Hello again, friends.

I know I'm getting famous for my rhetoric... this post isn't going to be wholly rhetoric. Just a way for me to claim a voice that's been taken from me.

If you've seen the GDB over the past hours, you know about this thread. The Staff / Player Divide.

I posted in that thread, a few lengths down. I'm the one with the picture of the Shogun at the top and the Buddha quote at the bottom. The divide is real, in my experience, and I said so in however many words it took there.

On account of my posting in that thread, I've been banned from both the forum and the game.

And the conversation continues on the GDB without the administrators there having the common decency to alert the playerbase that I have been removed from both the game and the community for expressing my sincere opinions regarding the flaws of the current administration.

I hear you asking, "Asan... why didn't you put in a staff complaint?" Aside from the totality of my staff complaints being fruitless? The actual avenue of submitting a complaint to the authority is flawed; you are granted one post to make your point, whereby it can be torn apart and destroyed by certain members of the staff who have years experience doing just that. There was never any true dialogue on staff's part to understand or seek to understand my complaint, nor was there to discover the truth of the situation behind what my complaint was about. Instead, they all took Nyr's summary as fact -- a summary that, when posted in the AoD board months back, I immediately called out as false. It was dishonest, and insulting to the players and the game world that the staff have inherited.

Instead of seeking to solve this problem of deceit and lies on Nyr's (and others) part to reject the justified resurrection of three competent players suffered under the fault of incompetent code... Instead of all that, it's easier to just ban me and pretend that this just never happened.

I understand that here, this resolution was To Be Expected™. Adhira stated in her post in that thread,

Do I want players to feel like there is a player/staff divide? No. I really really do not. I don't want you to feel that we aren't listening to you. I don't want you to feel that you aren't valued.

I have never been truly listened to, and I have never been valued as a player in Armageddon. I am so devalued that I can be removed from the community and the game for wanting a standard of fairness in this ancient text-scroller. This, combined with other things I've heard Adhira speak about... I don't know if she's just ignorant to the actions of the rest of her staff team, or if she's also lying to the game community. What she is saying just is not true -- at least, not to me -- not in my experience.

Regardless of the specifics, it's obvious that the current staff team are incapable of opening an honest discussion with an injured party in the process of correcting their own failures. I have no clue how the storytellers just grin and bear it, nor how Adhira and Nathvaan are complacent in allowing Nyr and Co. to silence and ruin the experience of a voice that has proven Nyr was lying without stepping in themselves.

I'm not entirely sure how Nessalin comes into the picture, but it's obvious to me that there needed to be a Bad Guy to step in and punish me for what I've done. I've had admins like that before -- someone needs to be the Bad Guy, and do the unjustified things, so that the rest of the team maintains legitimacy. I only wish that Nyr himself had done it, in order to prove how far his hypocrisy goes -- but his fingerprints are on it nevertheless.

Adhira wrote, "My bet is that if we all met up over a burger and a beer you'd find that there's very little 'divide', plenty to talk about, and lots of common ground."

If only you were actually interested in having a conversation, Adhira. I'd buy the first round.

I saw this thread earlier but didn't have a chance to start a thread for it. Pretty glad you got one running. Here's the initial post, wherein James de Monet does so much staff bootlicking he starts hitting the metatarsals.

There has been a fair bit of concern voiced lately that staff are not communicating with players, and that they refuse to solicit player input or take player impact into account.

I understand the concern. I definitely understand that if a particular change impacted your Armageddon experience, or a cherished character/concept negatively, it could feel punitive or uncaring. But I guess, from my perspective, this unidirectionality is not only somewhat expected, but sensible. As I see it, it serves these purposes:

It limits the amount of input staff have to sift through. This is purely a pragmatic concern. Looking at any of the hot change threads lately, one will see twenty different opinions about how a change should have been applied. Staff probably have twenty more amongst themselves. At some point, they need to filter out possible solutions so they can select one. Removing the pbase from that equation does that in possibly the most effective way.
Staff need to limit their exposure to echo chambers. Threads in which only supporters or detractors of an idea air their opinions give rise to the vocal minority phenomenon that some have complained of directing change. It distorts perspectives about what people really want.
Staff need to remain DMs. They have a desire to keep as much of the intrigue and ugly mechanics as possible out of site behind the dice screen until necessary or appropriate. It helps us, the players, stay immersed in the story.
Staff need room to be human. That means failed experiments and making mistakes. If they tell us everything they are doing when they start it, rather than when it's done and ready, they are going to have a much harder time sweeping things like this under the rug. If you think that shouldn't be important, I would maybe guess that you don't know too many humans or leaders.
Knowing what they know, staff have a perspective on the game that players (aside from legends) don't share. They have more information about what necessitates changes, both existing impetuses, and future requirements.
Finally, they are the sole proprietors of both the code base, and their own time. They know what's possible, what's hard, what's easy, what's prone to cause errors or imbalances elsewhere in the game, etc. Yes, there are some software people in the pbase, myself included. But guessing what should be easy and knowing what is possible or prone to failure two different things.

Despite having said reasons to operate in ways that players have complained about, staff have done a number of things to bridge that divide:

First, and I can't stress how huge this is: they have opened up membership on staff to applicants over and over again. This isn't a matter of clubs or cronyism. Anyone who wants to have ownership of the staff process and the decisions that get made is free to apply.
They have frequently tried to take informally gathered player input to inform changes.
They have when and where possible, attempted to formally solicit player input on certain issues.
They have made concerted and repeated efforts, where not possible to incorporate player input, to work with players generally and individually to smooth over difficulties that arose from changes.
They have assigned dedicated staff to every area, group, etc in the game. If the transitional oversight was not sufficient to resolve conflicts due to change, clan/region staff have always been available and (in my experience) helpful.

And yet, despite reasonable motivation and notable attempts at deconfliction, players continue to rail against staff for changes they dislike. I don't get it. I mean, I understand the impulse. I just don't see the justification, or the benefit. Staff are all players, as they have said. They aren't out to get us. They have as many reasons as anyone else (or more!) to want to see the game rock. Why denigrate their honest attempts to achieve that? We get this game for free. We get all their hard work for free. I'm not even making an argument that we should be grateful for it. That ship appears to have sailed. But keep in mind that simply because something is free does not mean it is cheap. And it is the way of humans to fail to appreciate things that they get for free. I would really love to see more people fight that urge in themselves. And there is a wage that staff hope for in return for their work, despite doing it for no money. That wage is getting to experience your excitement, and getting to hear your appreciation. Granted, neither of these things is compulsory. You don't have to give them. But rest assured, staff do need them. Because if they don't get them, all that overflowing creative energy that made them want to be staff, that made them want to entertain you, will slowly dry up. They will burn out. They will step down. And all those things they were doing will falter or fall to the back burner as they turn their attention to covering each other's absences and fighting their own attrition.

And yeah, I get it, I probably sound like a fanboy, or an establismentarian. But I guess I'm just asking, if not for the sake of being a positive influence, if not for the sake of the staff themselves, then maybe for your fellow players, please, please, play nice? It doesn't thave to be all the time. You don't have to say you love things you hate. But maybe, just maybe, you could approach staff like friends who are doing you a favor instead of like a fascist regime who wants to regulate your ration of fun?

And, because the iron curtain was brought into the discussion, and because I happened to take one the other day, here's a picture of a piece of the Berlin Wall.

(Perhaps not ironically, the inscription around the pool reads, "A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand". Seems apropos here.)

There, I've said my piece. (Albeit one I've probably said before, and one I'm likely to say again, because staff aren't terribly likely to say it for themselves, but it is what it is.)

I'd like to request a karma review.

I understand that my disagreement with Cavaticus and Nyr's handling of Dannet as a character may have tainted me in the eyes of staff. Indeed, the only account note of substance I gained from my Sergeant character was,

Dannet was stored. See request #62331 and #62334 for details. Would not recommend for any future leadership roles without serious changes in behavior. - 6/24/15

Understand that my behavior was sourced by a legitimate apprehension of myself and three other characters suffering in this great game on the account of mistakes made by the staff, or flaws in staff policy. And I still feel that there was a miscarriage of how that situation was handled on staff's side (which is an opinion I'll hold until there is a serious dialogue on the events, instead of biased half-truths).

Since this is the only account note of substance that's been shared with me, I'll address it due to its relation with this request. Throughout whatever OOC turmoils I was struggling with leading to the forced storage of my character, I didn't allow my OOC frustration to impede the responsibilities and legitimacy of my character. I believe I played a competent leader, and helped the game by creating a fun environment for the other players who had chosen to join the clan I was in. My frustration towards staff came from a gathered belief that those who had pulled the trigger on that flawed event (where three characters died nonsensically due to misframing and entrapment on the staff side) were spreading mistruths about the situation, instead of admitting fault. Nevertheless, I attempted to maintain legitimacy in the aftermath, and I did so in my opinion.

I cared about the integrity of the game world, the logic of the game's universe, and the enjoyment of players in my clan on both an in-character and an out-of-character level. And, I'm still willing to disagree with the actions taken by Nyr and Cavaticus on those three pillars. What is leadership, and what makes a good leader in this game? I would hope that those three elements define it, and I've proven by deeds that I was adamant about them all -- even through the frustration of disagreeing with a wall that will only punish you the more you interact with it, instead of changing itself for the better of the players of this game.

As an administrator myself on another role-play medium, I get the notion that the paragraphs I've just written are going to detract from the actual karma review I'm submitting; however, I'm not going to lie or misrepresent myself in the hopes of gaining more "trust" in this game. Trust is gained through honesty, which is what this statement is about. The only thing I would change if possible is the overall tone of my dialogue -- not my decisions as a whole.

I hope that I can be judged on the merits and accomplishments of my performance, and not the abject frustration of dealing with a couple members of the staff team regarding their unrepentant mistake. I don't intend for this to be a spark of new dialogue, or the drag-out of a horse I've beaten to death; it's been made clear to me that nothing will change.

This is only a relevant response in a karma review request regarding a recent account note. However, if you want to talk to me about what I've expressed... I'm here.

I am sorry, but the staff members I have interacted with have been unable to express apology or admission of mistakes. Instead, due to this specific situation, I was: fed multiple conflicting excuses and reasons for why the event happened; threatened with my character due to my dissatisfaction with the result (and eventual punitive measures at a later date, due to the two posts above along with compounding frustration on my part); misled and blamed for the events happening myself; among other things, told it was "not my place" to express my complaint against the staff in question.

I don't mean to accuse all staff members of being incompetent. However, due to my interaction with few, I cast my experience on the many. A house can be judged by its tenants.

It's only natural that you would trust your superior's version of events compared to mine, and have no issue when he is the one who closes his own complaint without addressing the material within. You are busy with your own clan maintenance, and it's not your calling to reach out and try to understand my issue, especially when I've clinged onto it for so long. I should just get over it, right? I mean, I wasn't even one of the three people "affected" by it.

As of today, no staff member has reached out to me in an attempt to discover what my complaint is/was about (furthermore, no attempt was made to have a sincere dialogue with me -- in an environment I felt comfortable -- regarding my complaint); they were content to accept the version of the staff member that led it -- this version, which I expressed was a lie and not an honest account of events, and consequentially was pulled aside and admonished for breaking "trust" along with threats against my character should I try to "sow dissent" again.

In my experience, it is some form of sedition to request accountability alongside a call that staffers admit their mistake and move to correct it. If you continue to disagree with the dishonest excuses given to you, you will be reprimanded. I was punished for clinging to my standards (and experience, as a former role-play medium head administrator, myself) in hope that I could somehow convince these few staff members to set things right for these three players. However, the blame lies solely on us... despite the forced action mandated by these few staff members' actions, combined with the flawed implementation of code that flied in the face of what these few were attempting to do.

If "the history of our experiences together" "fabricate" "[an illusion of a] Player and Staff divide"... does that not serve as evidence there is one? What is being fabricated, and what is real? In the theme of our enlightened dialogue trope so far: can there be a waterfall, without water? I trust by your response you are sincere and willing to sacrifice for the principle of your players' enjoyment; can the same be said of all that are on the staff team? In my experience, no.

I already have submitted repeated formal staff complaints. I would show proof, but it is against the rules of this forum to discuss events that happened less than a year ago today. In this particular case, there's an argument that the events are still relevant and pressing, and to discuss them would be breaking that rule.

I know I'm gonna come off as a massive That Guy for saying this, but didn't you get several warnings and temporary bans for bringing this issue up on the GDB multiple times already on top of what you said through the request tool? What did you think was going to happen this time?

I think it goes without saying the OP of the staff divide thread was full of bullshit and written in the interests of keeping the GDB a happy place full of rainbow shitting unicorns. But hijacking it to post what you've already posted several times to no avail expecting a different result is, as they say, the very definition of insanity. I realize you're only so upset because you invested so much in the game and many people empathize, but at a certain point you are better off agreeing to disagree, otherwise you're just going to give yourself an ulcer.

The thread was about the staff/player divide; a staffer who was instrumental in Asan's player/staff divide spewed out a crock of shit nobody subjected to a behind-the-scenes fucking by the staff would believe; and Asan responded to it with the chain of events that led him to feel the very thing the thread was trying to address.

On the flipside, I definitely agree he should have expected to be banned. I am honestly surprised it took this long to happen. Perhaps it upset the staff to see he wasn't going to keep his head down and hope to be forgiven.

Yeah, I have to say, I'm kind of with mesuinsu. The horse had already been beaten to death and denied a rez, even if wrongfully so. Asan, I do feel for you, I really do, and I do think that staff handled everything surrounding that whole debacle extremely poorly, but there's a point at which you should have realized nothing was going to come of it. You totally suicide bombed on the GDB and I don't really understand why. If it makes you feel better to be on a righteous mission, I guess that's good, but it only seems to make you feel more disenfranchised.

I disagree with the staff policy, the way they handled myself and three other players, and the dedication they have to ignoring a legitimate problem created by their actions. My involvement was burdened by my past experiences, and I no longer enjoyed the game. It came to the point where I no longer wanted to log in, despite how much I admire the MUD itself.

Should I have changed my behavior? Am I supposed to be sympathetic to a few corrupt administrators who lied to their constituents in order to validate their error? Am I supposed to simply accept that as the nature of the game? I've made the decision not to accept that. There's been messages to me about "diminishing returns" involving this... my greatest fear is that what I've expressed will be covered up and ignored, and what happened before will happen again. In order to make repairs, there must be a fault identified; these staffers hold no fault to themselves.

Did I know that I was going to get banned for that? I'm not insane, really! Of course I knew what was going to happen. Is it really a punishment, being banned from something you no longer find enjoyment in? I'm not looking for empathy alone... I'm hoping for action. It's a forlorn hope, truth be told.

In short, to enjoy the game:

1) More or less ignore the GDB.
2) Don't try to communicate with staff.

Trying to resolve/understand situations OOC, instead of just dealing/playing with however things go IC and rolling with it, only makes them angry.

3) Play the game. Come on in, the water's fine. What makes the game what it is is all of the wonderful players that populate it, not staffers or a few vocal folks on the GDB that don't represent the whole player population (which is totally the staff's fault. Nyr locks threads for no other reason than people being too silly and happy for christ's sake - seriously happened. 'Getting too silly...').

i mostly skimmed but it looks like he got banned for repetitively complaining and bringing up that he has personal issues with staff and how they've handled stuff in an inappropriate place (the GDB). nothing looked insulting or slandering, it was him complaining. if there was something that could be classified as uncivil i didn't see it in my admitted skimming.

i think it's dumb and pathetic that he's permabanned from armageddon mud because he voices disagreement with how staff handles his account, even if it was beating a dead horse in an inappropriate context.
