guys, like straight up getting shot at or shooting brown people, most don't care. also grumble, one of my favorite dudes in CO is a 11b... if you were in Denver or CO Springs, he and some other army dudes would probably empathize with you a lot, maybe even hook you up with some weed. I have been impressed with the cannabis and veteran community in CO... it's way more legit for vets than anywhere else in the country. but you pretty much have to live on the front range to be able to readily be around those people.

I think you need to pull up a stool and stop consulting charts, and act like an adult, which is, we don't care who the fuck you are, we're Hell's Angels, and if you fuck with our kind, we're going to chain whip you. Alright Grumble, where is all of this negativity coming from? I suspect grumble is not a fan of gifted kids and may have wrongly inferred you were bragging. I was in gifted myself from elementary school on; there were maybe 3 decent human beings out of the dozens I met. I can say with very little exaggeration that if I was eating at a restaurant and found out the ribs I just finished were long pork from my former classmates instead of pig, I'd order seconds. I'm extremely directionless right now. It's my own Hail Mary pass if I enlist. Thanks for the sharing. I think psychological things would be my biggest concern as well... When I got my first job after taking the GED and leaving Highschool my freshman year, people thought I was a bit ditsy. I have social anxiety issues. I've worked a lot of odd jobs since then and I think I would be okay as long as I didn't stand out to the instructor. Most of the anxiety stuff is from making observations that aren't obvious, not from obvious ones like someone shouting directly. If you want to get over social anxiety, pick a people job where you're dealing with many people but a very short time each. I'd recommend clerking at a convenience store (morning or afternoon shift, not night) or running a stand at an art show / convention / etc. Something where most of the people you're interacting with aren't automatically going to be upset before they even get to you, but where things are naturally cut short so you get a lot of breaks from the socializing. As for being directionless... well... money is fantastic. Try to make some of it, then more of it. Ideally, the thing you're able to make good money at will be something you like doing. Realistically, the best you will likely achieve is being paid well enough to live comfortably while doing what you enjoy as a hobby or part-time. As for dreams, unless your dream is lucrative and achievable, those people are just setting you up for disappointment by telling you to never give up on your dreams as a career.

Goddamn Prince, if I were more stable I'd try to attract your interest, but I know I'd be a fucking disaster so fuck that. Good posts, though. Well, maybe once I have my disability and can apply for section 8 housing supplements, I may pursue that, Kron... considering I think a simple toke of weed before bed would level me out drasticly, I can't think of too many better places to go. I know some people I used to call friends in seatlle, but if they never talk to you anymore, they might not, like you much, something I should consider seriously.

Dude, Hunted, if you can get away with not doing it, don't. I mean, it'll be a life experience that shapes and changes you, especially if you go infantry... but will it be how you want to be shaped? Could you somehow get that kind of understanding without the kind of baggage it might set on your shoulders. We can't all be IsFriday, look at the paranoid banter me and Kronibas have in some threads. Got anyone mentally ill in your family? You likely don't want to explore that kind of stress... trust me, having your mind crumble on you like blue cheese is the fucking pits, man.

A Pale Horse is prior service Air Force I believe.
Markua's player has been doing active duty time in the Navy, or was
Dan has been in the Air Force as a cop forever. Best cop I know.
Musashi was a marine.... Not sure if infantry but I think so.
IsFriday is a Marine still I believe. Probably still a POG. Not hating though I am boot to him because of trouble.
Synthesis deployed at least once in OIF I as a mortar man which is the most intense shit I know of an arm player doing.
A guy I introduced to the game worked his way up to White House Intel with a joint command in the navy... You may have heard about nuclear footballs and things of that nature. Yeah.
Barzalene is prior service coast guard.
I'm sure there are plenty more.
edit: beer

I was third battalion, 23rd marines kilo company, 4th marine division, Forces Reserve, because I wanted to be an officer but didn't want to be a bitch and go straight to OCS. I wanted to EARN it by being a grunt first, like my grandfather, uncle, and great great grandfather.
It was grunt company of about 300 including admin and a weapons platoon. Started marching against the war in 2004 and then talking about it at the unit, got pissed tested and separated in 2005. They deployed in 2007 and I showed up, but they said that due to that nature of my infraction, a drug, I could not deploy with a combat intensive MOS. rules are rules but that will always seem like bullshit to me.
Just getting fucked by the big green weenie
when I had finished all my training after getting out of high school, finishing 7 months in all by May 2004, they had already been through a six month deployment and I think just took me the wrong way because of my ideas and how I took books to drill to read.

For the record I have several MOS's within the Marines.
6541 Aviation Ordnance 0311 Rifleman 0916 Martial Arts Instructor 0918 Swim Instructor
I'm not a freak, baby killer, suicidal, or anything crazy beyond a roleplayer of text games. I've been happily married 9 years and have an awesome 9 month old son. I'm beginning my process toward officer route currently.
