I haven't played in such a long time, but with tuluk having closed a while ago and having time on my hands I thought I'd at least look into the game again. I decided to read the forums and contact some of the people who play the game and see how things were going. With tuluk gone and the staff having more time on their hands due to having less responsibilities, I figured Allanak would be up to its knees in plots and storylines.
Nope. Out of the six people I knew, only 2 were still clinging on. And they were mostly bored out of their minds, just not having found anything better to do...yet.
Nothing has changed, and nothing is allowed to change.
The politics are still as boring as ever. There is no point in getting involved because whatever nobles there are (and the people I asked had no clue if there were actually any nobles players since they hadn't seen any) can't change anything. Best they can do is sent byn to do some mindless mission.
In other games they are called fed-ex quests, and they are boring as fuck. Go here and kill X, go here and collect B ten times. And this is basically what the plots amount to in any clan apparently. It used to be you joined the clan for plots. Well guess what, nothing fucking changes inside clans either, and the 'plots' are basically fed-ex quests. Clan B is going to luirs/morins/valley, hires byn, staff toss some shit along the way, someone dies or doesn't, rinse and repeat every three weeks to a month, rotating through clans to keep them 'busy'.
The bars are mostly full of people who idle because there is nothing going on worth talking about anymore.
So lets see joining clans or getting involved in politics gets you squat, what about the code? Sure you can still make a powerful character. Look to Sirra's guide to see how fucking long it takes to make a solid ranger in a perma-death game. And once you have that powerful character, read up on lolz's assassin and drunkendwarf's whiran to see what happens to powerful character after you've taken all that fucking time to train them and try to bring some change to the world. Yup, staff practically slays them, or bullshits you into quitting the game.
In the past you had characters who lived a long time and managed changed the world. Right now there are at least three or four characters that have started at a young age, and are now about to hit 50 if not 60 years old. I was surprised some of them were still alive, and the different between these people dying and a 2 hour old newbie character dying is absolutely nothing. They have character that have seen a lot but with all the time they've invested in the game, they have achieved absolutely nothing. In RL you can get a Degree in University in the time it takes to start a company with a clan hall in this fucking game. It should take no fucking time at all but collecting sid, but no you got to spend a lot of time sucking nuts to get something simple done. I was told that in the days following the request to remove half-giants soldiers from the game in order to facilitate more crime and conflict, there were visible groups of half-giant soldiers wandering around the game.
The setting of this game has been built to completely discourage and prevent the players from accomplishing or trying anything in the game, with its untouchable sorcerer kings and black robes running the show. How many times have players in the past have begged for staff to get rid of them so that players could at least feel they could actually bring more change, nope, let staff keep full control of everything. Fine, staff can have full control of everything....so what does staff do with that power? Nothing. Send you to fight some new spider a story teller finally managed suck enough cock to get approved. Otherwise they decide to keep the world boring, unchanging and uninteresting...unless of course change means less work for them (nod tuluk).
That is why its no surprise that they game now averages 10-20 people off peak time, and a total of 30-40~ during peak time. Yeah less than 45 at best, down from 73 a couple months ago. For those people that want to keep this game on life support, I strongly recommend you roll something in allanak, not one of the obscure places with less support the allanak itself, if that is even possible. That is the main selling point of the game and its feel DEAD there. The staff doesn't react to this shit until its too late, look what happened during end days of tuluk, they tried tossing all kinds of support/plots, but they could not bring tuluk back from the dead. Right now this game is mostly filled with what other games call Fountain RP, Its fucking boring and it will keep losing players because there is a million things better to do out there then to play this shit for years.
As for me, I want to enjoy some rich plots and storylines, so the friends who no longer play ARM are inviting me to try a few different games they are playing, a couple of them mushes with some strong coded elements. They aren't muds, but the staff facilitate good story telling, you can get right into the action without having to spend time twinking, not to mention some of them have bigger communities then arm.
Or so I'm told, not sure, but its worth trying. If I find anything good I'll come back and tell you all. Good luck!
