So many interesting things put into the game over the years, why have these two skills gone overlooked for so long?

Actually, from when I was playing at least, staff had something like an obsessive fetish about limiting the number of wagons in game. Why it should have been utterly taboo for a private hunting/merc outfit with tens of thousands of sids to spare and something like 20 inix and beetles in our stables, to acquire one lousy wagon, I don't know. But they've always been that way.
Asking staff to make a wagon, even with all the justification, and all the materials, was treated as if you'd asked to bugger a dear family member.
At best, such a request was met with the time-honored system of ignoring it in hopes you'll die, and then only after six months, broaching a tentative no.
I'm guessing the secret reason is because taking twenty minutes out of their goddamn lives to copy and paste an existing wagon and deducting/deleting the materials used for it would make a perilous dent into their rigorous schedule of self-pleasuring, or...and sadly the more likely reason, is because they were fundamentally displeased with anything even remotely cool, that their own characters or alts didn't have.
A big aspect that goes into funneling players towards the clans where imms want them (typically so those leading them can feel more important), is to make life as ridiculously hard for independents as possible. Someone else, I think it was anaiah, had her own story here about her little indie tribal clan using some abandoned tents in the wastes, only to log on and find them destroyed/removed for no given reason. I've had similar encounters.
On some level, it's just pure, misguided spite.

More wagons would be cool. An indy wagon would make a great target for a heist.

More wagons would be cool. An indy wagon would make a great target for a heist. But it'll never happen. And if it has happened, might've happened only once in ten years.

What's funny is they all end up crashed from a fall sooner or later anyway. Entropy and stuff.... and if they don't it's because they don't get used and might as well not exist. Just modify the room description they are in to have a wagon. ..

So many interesting things put into the game over the years, why have these two skills gone overlooked for so long? Wagonmaking was planned out over a decade ago and tentmaking should require someone to invent maybe 4 new items, tops, to use in crafting recipes. But youre never going to get them. Because creating wagons /tents require rooms to be manually created and linked to their unique instance. it's a code limitation. DIKU doesnt support it. And if the staff made these skills usable, it would make more work for them. And you know how they feel about work. Especially when players explicitly ask for work. What's funny is they all end up crashed from a fall sooner or later anyway. because people do that intentionally. i say that as someone who was informed of one wagon crash when it was still upcoming. The staff have managed to foster so much animosity with some players that they deliberatly started passive-aggressivly forcing the staff to change the game. Albeit in limited fashion like wagon crashing. EDIT: Correction. Apparently tentmaking is back in the game since the last time i had a merchant go that route

Tents are totally craftable. The only downside to tents is they break.

It's likely my information on tents is a little dated. It has been an incredibly long time since I had a crafter get to that point, and back then the skill was disabled. they may have fixed the room problem for tents using the same temporary room code as the Burrow spell.

Tents have been craftable for a few years now. They break if they get stuck in a game crash/reset and they can codedly break if a creature rips it up. Other than that they work fine.

Tents are portable save rooms too. Pretty snazzy unless some delf (or some other non-elf pportunist) comes along and jacks your campsite.
