0311, rifleman - USMC infantry reserves, 2003-05.
It's funny how this is such a small board but some of the oldest posters are military veterans.

11-B, rifleman, active-duty army. I was only in about two years before they kicked my ass out... so early 1998 to right before 2000. Basic training: 1/38th Alpha Company. Duty station: Schoffield Barracks, Hawaii, 25th Infantry Division Light, 2/27 Wolfhounds, 1st platoon Alpha Company, 4th squad, then 1st squad (after it became obvious to everyone my first squad leader was an abusive nutjob prick who had no fucking clue how to treat people).

I've been thinking about joining the military.
Question: Do any of you regret joining, or is it the best thing you ever did?
My brother got a 97 on the ASVAB. I'm sure I can get a similar score.
I'm especially interested in going in for two years active, two years active reserve, and four years inactive reserve (if it's still a thing). Basically, I want to go in for the smallest amount of time that I can and then try and get a VA home loan afterwards. I'm in my early 20s with reasonable credit. Fuck rent.
I did have asthma as a kid. I haven't had a breathing treatment in years, and I've never been one that had to have an inhaler on them at all times. When I joined Cross Country in Highschool, I did use an inhaler just because I had one. Hayfever, on the other hand, is definitely something that I still have. I'm likely to have some pretty good coughing fits if I'm around hay and whatnot much. I'm a bit nervous about getting tear gassed, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about standing out for coughing then right?
Anyways, I know I couldn't mention asthma if I joined. My medical records would indicate something past the age of thirteen just because I used an inhaler in Cross Country, so I'd be screwed if they ever had a reason to request my records. Chances are they wouldn't though - I've done my research, and they don't request records unless given cause.
I'm tempted to join the Navy because it'd be the most hypoallergenic, but the Air Force and Army are both possibilities too. I found a sheet of how they rank fitness for the Air Force, and I'd be placed into the 'exceptional' category with my current stats. I'd have to get a lot better at doing pushups to place into the same category in, say, the army.

No, pretty sure you can go past a hundred, or I did, on numerous sections, before enlisting.

Like an IQ of a hundred is a fucking borderline idiot. they do that shit in school so you feel special when you get out and score a 90-something.

No, pretty sure you can go past a hundred, or I did, on numerous sections, before enlisting. Alright I just looked it up. So there are two different numbers/scores people throw out there. One goes up to 150, and the other is percentile based. I'm talking percents and you're using the other is all. My brother got a 97% out of 100% versus a 97 out of 150.

I have plenty of empathy for the mentally ill, I have a lot of empathy for those with Down's... I don't have much empathy for normal trash.

Well, perhaps you should have specified, rather than retroactively justifying your post, whatever, like I give a shit.

Your 130 IQ can kiss my ass, you will never see the life experiences I've had, ever... well, you might, but you'd really have to lose your shit to do it... hmmm...

Well, perhaps you should have specified, rather than retroactively justifying your post, whatever, like I give a shit. When I googled it, it seems that assuming one is talking about the cumulative percentage versus the line scores is the norm. Be touchy if you'd like though. Edit: And I would have specified if I knew there was a distinction to be made. No retroactive justification needed here - basic communication does just fine.
