I've actually got a small team together working on an RPI with an original setting. Taking cues from this board on what -not- to do. Will update as progress happens. Coolness. Is there a thread where you've sketched out your incipient MUD?

Gotcha. Would you be willing to do a "high level" sketch of it here? Basic setting and/or genre, main theme(s), that sort of thing?

Just to speak to the law suit part:
It's like a smart lawyer, my mom, told me once... You can get sued for ANYTHING, really, but is another question entirely as to whether or not the sueing amounts to anything.
Do you think someone would waste the time and money to come after you for using Arm code when they can't used time and money appropriately to advertise for the game or other much needed boosters?
Probably not, especially since they are operating in legal grey areas already with the DIKU code... Especially when you consider the "donations" they're probably getting.
By the way, what's up with donations Arm receives these days? Does Nyr just spend all of that cash on his fleshlight collection or what?

I don't think anyone donates to it, no. I do know that the admin pays for the server. It used to be a machine in Saikun's house, and now it's on the cloud somewhere.

Once we get everything ironed out and 100% set in stone, I'll open up a thread about it. I don't think anyone donates to it, no. I do know that the admin pays for the server. I could swear I read something in the "Ask the Staff" forum about donations, and the admin reply being something along the lines of "nah we don't take those anymore".

Good deal. If you find need for a writer of some kind (descriptions, NPCs including histories and personalities, etc.), I'm offering my part-time services. I'd like to contribute to the beginnings of a new community.

Our codeguy is dick hard about creating an engine from scratch, so.... Might be a while. We -were- going to wait on FutureMUD, but that's probably not even a thing anymore.

Wouldn't hold your breath. With a coder starting from scratch, even with my limited understanding of how much work that is (based on second hand accounts, admittedly), and then the world environment, basic room designs, server work, etc, you're looking at many moons, my friend. Many moons.

Your codeguy might be too inexperienced to realize that he's already screwed, or not as invested in actually opening and running a game as you are. Or maybe he's a coding god and it'll be awesome. Tek knows the wonders that can be cooked up by 19 year olds who never sleep.

Kinda curious to see what he'll be able to cook up, but it's just a matter of finding the time to buckle down on it.
