So I'm playing a character right now who needs use of the scan skill. I have honestly never really utilized it before, I always had a character who didn't need it or had a buddy around to watch my back.
Anyway, this character is about a day's worth of playing time old, and hasn't improved his scan skill whatsoever whereas just about all of his others are increasing.
I've been on a bit of a hiatus over the last couple years, and maybe I'm just not used to the novice/apprentice/ etc yet but I could swear it used to go quicker. Any of you know what might be up? Am I just not using it right maybe? I've tried scanning where I know there's hidden (N)PC's and gotten fails on it and all that, but still nothing.

Depends on your scan type, wilderness or city. There are hidden npc's in Tuluk that you'll be able to fail on pretty often. Jozhals and goudra are good wilderness creatures to boost scan on. It's going to take a while, trust me. Scan seems like it gains really slow. Though not as slow as listen

It also depends on the guild. A merchant needs to fail it much more, then an assassin or ranger, even though caps are similarish. Overall, you've got the idea of it. You scan where there are hidden npcs. As far as I know, it's irrelevant if it's city or wilderness, as long as you fail. Though I might be off on that. It's pretty hard to branch scan in Allanak, if you're stuck in the city. You are pretty much stuck to hidden/sneaking pcs. Though do not worry, there is usually always at least 'someone' who is eavesdropping on taverns and crap, so you'll fail. Just keep scan on. If you're in Allanak, but can get out whenever you wish. Visit Red Storm and just walk across the street and bazaar. You've probably passed by 2-3 hidden npcs right there. If you're in the rinth, your scan will go up very fast, regardless of what you're doing. Your def too ... if you dont die . if you're in Undertuluk, you dont need scan, you've got sonar.

Scan improves while failing to see something while scan is active. The creature or person hiding/sneaking needs to have their hide/sneak within a degree of yours where you'd possibly fail (iirc).
There are a few NPCs in Tuluk that, once you know where they are you can get a merchant scan to master in no time.
